Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale

announced on Feb. 27 that he intends
to step back from politics and take
some time to focus on his family and
their business.
Hale recently is best known for
crossing the floor from the Wildrose
Party to join the Progressive Conservatives. Hale said he has zero regrets
about the decision.
I support the Premier 100 per cent
in his vision, said Hale.
With an election on the horizon
Hale gave his opinion about the possible call for an early election.
The Premier stated that with the
type of budget that the government
is putting forward here in March, he
will need a mandate from the people
of Alberta to implement it, said Hale.
Thats basically why theyre calling
it now instead of waiting until next
year, with the financial situation were
in and price of oil and the reliance
that we have on oil and gas royalty
revenue that needs to be dealt with.
He continued on to say that in the
budget there will be changes, and that
the people need to be able to voice
their opinion through the election,
about whether they want the government to go ahead and implement
what will be proposed in the budget.
I think Jasons decision was probably quite a difficult one, and when
youre involved in public service it
often means that family life and business life or the business you were in
can suffer so I certainly understand
the push and the pull, said PC candidate Molly Douglass.
I appreciated what he has contributed to our Strathmore-Brooks constituency and I wish him and his family all the best into the days ahead.
Derek Fildebrandt has filled Hales
vacated seat in the Wildrose Party by
acclamation and Douglass has already
named her intentions to become the
new MLA. As for whether or not Hale
will ever return to politics, Right now
my focus is just on our agricultural
operation and one never knows what
the future holds, said Hale.

Friends of East Wheatland moving forward

MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

The East Wheatland School project
has been moving forward one small
step at a time and February brought
them one step closer with a cheque
donation from Encana for $50,000 on
Feb. 26.
Darci-Jane McAuley (Manager, Community Relations for Encana) along
with Luigi Vescarelli (Senior Community Relations Advisor for Encana)
were pleased to present the cheque to
students representing kindergarten to
Grade 12 from all the communities that
are involved in the new school coming
into existence.
Vescarelli said, Encana is in the process of drilling 200 wells in the Wheatland area. Encana is thrilled to be a
part of the sustainability that takes in
a number of the communities and that
the sites for Encana are a strategic investment for them as they are operating in the heart of the East Wheatland
area.
All the work by the volunteers of
the communities is why we became involved, said McAuley. It is an exciting
project that is looking into the futures
of the kids this is all about the kids.
Golden Hills School Division Superintendent Bevan Daverne spoke on be-

half of the school division.

We are very appreciative of the donation from community dollars and the
enhancement dollars that are a great
asset to this project, said Daverne.
He was happy to announce that the
tender for the construction bids was
chosen and that Delnor Construction
would be heading up the project with
hopes that the students will be standing in the new facility by fall of 2016.

Vescarelli told those gathered that the

drilling of the wells has a low impact
on the environment and communities
as they set up for one day, drill for one
day and take one day to dismantle. The
longevity of the low flow gas wells
is determined to be ten-plus years or
more.
Delnor Construction is expected
within the month to be on site and start
the much-awaited project.

North Strathmore not covered in 10 minute fire response

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A recent study by Behr Energy Services provided town council with a 10-minute fire response area map for the town.
The report outlines what areas of the
Town the Strathmore Fire Department
can responded within 10 minutes of
the call going out. While most of the
town does fall into the coverage area,
much of the land in the northwest part
of town including Lakewood Meadows,
Hill View and any future development,
do not.
It covers a majority of the town including the west part ... the one area that
is doesnt cover is Lakewood Meadows,
its not covered at all there and then Hill
View is not covered, said Stanford.
Lakewood Meadows, the only way
that can be covered is if there is a small
fire hall in the north part of town.
If there was a hall built it would cover
Hill View, Lakewood Meadows and all
future development in the north part of
town.
Stanford had contacted a local builder

Nightly:
8pm

to get rough estimates on the cost of a

new fire hall if it were a 30 ft. by 40 ft.
steel building.
It would work out to approximately
$90 per square foot. There would also
be the cost of leveling the land, and taking water and sewer across the road and
the building.
With that in mind, Stanford said if
council doesnt agree and a small fire
hall is not built up there, then the developer of Lakewood Meadows would have
to follow the building code for the further response time, which would mean
putting sprinklers in all the houses and/
or using special fire retardant drywall
and so on.
Stanford also brought up the possibility that the developers building in the
north end of town may be able to help
offset some of the costs of a new hall.
I think time is of the essence here
for this particular developer because
his lots are already set and he cant really change much, said Councillor Steve
Grajczyk.
So I was wondering if wed just maybe direct administration to just get us a

more detailed report on it as quick as

possible so that we can make an accurate decision on just how quickly we can
move on this project.
Council agreed with the suggestion, making it a motion. The plan and
10-minute response area maps provided
by Behr Energy Services were adopted.

