Township discusses
Willow Bend Road

Cherokee falls in double overtime, 48-39

Due to tree removal cost, council considers

paving only one section of road this year
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Evesham Township is moving
closer to deciding what part of
Willow Bend Road will be included in the 2015 capital improvement program and just how that
inclusion will affect the trees on
the road.
Last month, the township manager, engineer and head of the department of public works presented township council with a
recommendation for roads to be
included. In addition to suggestions such as Tomlinson Mill
Road, North Elmwood Road and
parts of Evans Road, the costliest
recommendation was that of Willow Bend Road.
The cost, $636,000, stems from
the roads 4,775-foot length and
large number of trees that would
need to be removed during work.
Law requires that curbs, guard
rails, sidewalks and Americans
With Disabilities ramps all be installed or repaired and made safe
when doing road improvements,
and on Willow Bend Road, that
means the potential removal of

trees.
Due to the high price, council
asked for more information regarding the specific trees that
would be removed as to not unnecessarily destroy the character
of the neighborhoods along the
road and to cut down on the cost.
We were talking about Willow
Bend and the need to do some improvement there, particularly in
the area of the sidewalks, at
which point council expressed
concern about losing the character provided along Willow Bend
and what sort of options we can
look at, Township Manager Tom
Czerniecki said.
Since that time, Township Engineer Tim Staszewski said an inspection performed by a landscape architect and horticulturalist has determined that 93 trees
along the road, 33 trees on the
north side and 60 trees on the
south side, are at risk.
Obviously, the areas in which
these trees are planted are not
sufficient for the size of the tree,
Staszewski said.

Tuesday, March 10 marked the final round of the South Jersey Group IV boys basketball tournament at Cherry Hill High School East with the East Cougars against the Cherokee High School
Chiefs. With seven seconds to go, East was able to tie the game, 39-39, leading to double overtime
until East was able to overtake Cherokee and win, 48-39. Pictured is No. 10 Paul Bellamy trying to
take the ball down court.

Joshua Kerr named

Officer of the Month
On Feb. 8,
Kerr conducted a motor vehicle stop and
during
the
stop he was
able develop
information
leading him to
believe
that
the driver and
KERR
passenger
were providing false names. Kerr identified
the subjects and during his stop
he observed contraband consistent with drug packaging materials. During a subsequent search
of the vehicle, he located a loaded
handgun.
Kerrs motor vehicle stop led to
the arrest of two subjects and
more importantly, a handgun off
the street.

The Evesham Township Police

Department Officer of the
Month for February is Patrolman Joshua Kerr.
Kerr has been a member of the
Evesham Police Department for
five months. He is being commended for his actions during an
extremely dangerous situation
and his proactive enforcement
and outstanding police work.
On Feb. 7, Kerr was on routine
patrol when he observed an explosion just over the township border with Mt. Laurel. While investigating the cause of the explosion, he located a motor vehicle
collision where a vehicle had
struck a pole causing wires to fall
to the roadway. Kerr disregarded
his own safety and helped to extricate the driver from the vehicle
as arcing wires started a fire in
the area.

The Marlton Rotary Club held

its annual Pancake Breakfast on
Feb. 22 to help raise funds for Operation Yellow Ribbon of South
Jersey and Evesham Fire-Rescue.
With their help, the event was a
great success despite a late winter
snowstorm.
There was excellent attendance
and everyone enjoyed the pancakes and sausage provided by
Dads Deli in Marlton. During the
breakfast, the Rotary also awarded $100 in gift cards to two students in the Rotarys essay contest.
The winners were Nilay Yadav,
a sixth grader, and Aatish Gupta,
an eighth grader, both from DeMasi Middle School.
Congratulations to both winners.

The Marlton Rotary was proud

to present the proceeds from its
efforts to the OYR and Evesham
Fire-Rescue during its weekly
club meeting on March 3 at
Scaturros Restaurant.
Fire Chief Ted Lowden accepted a check on behalf of the fire
department. Angelo Breaux of
Family Jewelers in Marlton accepted a check representing Operation Yellow Ribbon.
These funds will help support
heroes working in the community and troops both overseas and to
welcome them home from deployment.
The Rotary Club will also use a
portion of the fund for its Dictionary Project for elementary students and scholarships for Cherokee students.

The Marlton Rotary would also

like to thank its many sponsors
for the event for their continued
support for its events.
The

Township asked to help promote

countys local business initiative
Shop Burlington County First encourages support of local economy
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Burlington County Shared
Services Coordinator Dave Wyche
has asked Evesham Township to
help promote Shop Burlington
County First.
Shop Burlington County First
is the countys initiative to encourage residents to strengthen
the local economy through promoting lists of local business
throughout the county that offer
goods and services.
For every $100 that is spent at
the local businesses, $44 to $83 of
it goes back into the community
in the way of supporting your
local sports teams and your other
organizations and other things
like that more than your big box
stores do, Wyche said.

