Question 2

For each of the question below, give your answers to two decimal places.
People visiting video rental stores often rent more than one DVD at a time. The probability
distribution for DVD rentals per customer at Video To Go Sdn Bhd is given in TABLE 1

Question 3

Suppose we know that the length of time it takes a university student to find a parking spot in
the multi-storey car park follows a normal distribution with a mean of 2.5 minutes and a
standard deviation of 1.0 minute.

(a)

Write down the distribution representing the situation.

(1 mark)

(b)

Obtain the probability, to four decimal places, that a randomly selected student will
take between 1.0 and 3.5 minutes to find a parking spot in the multi-storey car park.
(5 marks)

(c)

What percentage of students will take more than 4.0 minutes to find a parking spot ?
(5 marks)

(d)

Determine the value of x such that P ( X > x ) = 0.80, where x represents the time
taken which exceed 80% of students successfully found a parking spot in the car
park.

Question 5

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not only a tourist attraction, but an architectural wonder.
Engineers concerned about the towers stability have done extensive studies of its
increasing tilt. TABLE 4 below shows the lean measurements from year 1975 to 1987.
