Air Handling Unit - An air handling unit, or air handler, is a device used to
condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating, and airconditioning system. An air handling unit is usually a large metal box

and dampers. Air handling unit usually connect to a ductwork ventilation
system that distributes the conditioned air through the building and
returns it to the AHU. Sometimes AHUs discharge (supply) and admit
(return) air directly to and from the space served without ductwork.

commercial facilities.
Air Dryer - Air dryer unit typically associated with air compressors. A
compressed air dryer is a device for removing water vapor from
compressed air. Compressed air dryers are commonly found in a wide
range of industrial and commercial facilities.

Air Curtain - are also known as air doors or fly fans or air screens. An air
curtain is a device used for separating two spaces from each other,
usually at the exterior entrance. The most common configuration for air
curtains is a downward-facing blower fan mounted over an opening,
blowing air across the surface of the opening. Air Curtains can come with,
or without heaters to heat the air. Normally the opening is an entrance to
a building, or opening between two space conditioned at difference
temperatures. Air curtains can serve many purposes. They can be
intended to help keep flying insects out by creating forceful turbulence. It
also helps keep out outside air, reducing infiltration though the opening.
They can also be used to avoid cold drafts by mixing in warm air heated
by the air curtain. The fan must be powerful enough to generate a jet of
air that can reach the floor.

water from flowing backwards into a water supply line resulting in a
contaminated water supply.

Chiller - There are basically two types of chillers, they are water cooled
chiller and air cooled chiller. A chiller is a refrigeration apparatus that
produces cold water or water/glycol mix, to provide comfort cooling for
buildings. A chiller uses the evaporation of a refrigerant to cool the fluid
through a heat exchanger. The fluid through a piping system or circuit to
reach the air handling unit, fan coil unit/unit ventilator, chilled beam and
etc.

Drinking Fountain Water Chiller - Are also known as indoor process

chiller, remote chiller, remote water chiller. A drinking fountain water chiller
is a refrigeration apparatus that produces cold water to provide cool water
for drinking water fountain through a piping system.
Class Room
Electrical Closet - An electrical closet or electrical room is a room or
space in a building dedicated to electrical equipment. The size of the
electrical room is usually proportional to the size of the building. Large
buildings may have a main electrical room and subsidiary electrical
rooms. Electrical equipment may be for power distribution equipment, or
for communications equipment.

Condensing Unit (Outdoor Unit) or condenser unit, these condenser units

are located on the outside of the building. The condenser unit has electric
power supply and copper tubes one for vapor refrigerant entering and
another for liquid refrigerant leaving the unit that lead inside of the
building to air-conditioning split system unit, evaporator unit, refrigeration
unit walking cooler ice maker and etc.
Cooler - Unit used to keep things cool typically used by Food Services for
food products, Walk-in Cooler/Freezer, but could be some laboratory
coolers.

Water, without fans rely on the natural air circulation in a room to
distribute heat, rather than using a fan to direct the flow of hot air. As a

automatically at a walkway and are normally used for entrances and exits.
There are different types of automatic doors. Some types of automatic
doors are activated when a person enter/leave because of sensors
included in the doors, or by hitting a button which results the doors to
open. These types of doors are used in industrial, factory operations.
Emergency Exit Door - in a structure is a special exit for emergencies
such as a fire.

Dust Collector - is a system used to enhance the quality of air released
from industrial and commercial processes by collecting dust and other
impurities from air or gas. Designed to handle high-volume dust loads, a
dust collector system consists of a blower, dust filter, a filter-cleaning
system, and a dust receptacle or dust removal system. It is distinguished
from air cleaners, which use disposable filters to remove dust.

Eddy Current Analysis - for chillers and boilers. Eddy current testing is a
nondestructive accurate method of analyzing the chillers and heat
exchanger tubes. It can be done quickly with minimal downtime. This type
of testing will identify common problems, which cause tube leaks that
result in major repair cost and extended downtime.
Elevator - Vertical transport equipment that moves people or goods
between floors.
Energy Recovery Ventilation - or heat recovery ventilator, pre-conditioning
unit is the energy recovery process of exchanging the energy contained in
normally exhausted building or space air and using it to treat
(precondition) the incoming outdoor ventilation air in HVAC systems.
During the warmer seasons, the system pre-cools and dehumidifies while
humidifying and pre-heating in the cooler seasons. The benefit of using
energy recovery is the ability to meet the ASHRAE ventilation & energy
standards, while improving indoor air quality and reducing total HVAC
equipment capacity.
Fume Exhaust Hood - or Fume Hood, Fume Cabinet, Fume cupboard,
Laboratory Chemical Fume Hood. There are basically two types of fume
hoods, they are: Ductless fume hoods are self-contained unit with fan and
HEPA and/or carbon filters. Ducted fume hoods system includes an
exhaust hood, exhaust fan and ductwork.
Kitchen Exhaust Hood - or Kitchen Hood, Commercial Kitchen Exhaust
Hood. It is part of an HVAC System/Kitchen Equipment. A typical kitchen
ventilation system includes an exhaust hood or canopy, ductwork,
exhaust fan, and (supply make-up air fan if applicable), both fans
exhausting and supplying air within the cooking area.

Exhaust Fan - is a fan which is used to control the interior environment by

Relief Fan - It is part of an HVAC system. On some systems, this relief air
is called exhaust air, but should not be confused with exhaust air that is

piping systems and pump it back to the mechanical room for re-use in the
boiler. Typically, condensate return units will pump back to a boiler feed

demand.

Sump Pump - and or elevator sump pump. A sump pump is a pump used
to remove water that has accumulated in a water collecting sump basin,
commonly found in the basement of buildings and are used where
basement flooding happens regularly and to remedy dampness where the
water table is above the foundation of the building. CSI # 22 14 29

Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) - A water source heat pump is a selfcontained water-cooled packaged heating and cooling unit with a
reversible refrigerant cycle. Its components are typically enclosed in a
common casing, and include a tube-in-tube heat exchanger, a
heating/cooling coil, a compressor, a fan, a reversing valve and controls.
A boiler/water heater is generally used for adding heat to the condensing
water during peak heating periods, if necessary. The system also utilizes
a water cooling tower to reject the heat energy from the condenser water
loop during periods of high cooling demand.
Water source heat pump units can be suspended in the ceiling plenum,
floor mounted behind walls, mechanical room and/or placed directly in the
occupied space as a console unit. There are also rooftop and unit
ventilator type water source heat pumps.
Refrigerator - household or commercial, with evaporator and condenser
coils in same unit, not a split system.
Refrigerant Gas Monitoring System Roof - The weather proofing material is the topmost or outermost layer
(skin) on the roof, exposed to the weather.
