EFFECT OF APPLICATION OF THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION ON MEDICATION
COMPLIANCE ATTITUDE IN TUBERCULOSIS PATIENT
A Quasy - experiment study at CHC Reo District of Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease with a worldwide dispersion due to its high morbidity and mortality
rates. Patient compliance is needed in the use of anti-tuberculosis drugs. Otherwise, the use of such
drugs may lead to resistance. The purpose of this study research was to analyze effect of the application of
therapeutic communication on to medication compliance attitude in tuberculosis patients at the working
area of community health center Reo, District of Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.
This research was a quasy - experimental study with pre and pst-test control group design. Population in
this study comprised intensive-phase tuberculosis pasients. They were enrolled using purposive samping.
Sixteen respondents were available. Eight respondents served as the treatment group and control group
consisted of the other 8 respondents. Instrument on the independent variables of this research was the
implementation of communication therapeutic strategies in the provision of anti - tuberculosis drugs, while
the instrument in the dependent variable was the attitude of medication compliance. Data were analyzed
using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U Test.
The result of the application of therapeutic communication to attitude of medication compliance among
tuberculosis patients in CHC Reo, District of Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara revealed difference between
pre-test and post-test in the treatment group and the result was significant (p = 0.012). Whereas, in control
group pre-test and post-test results were not significant (p = 0.205). The relationship between treatment
group and control group was significant (p = 0.019), showing the effect of the application of therapeutic
communication on the attitude of medication compliance among tuberculosis patients in CHC Reo, District
of Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.
It can be concluded that therapeutic communication can affect the attitude of medication compliance in
tuberculosis patient. Further studies should elaborate medication attitude of tuberculosis patients.
