ABB

Benefit from ABBs World of Technology

ABB High-Voltage Switchgear is committed to premier training solutions for the power circuit breaker
industry. A variety of packages are available. These packages range from those conducted at the factory
campus on a specific breaker to those offered at the customers site for a specific job or general training
requirement. We do not depend solely on packaged products but strive to meet each customers specific
needs and often custom design courses that meet those needs.

Factory Training
Power circuit breaker schools at the factory are
offered at various times of the year. Each of
these schools covers a specific circuit breaker or
specific equipment utilized in support of power
circuit breakers. The factory schools are designed with a maximum of hands-on training
utilizing actual circuit breakers, interrupters,
mechanisms, control devices and mentoring by
experienced factory and field service professionals. These factory schools combine talents and
expertise of maintenance professionals from
different organizations creating a unique learning environment during hands-on exercise, group discussion
and classroom question and answer sessions. Factory training allows the individuals to learn from the
experience of others while practicing maintenance routines in a supervised environment. The following
schedule is typically utilized for a factory school.
Day 1

Customer Site Training

ABB Field Service Engineers often travel to customer sites and conduct training on power circuit breakers
and supporting equipment. Training interrupters and mechanisms can be shipped to support the hands-on
learning modules. This training is usually two days and covers the same topics as the factory school minus
the factory based learning (viewing actual production of the components to reinforce the hands-on training) and with somewhat limited hands-on practice. The benefits of this type of training are that the
customer has the opportunity to train up to ten maintenance personnel at the same time, and the costs of
travel and accommodations are minimized.

Customized Training
Each customer has a unique set of training needs and we will customize the training to address these
needs. This design work is done in conjunction with the customer. It usually involves an initial conference call to get the information required to design a training draft and a customer review to refine the
design. In some cases, the course is delivered to a small group of the customers frontline leaders in order to
ensure that the content addresses the organizations needs. The process map below describes the development of this customized training. This process begins with the Voice of the Customer (conference call
to get information) and ends with the training delivered after the customer is comfortable that the product
will meet the needs they have defined.

Major Maintenance Training

One example of how customers are using these ABB knowledge programs is the growing number of
requests for Major Maintenance Training. This training has been designed to coincide with ten year
maintenance routines. An ABB Field Service Engineer will train up to ten crew members during this
major maintenance work. Generally, the exercise starts with classroom training of SF6 gas and byproducts,
breaker theory, and maintenance routines. After the orientation, the crew proceeds to the target breaker
and begins to work step by step through the procedure. Each step is a learning opportunity in which the
ABB Field Service Engineer mentors the crew and teaches by demonstrating techniques and guiding the
crews work. This process allows the crew to gain a detailed understanding of the circuit breaker, maintenance processes, and troubleshooting techniques.

ABB High-Voltage Switchgear can offer training on currently manufactured circuit breakers as well as
vintage ones. The training utilizes design documents and records dating back to the early 1900s.
