IMPORT PLANET DATA

This section will describe how to import Planet (not Planet EV) data and convert into Geobox
format with TEMS CellPlanner Universal.

General Planet format (equal to TCP 3.x and 4.x map format)
To import the Planet (TCP) format the data must be stored according to the Planet format
specification. The following things are of most importance.
The folders that are selected as source database (Planet) must have the following unique names;
Heights, Clutter, Vector, Text, Buildings and Backdrops. If for example heights 100m or
elevation is used, it will not be possible to import without renaming the folders. Folders with
Geobox map data can have any name.
Different resolutions cannot be mixed, either during import or later on when displaying maps or
performing calculations in TCPU. Files with different resolutions must be divided into separate
folders. The index file must be copied into each folder and all unnecessary information should be
removed (leave only the rows with files with the corresponding resolution). The folders with
different resolution must then be converted one by one.
If there is both vector data (roads, rivers etc) and building vectors is it recommended to import
them into two different vector databases.
TCP 4.x and 3.x text formats is only supported in TEMS CellPlanner Universal 5.1.2 and later
versions.
Information about Geodetic datum, ellipsoid, projection, and projection parameters is needed
when converting databases from Planet format. This information is summarized in TCPU as a
map coordinate system. A map coordinate system must be created if not a pre-defined system
already exist in TCPU (WGS84 / UTM is a pre-defined map coordinate system, see select map
coordinate system window below) NOTE! The projection.txt file within the Planet heights
directory contains only ellipsoid and projection parameters not the needed geodetic datum,
check for the geodetic datum in a text document that has been provided by the map data vendor.
Planet projection file description, the projection file is a text file with up to four lines of
information.
Line 1: Ellipsoid
Line 2: UTM zone number (1-60), or blank if not UTM
Line 3: Projection
Line 4: Projection parameters (not always needed for UTM)
The projection parameters can consist of up to 6 parameters in the following order: Latitude,
Longitude, False easting, False northing, (1st parallel) and (2nd parallel).

Preparations
Create the map coordinate system for your map data.
Rename and rearrange your map data files and folders if needed.

Import
Select File>Map Data>Import/Transformations
Select Source > Open source database and select a Planet data layer

Select map coordinate system for the map data

If a pre-defined geo system, select the coordinate system in the lower part of the window. If
UTM check the Use UTM references system box and select the correct UTM zone, hemisphere,
and geodetic datum. The map can be used for finding the correct zone. Click Ok and the map
data ready for conversion will appear in the Import map data window.

Select Target>New to create a Geobox database to import the Planet map database into.

Data type, map type and co-ordinates are filled in automatically based on information within
the selected source database. Check that they seem okay.
If the source data type is raster, resolution is identical to bin size. The main index size is always
1000 * resolution east/north. Thus main index size field is disabled (grayed).
If source data type is vector or text, the main index size should be selected carefully so that,
within a square with the side, should reside 1000-10000 objects for most cases. Too many or too
few objects will give slower performance when reading data.
Units for resolution east/north and main index size are normally meter, but if coordinate system
is geographic units are degrees.
Select map coordinate system (The opened Planet database as default, transformation of Planet
database to another map reference system is possible if wanted)
Select a target path to the folder where the Geobox database will be created. Click on create
and an empty Geobox database will be created in the selected folder.

Click No (If yes, the converted database will be shown as a map layer in the import window)

Select Target>Update to start the final import.

Check that the source and target coordinate systems are okay. Click on Start and select Ok in the
next window that appears and the program starts to update the Geobox database with the Planet
map data.
The Files filed changes name to Import data when the update starts. The progress bar will show
how much of the data that is updated. Close the window when the import is ready (when stop
button is not clickable). The new Geobox data can now be displayed and used in your planning.

NOTE! If a Planet building database is in vector format. Follow the FAQ for MapInfo building
vector with the only exception: Target > import options > options, a define conversion window
pops up select, iso areas and by sub class value > Ok