Q: What are the different types of

funeral service?

A: There are three basic types of funeral service:

traditional, memorial, and immediate disposition.

Traditional services usually include embalming,
viewing if the family wishes, body and casket
present at the funeral service, stationary,
vehicles, funeral staff, and equipment.
Memorial services assume the body and casket
are not present although an urn may be. The
funeral service itself is conducted similarly to
that of the traditional service.
Immediate disposition usually has no funeral
service. The deceased is either buried or
cremated as soon as possible following the death.
Although these are the three basic types of
services, individual needs and requests can
usually be incorporated into the service to make
it a truly personal experience.

SRAC requests art policy

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC) is hoping to see a new art
policy created by the Town of Strathmore. The policy will allow for the installation of art on both indoor and outdoor town-owned property.
We know that (art policies) exist
in other communities and wed like to
have the opportunity to do the same,
said Councillor Denise Peterson of the
request.
We think that it would be a great
addition to the community in terms of
elevating the downtown revitalization
project and adding interest as well as
providing opportunity for artists to display their work and perhaps even sell
their work.
Peterson moved that the request be
looked into and information be brought
back to council from administration
Councillor Steve Grajczyk questioned
whether it only has to be town owned,
stating that in Canmore it is done on
both town and private properties.
You dont dictate it, you just encourage it said Grajczyk, when a question
arose about how it could be dictated to
the residents.
The motion was passed and a policy
will be brought back to council at a
later date.
EARTH HOUR CHALLENGE
Each year people across the globe

are asked to participate in Earth Hour,

which is when people are encouraged
to shut off all unnecessary lights and
electronics for one hour to conserve
energy. The Earth Hour Challenge is
March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
The Town of Strathmore will once again
be taking part and asks that all residents in the community do so as well.
There is also a chance to win money
for the community if Strathmore is one
of the three top energy conservers for
that hour.
FORMER MAYOR HONOURED
Former High River Mayor Emile Blokland was praised in council during the
Feb. 18 meeting. Councillor Rocky
Blokland was granted permission to
read a letter aloud about Emile being
selected as a recipient of a Peace Tower
Flag.
It is given to people or groups who
have contributed significantly to the
wellbeing of citizens as part of the national flags 50th anniversary celebration, read Rocky.
During the 2013 flood Emile was
both praised and maligned for his handling of the disaster that forced roughly
13,000 people in High River from their
homes under a mandatory evacuation
order. It was nine days before residents
could begin to return to their homes.
Throughout that time Emile met
with town and provincial authorities
and displaced High River residents in

Assistive technology provides options

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Municipal Library believes in having equal access to materials for all of its patrons, which is why
there is assistive technology in place
for those who need it.
The assistive technology includes
software and hardware that enables the
library staff to assist seniors, students
and people with disabilities.
Theres a large monitor, a large keyboard a special mouse with a three inch
trackball and big buttons. The software
is Read to Write Gold, its a text to
speech program and it assists people
that having reading or writing dyslexia
or learning disabilities, said Courtney
Gordon, CAP coordinator with the library.
There is also Word Q, which is designed to help people who are struggling with their writing; it uses word
prediction to suggest words and help
with spelling while the user is typing a
document or e-mails.
Assistive technology ... really started big in libraries about 10 years ago
and when I started at the Strathmore
Library, because of my past experience
of working with assistive technology
in my previous job, I wanted to have a

computer like this in our library, said

Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services.
Through a grant by the Community
Access Program and by money donated
by W. Brett Wilson and family we were
able to purchase the computer and its
software for our community members.
Another program the library offers is
Solaro. It covers Alberta curriculum for
students in Grades 3-12, offering them
a chance to take quizzes and practice
tests, and track their progress.
Also available at the library is a DAISY e-reader that patrons with print disabilities can be able to borrow.
Assisted technology really helps
break down those barriers that many
individuals have when it comes to using technology and it opens up a whole
new world to people that had those
doors closed, said Erison.
It is convenient as well, this technology. Even if you dont have a disability,
youre just a student looking to transfer
your text book pages into an mp3, its
convenient for that, said Gordon.

