Evinrude/Johnson Dealers:
This communication is to inform dealers about improved water pump impellers.

Improved water pump impellers are now available in Water Pump Repair kit, P/N 5008972 and
Water Pump Impeller Kit, P/N 5008968. Use
these kits for the models listed in the table below.

INSPECTION
If the outboard exhibits a reduction of water flow,
or overheat condition, inspect the following:
Impeller for hub separation, torn blades, or
signs of melting.
Cup and plate for scoring, distortion, and
impeller material transfer.
Pump housing for cracks or melting.
Pressure relief valve and thermostat for
melting.
External powerhead components for overheat damage.
Determine if the engine has overheated. Use
Evinrude Diagnostics software to check for the
following:
Code 31; Engine temperature over range
Code 40; Engine temperature above range
Low speed
Code 43; Engine temperature above range
Recorded maximum engine temperature
If any of these service codes are stored, and the
maximum engine temperature is over 248F there
may be engine or exhaust megaphone damage.

Loss of performance will result from a damaged

exhaust housing megaphone. The megaphone
can be damaged when an extended loss of water
flow occurs.

Install Water Pump Repair kit, P/N 5008972 or
Water Pump Impeller Kit, P/N 5008968.

IMPORTANT: Replace the pressure relief valve

and thermostat springs as required when installing
a water pump impeller kit, or a complete water
pump kit. Follow the individual kit instructions carefully.
A change to the water pump impeller material improves the performance of the water pump. This
change affects engine water pressure and may
require stronger pressure relief valve and thermostat springs.

NOTICE Failure to install the impeller

assembly and springs as a set can result in:

A cold running engine, if the impeller is

installed without the pressure relief valve
and thermostat springs.
An engine overheat, if the pressure relief
valve and thermostat springs are installed
without the new impeller.
Chrome water pump cup, P/N 328773 and
chrome water pump plate, P/N 328772 are available as individual service components. Use the
chrome cup and plate for extreme operating conditions.
Complete a compression test. Compression values should not differ more than 10% between cylinders.
Re-torque the cylinder head bolts. Refer to the
correct Service Manual for torque specifications.
Note: Engine damage due to overheat conditions
caused by obstructed water flow is NOT covered
by the BRP Limited Warranty.
