Collaboration Unit on Digital Citizenship- Cyberbullying

Target audience for this lesson is 6th-8th grade students at DaVinci Academy.
Students at DaVinci are diverse in their strong abilities in the Arts. Students are
interested in Technology, Art and Drama. I am collaborating with Gary Martin who is
in charge of teaching Technology to students in the school.
Students at DaVinci are constantly working with technology as it is a requirement to
have their own computer at school. Mr. Martin works with 6 th grade students for two
weeks at the beginning of the year on being a good digital citizen and the dos and
donts with technology. Students today are surrounded by technology in one form
or another, phones, tablets, IPods, and computers. The need for a lesson on
cyberbullying stems from a problem that arose a few years ago between two friends
and what was thought to be an innocent joke. Most students dont believe that it
could happen to them or anyone they know. Students need to understand how
serious cyberbullying is and the damage it can cause. Here is the link where the
module can be found: DVACyberbullying

ISTE Student standard (formerly NETS-S)

5. Digital citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and
practice legal and ethical behavior.
a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration,
learning, and productivity
c. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning
d. Exhibit leadership for digital citizenship

In this lesson we will be focusing on a: Advocate and practice safe, legal, and
responsible use of information and technology.

Introduction
The learners, middle grades students, are primarily females with some males in the
class. Approximately 90% are Caucasian with the remaining 10% are of Hispanic
descent. Students at DVA are at Advanced level classes and rank high among
classmates coming into DVA. DVA students leave middle school with two or more
high school credits when entering high school.

Entry Skills
-experience with technology and technological devices
-interaction within small groups
-creativity in creating projects (web 2.0 tools)

Attitudes toward Content and Academic Motivation

Students are interested in participating in this lesson since it is something that they
are all interested in from day to day. The students may not have had an issue with
this but most of them know someone who has had or will have a problem or had to
deal with some type of cyber bullying. Students are involved in service projects
which spotlight growing issues.

General Learning Preferences

Most of the students are visual and/or kinesthetic learners according to their files.
The students tend to work on their own and most often in small groups. They
research and investigate on their own to find answers when learning instead of
asking questions.

Attitude toward Teachers and School

Students at DVA enjoy coming to school. There is a very small group of them as the
whole school 6th to 8th grade consists of only 252 students. All of the students know
each other very well and are comfortable working together in classes. DaVinci is a
Program of Choice School, therefore all of the students that attend had to apply and
go through an interview process to be selected to attend the school.

Group Characteristics
DaVinci Academy is located in, South Hall County, Gainesville Georgia. Students are
districted to other school throughout the county and parents provide transportation
to and from school. There are no buses to transport the students. At DVA students
provide all of their own school supplies (notebooks, paper, pencils, pens,
highlighters, and any other requests from the teachers) an extra item they are
required to have is their own computer that they bring to school.

The analysis for this issue is a topic analysis. Topic analysis for this lesson allows for
planning and defining what the problem is within the standard. Students will learn
how to become good digital citizens and the importance of the choices they make.

The module begins with a video about the new epidemic the cyber bullying virus.
After the video a discussion will begin by asking students questions about
technology, cyber bullying and digital communication.
Next students working in small groups will read through case studies that are
provided and answer questions based on the case studies. When the class has
completed this activity we will come together for a discussion on the case studies
and their responses. Students will choose one person from each group to answer
for them.
The last activity for students to complete this module is creating a PSA (Public
Service Announcement) to inform other students of cyber bullying. Students can
choose to work on this individually or within a small group. Students can choose
how they will present their information but must choose a web 2.0 of their choice to
present the information. These will be shared with the class and possibly as part of
a museum night displaying what they have learned.
I consulted with the lead teacher who has taught digital citizenship for
approximately 10 years to middle grades students. I collaborated with him to
create a new lesson that could be added into his class instruction. We created it to
be used as a face to face lesson but can also be shared with students as an online
module if they missed the lesson.