In March, we put the spotlight on poison prevention
to raise awareness of possible sources of poisoning
in our homes. Examples include little soft pillows
of detergent for our dish and clothes washers. Purses
may contain medications, toothpaste, nicotine sources
(cigarettes, gums, e-cigarettes) and alcohol found
in perfumes, hand sanitizers and mouthwash. Look
carefully at these poisoning sources and keep your
children safe.
Sometimes, when we reach for another sugarcontaining soft drink, it is beneficial to imagine how
much exercise it takes to burn off those extra calories.
Most of these drinks contain 150 to 170 calories and
41 to 46 grams of sugar. To work off one can, you
would have to walk at medium speed for 38 minutes;
run 6 mph for 13 minutes; ride a bike for 17 minutes.
Kind of puts it into perspective.
Compression stockings have their greatest pressure
at the ankle and reduce going up the leg. They are
helpful in preventing deep vein thrombosis (blood
clots in the lower leg). They may relieve symptoms
and even slow the progress of varicose veins. They
also help prevent the blood from pooling in the lower
legs which can cause skin breakdown. Your doctor
can advise if these stockings will help you.
A blood test is perhaps the most common of
diagnostic tools. Back in 1884, a German scientists

Sticking it to Huntley
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
On Feb. 13 students at Brentwood Elementary
School got to Stick it to their principal Laurie
Huntley. The students purchased lengths of duct
tape and then took turns taping Huntley to a wall
in the gym.
The students raised over $700, which was
matched by Glen Shaw, for the new playground
the school is building.
This isnt the first time Huntley has shown her
pride for the school.
I have been duct taped in the past. Ive actually
put up a tent and spent the night on top of the
school before, I have eaten live bugs, Ive kissed a
pig, said Huntley laughing.
If they raise the money, I will do pretty much
anything they ask me to. The kids love it, the year
we did the bug thing that was probably the toughest one, even the kids were (cringing).
The night she stayed up on the roof was very
windy but still kind of fun. She sat out there in the
evening on a lawn chair and the kids would come
out and say hi.
Im pretty brave for most things and I like it, its
pretty fun to have the kids do stuff and get excited
with you, said Huntley.
The playground project is being put together by
the Friends of Brentwood School Society, which is
a small group of dedicated parent volunteers.
Currently the society is working on raising funds
for the new playground structure. The total cost of
the project is $223,441.15 and there is the possibility of a matching grant through the Community
Facility Enhancement Program in the amount of
$111,172.58.
The new structure will be the third one on the
school grounds. The first is approximately 20
years old, and the most recent one, built in 2010,
is wheelchair accessible.
This new structure will complement the current existing structure and was chosen by the students of Brentwood after Christmas, said Friends
of Brentwood President Michelle Elaschuk.
It will be comprised of a main structure with
lots of climbing ropes, ladders, monkey bars and a
slide, a zip line and the possibility of two saucers
swings.
The Friends of Brentwood School Society was
created to provide an avenue for donors, businesses and community members to be able to support the activities at the school while providing a
strong foundation for the future.
We have done a few fundraising ventures this
year. First was our Farm to School Vegetable sales
fundraiser which raised money and veggies for
the local food bank, said Elaschuk. That saw 250

lbs of potatoes donated, plus carrots, onions, cabbage and parsnips. In January there was a movie
night, February saw Stick It to Huntley and there
are plans in the works for two more fundraisers,
including a community-wide outdoor movie night.
To date the society and the school have managed
to raise $84,207.85 of the necessary $111,172.58
and already have plans on different initiatives that
can raise the remaining $26,964.73.
Huntley praises Elaschuk as being instrumental
in applying for grant funding, and spearheading
some of the fundraisers.
Shes the driving force behind our fundraiser
for the playground, said Huntley.
The reason why I contribute my time and energy into a project like this is I believe in leading
by example starts at home. I try to model good
citizenship. It is what makes things happen and
our community better place to live, said Elaschuk.
I am very lucky to have a great group of parents that are incredibly supportive. Without them,
we would be miles behind where we are now.
The hope is to have the grand opening for
the new structure at the playground in a year
from now, which also happens to be Brentwood
Schools 35th anniversary.