As such, Wyche recently asked

the township to promote Shop
Burlington County First on the
township website, as well as consider the possibility of coordinating future events with Shop
Burlington Countys calendar of
events, which has events from different municipalities and organizations listed to prevent overlap.
Another area Wyche spoke to
the township about was Burlington Bucks, a cash card program
through business associations
and businesses that works like a
credit card that businesses in the
program have agreed to accept.
What you do is present it to
the business, use it the same as
cash.
If you make a purchase for
$25, you give them a $10 card, you
owe them $15, Wyche said. They

contact us, we reimburse them

the full amount of the card. They
lose nothing.
While about 20 businesses in
town already accept Burlington
Bucks, a number Wyche said
needs to grow, Wyche also has
presented the township with
ways it can support that initiative
as well.
We have one municipality,
Medford, they make Burlington
Bucks available at their municipal building through their tax office, Wyche said. The local business association purchases them,
the tax office executes the transaction. Its not township money
or anything. If someone wants to
buy Burlington Bucks, they come
with a check or cash and they

ver the last few weeks, you

may have read on this page
our request to have you send
in the story of your marriage proposal. March 20 is National Proposal Day,
and we are celebrating the under-theradar holiday by telling the stories
of marriage engagements of the members of this community.
Why do we do this? As one of our associate editors would say, we love
love.
And so, too, apparently, do plenty of
other New Jerseyans. A recently-released Census report shows that New
Jersey has the lowest percentage of
people who have married two or more
times. So, when we say I do, we tend
to mean it. Or, at the very least, we

dont intend to say it again if things

dont go right the first time.
Wed rather focus on that first point,
though. New Jersey has long held one
of the lowest, if not the lowest, divorce
rates in the nation, and experts are
never surprised to read this. Why? Because New Jersey residents typically
fall into categories that put them at a
lower likelihood to get a divorce:
We have a high level of education,
so we often delay marriage to a later
age, making us more emotionally and

financially stable. Money troubles are

a leading cause of divorce, and since a
good portion of our newlyweds are in
a better financial position than their
counterparts in the South and West
where divorce rates are higher we
tend to avoid the D-word.
Which circles us back to what were
really talking about here wonderful,
head-over-heels love.
We have already received plenty of
stories from the community about
their memorable engagement stories,
and we thank you for them. Your stories will be told in these pages in the
coming weeks. If you want to share
your stories with the town, please
send them in. We love love, all year
round.

The Sun wants to know: How did you get engaged?

Share your stories with our readers for National Proposal Day on March 20
Maybe he popped the question on a picturesque summer day at the beach, a banner plane proclaiming his love flying overhead. Perhaps she organized your family
and friends into a flash mob, asking for
your hand in marriage at the end of an
elaborate song and dance. Or maybe it was
simple, both curled up on the couch at
home, sharing a pizza and laughing over

the latest episode of a favorite sitcom.

March 20 is National Proposal Day, and
no matter how you went from single to betrothed, The Sun wants to celebrate with
your stories.
Was it the most romantic proposal in
history? A proposal that went hysterically
wrong, but still with an enthusiastic yes
at the end? Maybe the third time was the

charm? Whatever your story, were calling

on you to send it in so we can share it with
everyone.
Send in your perfect (or not-so-perfect)
proposal story, and a photo of you and your
special someone, to our news email, which
is listed to the right.
Watch for your stories in an upcoming
issue of The Sun.

Township looking into program

TOWNSHIP
Continued from page 5
know that theyre there.
The program is similar to
neighboring Voorhees Townships Shop Voorhees program,
which also features a special kind
of cash card that can be purchased and used in businesses in
Voorhees in lieu of other forms of
currency, with the added benefit
that a portion of the purchases
goes toward reducing residents
property tax bills.
Evesham Township Manager
Tom Czerniecki said Evesham is
still doing research to see if a program such as Voorhees has been
successful and could be implemented in Evesham.
A portion of the proceeds
from the transaction is credited
to their municipal property tax
bill, Czerniecki said. What
were trying to determine is how
effective that program has been

for them, what sort of hidden

costs are there to the organization, and were researching that
right now.
However, Wyche said the property tax re-education facet of the
Shop Voorhees program is not
part of Burlington Bucks.
The decision internally has
been that is a direction our elected officials dont want to go because they dont feel that business
should bear the brunt of reducing
the tax burden, and thats what it
amounts to, so we have pretty
much backed off that concept,
Wyche said.
Still, Wyche said the Shop
Burlington County program and
Burlington Bucks make residents
walk in the door and support the
local businesses.
Its free for residents, its free
for businesses, and it supports the
local business association, he
said.
As of March 11, a post on the
township Facebook page had a
link to the Shop Burlington County website.

Mayor Brown wants input from residents

MAYOR
Continued from page 1
Staszewski also knocked down
the possibility of doing the necessary sidewalk work, removing
roots, but keeping trees themselves in place.
If we keep trees and we maintain these standards, were essentially cutting roots of these trees
and essentially impacting up the
side of the tree, and of course I
dont think any tree would essentially remain in good standing
after that work is done,
Staszewski said.
Another factor is a $200,000
Safe Routes to Schools grant
that Director of Community Development Nancy Jamanow believes the township could acquire
because of the roads connection
to St. Joan of Arc School and Jaggard Elementary.
As such, it was her suggestion
that for now, the work to be done
on Willow Bend should extend
from Wescott down toward Cherokee High School and Tomlinson
Mill Road, and not from Wescott
toward St Joan of Arc, which is
where the trees are the worst.
The worst area in which the
trees are impacted is actually
from Westcott Road toward St.
Joans, and I did go out there and
look at that before I said that, and
its true, the bulk of the trees are
in that area, and part of that is because of the work that was done
because of Hurricane Sandy, she

said.
That was an idea Mayor Randy
Brown is receptive to, and he said
it would give everyone more time
to decide what to do with the majority of the trees as well get input
from those who live in the area.
Repave Willow Bend down to
Tomlinson Mill in front of Chero-

kee, make the right on Tomlinson

Mill, and well repave from there
down to the bypass, with a low
impact of any trees, and then
next year apply for the $200,000
but also give us a lot more time to
really make the decision of what
we want to do with the trees,
Brown said.
