HISTORY OF THE EARLY CHURCH FROM THE BOOK OF

ACTS

Lesson 9 The Second Missionary Journey of Paul (And Silas and Timothy)

(Acts 16-18)
I. The Background and Introduction to this Second Journey
1. Paul and Barnabas had remained for a long time in Antioch
(Acts 14:28)
2. The meeting in Jerusalem over whether or not the Gentiles should become Jews
In order to be saved
(Acts 15)
3. Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement over whether or not to take John Mark with
them on the Second Journey
(Acts 15:36-40)
4. Therefore, Barnabas took John Mark and sailed to Cyprus (Acts 15:39)
5. Paul then took Silas and journeyed through Syria and Cilicia strengthening the
churches
(Acts 15:40, 41)
6. They came to Lystra and Timothy joined them
(Acts 16:1-3)
7. They visited churches and delivered the word of the apostles at Jerusalem (16:4)
8. The churches grew in number daily
(Acts 16:5)
9. In Troas, Paul saw the great vision of the Macedonian man saying, Come over to
Macedonia and help us
(Acts 16:6-10)
II. Lydia and Her Household Became Christians

(Acts 16:11-15)

1. They sailed from Troas and came to Philippi. There, they found a place of prayer
outside the city
(Acts 16:11-13)
2. Some women were meeting by the river. One was named Lydia, a seller of purple dye
for expensive clothing
(Acts 16:14)
3. The Lord opened her heart, and she responded to the message
(Acts 16:14)
4. SHE AND HER HOUSEHOLD WERE BAPTIZED
(Acts 16:15)
5. The preachers stayed at her house
III. The Jailor at Philippi Became a Christian

(Acts 16:16-40)

1. Paul healed a slave girl by Gods power, and her owners seized Paul and Silas
(Acts 16:16-19)
2. They wee beaten and thrown into prison with their feet in the stocks
(Acts 16:20-24)
3. At midnight, Paul and Silas were SINGING AND PRAYING
(Acts 16:25)
4. There was an EARTHQUAKE! The doors were opened! The chains were loose!
(Acts 16:26-29)
5. The jailor was about to kill himself! Paul said, Dont harm yourself! We are here!
6. The jailor said, What must I do to be saved?
(Acts 16:30)
7. Believe in the Lord Jesus.....
(Acts 16:31)
8. They spoke to him about the Lord! He washed their stripes, showing his repentance!
(Acts 16:32, 33)
9. The same hour of the night he and his family were baptized
(Acts 16:33)
10. NOTE: He was called a believer FOLLOWING his obedience to the Lord
(Acts 16:34)
11. The officials were afraid! They had beaten a Roman citizen (Acts 16:35-40)
IV. The Gospel is Preached in Thessalonica and Berea
(Acts 17:1-15)
1. Luke was with them in Troas and Philippi, for he used the word WE ... (16:10 etc.)

When they left Philippi, Luke used the word They .....
(See 16:40 and 17:1)
At Thessalonica, a number accepted Jesus as the resurrected Christ
(Acts 17:1-4)
But the unbelieving Jews began to persecute the Christians
(Acts 17:5-9)
The brothers sent Paul and Silas to Berea
(Acts 17:10)
The people at Berea were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they
searched the Scriptures daily to see if these things were true
(Acts 17:11)
7. Persecutors from Thessalonica came to Berea also, and so Paul left and went to ATHENS
(Acts 17:15) Silas and Timothy remained in Berea
V. Pauls Sermon in Athens at the Areopagus

The city of Athens was full of idolatry


(Acts 17:16)
Paul spoke in the Jewish synagogue, and in the marketplace
(Acts 17:17)
The Stoic and Epicurean philosophers accused him of being a babbler (Acts 17:18)
Paul spoke to them ABOUT THE UNKNOWN GOD, the God that made the world
and everything in it
(Acts 17:22, 23)

WAS RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD

5. Some sneered, but others wanted to hear again. A few believed


VI. Many of the Corinthians Became Christians

(Acts 17:32-34)

(Acts 18:1-11)

1. Paul left Athens and came to Corinth where he met Aquila and Priscilla, husband and
wife
(Acts 18:1, 2)
2. They all had the same trade --- tentmakers
(Acts 18:3)
3. Every SABBATH, he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks
(Acts 18:4)
4. When Silas and Timothy came, Paul devoted himself to preaching
(Acts 18:5)
5. The Jews opposed Pauls preaching, so he left the synagogue and went to the Gentiles
(Acts 18:6)
6. He went next door to the house of Titius Justus
(Acts 18:7)
7. However, Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, and his family, believed in the Lord
8. MANY OF THE CORINTHIANS WHO HEARD HIM BELIEVED AND WERE
BAPTIZED
(Acts 18:8)
9. The Lord spoke to Paul in a vision, encouraging him NOT to be afraid, for the Lord had
many people in the city of Corinth
(Acts 18:9, 10)
10. The Jews made a united attack on Paul and brought him into court, but Gallio, the
Proconsul, dismissed the case
(Acts 18:12-17)
11. Priscilla and Aquila taught Apollos the way of the Lord more accurately at Ephesus
but Paul returned to Antioch
(Acts 18:18-28)
