STORM WATER DRAINAGE DESIGN PARAMETERS

Design Parameters adopted

The main objective of hydrological analysis is to estimate the maximum
quantity of water expected to reach the element of the drainage system under
consideration. This maximum quantity of water is dependent on intensity and
duration of precipitation characteristics of that area. Catchment area is
obtained by multiplying center to center distance between DFC track and IR
track and length of drainage stretch.
For the estimation of flood discharge, Central Water Commission

(CWC)Proposed project area falls under Upper Indo-Ganga Plains Subzone 1(e)
and Middle Ganga Plains Subzone 1(f) but major portion of DFCC track falls
under CWC report Subzone 1(e) so 50 year 24 hour point rainfall (mm) value
is taken from 1(e). Catchment area for track drainage is less than 25 sq. km,
the method given in the report No. RBF-16 published by RDSO is used, and
critical intensity of rainfall is derived following the method described in RBF16.
Improved Rational Formula for Runoff Calculation for Storm drainage design
Q50 = 0.278 C I50 A
Where,
Q50 - 50-year return peak flood (m3/sec)
A - Catchment area of drainage channel in sq.km.
C - Coeficient of run off for the type of catchment.
I50 - Intensity of rainfall in mm/hour for tc duration, where, tc = time of
concentration.
Time of concentration, tc = [L3/H] 0.345 hour; where
L = Length of longest stream here drainage channel (kM)
H = Level diff between the starting point of drain and outfall location (M)
Coefficient of runoff, C = 0.332 (R. F)0.2 for alluvium / silty loam; where
R = 50 year 24 hour point rainfall isopluvial map of relevant CWC report.
F = Areal reduction factor, as per table 6.2 of RDSO Monograph No. 50,

For design of the drain section, velocity is calculated from Mannings formula
which is expressed as:

V =

I
x R 2 / 3 xS 1 / 2
n

When, V = Velocity in meter per second

S = Slope of hydraulic gradient
R = Hydraulic Radius in meter =

A
in meter
P

A = Area of Drain Section in square meter

P = Wetted Perimeter of Drain Section in meter
n = Mannings Coefficient of roughness

Mannings formula for circular conduit is expressed below

V = (1/n) x (3.968 x 10-3) x D2/3 x S1/2
Q = (1/n) x (3.118 x 10-6) x D8/3 x S1/2
When, V = Velocity in meter per second
S = Slope of hydraulic gradient
D = internal dia of pipe line in mm
R = Hydraulic Radius in meter = (D/4 ) x 10-3 in meter
n = Mannings Coefficient of roughness
Q = Discharge in lps
For design purpose, the value of S is taken from Alignment drawing. To
minimize the volume of earth cutting and filling, slope of hydraulic gradient has
been maintained more or less same to that of ground profile. The value of n
has been considered as 0.025 for unlined trapezoidal drain, and 0.015 for
PCC lined drain, 0.011 for PVC/HDPE pipe, 0.013 for RCC NP4 pipe(Ref.
Manual on Sewerage and sewage Treatment; Central Public Health And
Environmental engineering organization CPHEEO).

Half channel type drain is designed based Mannings formula for circular
conduit, here liquid depth is considered less than radious of circular pipe.

When the formation is in cutting or where bottom of blanket is below the

existing ground level, RCC lined trapezoidal side drain is proposed to drain
out water from DFC UP track formation.
Outfall for Drains
Proposed DFC track is crossing some existing canals, rivers and some
balancing structure like culverts. These cross drainage works shall be used for
drainage outfall purpose. Wherever it is not possible to discharge the storm
runoff to natural drainage courses, same will be discharged to natural ground
after crossing DFC track. In such case, effort will be made to ensure that drain
invert level at outfall position matches with the natural ground level.

For flow computation and design calculation for different sections as

typical case refer annexure 1A to 6A(for flow computation) and 1B to
6B(for design calculation).
