INTRODUCTION
Background of the study

Deep well water systems are known to be handy in every neighborhood because it is one
of the mechanisms, including supply pipes, which let water flow through each household. Each
household has an individual well that serves as their primary source of water which is
accompanied by an electromechanical system.
However, with the increasing cases of water-borne diseases, cleanliness of the water that
people consume must be assured. Without proper sanitary procedures, there could be a rampant
increase in cases of diseases transmitted through water.
These diseases are usually from pathogenic bacteria that are present in the water that
comes from deep wells. Other diseases are from pipes that are poorly maintained and may be
perforated, which can serve as entrances for bacteria that thrive in the soil.
This study aims to determine the efficacy of carbonized rice hull and carbonized saw dust
as filtering medium for water from deep well water systems.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main problem of the study is to determine the most effective among the different
mediums used in the experiment.
Specifically the study aims to:

To discern whether the water from deep well water systems is potable
To determine which among the different filter mediums the most effective

ASSUMPTIONS OF THE STUDY

This study assumed that different pathogenic bacteria are present in deep well water
system due to its location, which is underground; it is very prone to contamination. Presence of
pathogenic bacteria is inevitable.

HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY

There is a significant difference in the hardness and bacterial colony count of the water
samples filtered with the different filter mediums

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be significant in testing the capability of the carbonized rice hull and
carbonized sawdust as a filtering mediums. This will benefit people who utilize water obtained
from deep well systems.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focused on testing the water filtering capability of the carbonized rice hull and
carbonized saw dust. The study will be conducted in different barrios of San Jose City, as well as
in Muoz between the months of November to December.

Definition of Terms

1. Bacterial colony count number of bacteria colonies found in the plates

2. Drinking Water- water consumed by many. Water that satisfies all thirstiness, tiredness
and dehydration.
3. Corrosion it is the property where the water reacts with the metal pipe which causes
different metal to mix with the water.
4. pH is an indicator weather the water is hard or soft. The normal pH for potable water
ranges from 6.5 8.5
5. Turbidity - cloudiness or haziness of a fluid
6. Water - the clear liquid that has no color, taste, or smell, that falls from clouds as rain,
that forms streams, lakes, and seas, and that is used for drinking, washing, etc. Sometimes
seen as polluted caused by some environmental factors and also humans. Badly needed
by many must conserve any or should filter freely.
7. Water well - an excavation or structure created in the ground by digging, driving, boring,
or drilling to access groundwater in underground aquifers. The well water is drawn by a
pump, or using containers, such as buckets, that are raised mechanically or by hand.
