UNIVERSIDAD AUTNOMA DEL ESTADO DE HIDALGO

INSTITUTO DE CIENCIAS SOCIALES Y HUMANIDADES

LIC. EN ENSEANZA DE LA LENGUA INGLESA

Group Profile
This English class takes place at Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo at the institute
ICSHu at LELI from 7:00 am to 9:00 am on Thursday, in which teachers approximately cover 50
minutes.
There is a total of ten students in this class, three of them are men and seven are women. The
range of the age is around twenty to twenty two years old. Students are at an A2 and B1 level.
Most students are really motivated to learn English, but that motivation is sometimes lost;
therefore the teacher has to provide dynamic classes and a wide variety of activities where they
can practice the language in order to produce it in a successful way.

Students prior knowledge: Students know how to use indefinite pronouns (e.g. someone,
anyone and no one) using past simple events. Clearly somebody/someone murdered
him. It was not suicide. Did anybody/ anyone see the suspect? Nobody/ No one was
there because the house smelt damp

Now we have the latest news! Several have been arrested in the deaths of three California trick-or-treaters
Twin sisters, Lexandra and Lexi Perez, 13, were killed on Halloween night while trick-or-treating in Santa
Ana, Calif. Someone else was killed on that damp and muddy night, too. At first nobody knew who she was.
But later, the person who was killed after being hit in a Santa Ana crosswalk was identified as 13 year old
Andrea Gonzales.
California police have nabbed multiple suspects in the hit-and-run based on evidence in a handbag they
found in a marsh near Andrea Gonzales body. The suspects were handcuffed and fingerprinted. One of
them reported that he had been found guilty of a petty crime three months ago. Another suspect was
released when he gave a reasonable alibi.
Anyone with information is asked to call Orange County Crime at 7763429760.

Grammar Problems and Solutions

Level:
Function:

B1

Context: Police News

Narrative Stories

Form:
Clearly somebody/someone murdered him. It was not suicide.
-

Where was the crime? Nobody/ No one knew where it was .

Did anybody/ anyone see the suspect?
I didnt see anybody
Nobody/ No one had an alibi
Somebody called and told me about some fingerprints
Did somebody know about this handbag?
Nobody/ No one was there because the house smelt damp
Was not anybody/ anyone in the lobby?

Problems

Contrast with L1

Solutions
-

Teacher will use sentences when

-Use of (s) when they refer plural.

someones / somebodys = algunos
- Use of a singular past verb after an
indefinite pronoun

-no one/nobody = nadie and anyone/anybody

use of s is incorrect to indicate plural.

Ex: Did someones see that?
-Explanation and examples where T shows and
provides examples
Someone killed Sally.
Nobody saw the suspect

= nadie -in negative and anyone/anybody = alguien- in questions-

- Clarification and explanation to Ss that it is

correct use of both.

-use Did in questions and the verb in base

- Explanation and examples, T shows why Did &

verb is used in that way

-someone/ somebody = alguien- in positive-

form
-use Was in question = estaba alguien?

Did anybody/ anyone see the suspect?

- Explanation and examples to Ss. T explain why Was

at the begging of the question has this meaning

Was not anybody/ anyone in the lobby?

Exceptions/Complications:
- Students must remember negative verb + anybody / anyone and positive verb + nobody / noone
Solution: Explain and show examples
There wasnt anybody/ anyone in the room
There was nobody/ no-one in the room
- Use of Anyone = Anybody, No-one = Nobody, Someone = Somebody
Solution: Teacher explains to Ss could use these items in the same form and meaning
-Students could use someone/somebody in questions but only when a request is a particular
answer . E.g. Did somebody know about this handbag?
Solution: Teacher show some questions with someone/ somebody where the answer is expected
yes

T shows to Ss a crime image and give some personal information about the .
First, Ss find the possible evidence that help them to resolve how the person was killed.
Then, T gives to Ss three witness of different people who saw the crime.
After that, Ss share ideas and discuss their possible guesses (Ss can share ideas with other
teams and take notes they hear). 3 min
Next, teams present their answer (T writes their answers on the board)
T helps to find give some clues about the crime.
Ss give the final result
