COURSE DESCRIPTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After the successful completion of the course, the participant
should demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the
duties of a navigational watch officer defined by STCW Code.
This knowledge, skill and understanding should be in accordance
with IMO Model Course 1.27, but is not limited to:
Knowledge of the capability and limitations of ECDIS operations,
and all indicated sub-topics
Proficiency in operation, interpretation, and analysis of information obtained from ECDIS, and all indicated sub-topics
Management of operational procedures, system files and data,
and all indicated sub-topics

TARGET GROUP
Navigational watch officers, experienced nautical officers
and other persons with responsible duties in navigational
work.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
It is assumed that trainees participating in this course
have accomplished some formal instruction in Terrestrial
Navigation, have at minimum some familiarization with
visual navigation, have accomplished a period of supervised bridge watch-keeping duties, and have prior completion of basic Radar/ARPA (MC 1 .07). Trainees should also
have considerable familiarization with personal computing
operating systems.
CONTENTS
The course is developed in accordance with IMO Model
Course 1.27 The Operational Use of ECDIS.
Legal aspects and requirements
Main types of electronic charts
ECDIS data
Presentation of data
Sensors
Basic navigational functions
Special functions for route planning
Special functions for route monitoring
Updating of charts and routes
Additional navigational functions and indications
Errors in displayed data
Errors of interpretation
Status information, warnings and alarms
Voyage documentation
System integrity monitoring
ECDIS back-up
Dangers of over-reliance on ECDIS

LEARNING PROCESS
The course is divided into modules and consists of totally
17 theoretical lessons (as specified in Contents of course)
plus practical simulator exercises, hands-on training and
operator assessment. A training manual is developed for
this course, covering the above subjects. This includes discussions on accidents related to wrong use/lack of proper
training on ECDIS.