Fildebrandt supports Brian Jean

for Wildrose leader
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
Derek Fildebrandt, the Wildrose candidate for StrathmoreBrooks, introduced Brian Jean
who has entered the Wildrose
leadership race, and announced
his support for him on Feb. 25.
I thought through the decision of whether or not to seek
the leadership thoroughly with
my friends, family and supporters and decided that I wanted
to focus on Strathmore-Brooks
and rebuilding the party and
focusing on providing a solid financial platform for the party,
said Fildebrandt.
Jean has 10 years experience
as MP for Fort McMurray-Athabasca. Fildebrandt feels Jean is
a solid fiscal conservative that
has the experience necessary
to lead the party, especially on

such short notice.

I think Alberta deserves a
well-run efficient government
that applies good Albertan common sense and the Alberta work
ethic to the important activities
of government, said Jean in a
press release.
I think small government,
low taxes, and common-sense
efficiencies are how you actually serve people. Those are
Wildrose principles, they have
always been my principles.
These
are
extraordinary
times, and I thought I was capable of doing it, but that I
would require some time to be
prepared for an election and I
think 48 hours is not enough
time for me to prepare, said Fildebrandt.
I felt this was the best thing
for the party and the province
and Alberta deserves a real al-

ternative and an effective opposition and to do that we have to

run a strong campaign to give
Albertans that alternative and
Brian can best lead that.
Fildebrandt said Prentice
wants no opposition in the legislature, but he doesnt think Albertans are going to buy it.
I think Albertans have been
very well served by having a
competitive democratic system
for the last three years with an
official opposition that until
most of it crossed the floor was
doing a very good job, said Fildebrandt.
No one knows exactly when
the election is going to be, but it
is suspected that it will be coming in April. Fildebrandt said
Wildrose would have a leader in
place, a full platform, and good,
quality candidates. They will be
very competitive this election.

Small Communities Fund

launched
FROM THE OFFICE OF
KEVIN SORENSON

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Crowfoot, and Minister of State (Finance) is advising
local small municipalities that the Province of Alberta has launched the intake portal for the Small
Communities Fund under the Building Canada
Fund (BCF).
As part of the New Building Canada Fund,
launched in March 2014, the Small Communities
Fund (SCF) designates $94 million in federal funding to support infrastructure projects in Alberta
communities with a population of 100,000 or less,
said Sorenson. I encourage all municipal leaders
in our riding to investigate the opportunity to apply.

To apply visit: http://www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/smallcommunitiesfund.cfm

Deadline for applications is April 2.
The Small Communities Fund is focused on supporting local priorities that contribute to economic
growth, a cleaner environment and stronger communities. The program continues the tradition of
cost-sharing infrastructure investments among the
three levels of government: federal, provincial, mu-
nicipal, Sorenson continues. This is in an addition
to communities using the Gas Tax Fund towards
a wide range of projects including: public transit,
drinking water, wastewater, solid waste management, green energy, innovation, connectivity and
broadband, brownfield redevelopment, disaster
mitigation infrastructure, local and regional airports, short-line rail, highways and major roads.

Drive my car
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Before I start this latest column, I did hear a joke
on the radio that I thought might appeal to some
of my rural readers. You know, when you have to
walk out to the old outhouse when nature calls!
Anyway, there was a travelling ventriloquist,
whose car broke down at an out of the way farm.
The farmer said he could stay the night, but hed
have to sleep in the barn with the animals. The
hired hand walked the ventriloquist to the barn to
help get him settled. Well, the ventriloquist thought
itd be funny to throw his voice, and make it seem
like the cow talked. So, he did, and the hired hand
was flabbergasted!
Did you hear that cow talk? he asked the
stranger.
The ventriloquist replied, well son, I have a
way with animals, and theyll actually talk to me.
Watch.
The ventriloquist had the barn cat say a few
words, and again the hired hand was shocked.
You see, I can make animals talk to me, he
stated.
The hired hand blurted out, yeah, well, just so
ya know, whatever that damn sheep says, hes a
damn liar!
This past week, my wife Debbies principal, had
a major landmark of a birthday. Now, its not polite
to talk about a ladys age, but the heat from that
birthday cake forced a lot of the teachers out of
the staff room! The night before, we had to set
up for this cake bonfire, and had to deliver balloons and decorations to the school. Now, in my
defense, the back of the SUV was full of decorations and helium balloons. Its true that our new
SUV has a colour backup screen on the dash, and
it has warning lights on the side mirrors as well
as a backup alarm that beeps when something is
behind you. We also have side mirrors that actually
tilt down to show you the curb as you reverse. Its
also true, that with all these safety features, I still
backed up into my sons car! BAM! The first word
out of my mouth was sorry.
You see, this SUV is Debbies baby. Im the guy
who buys a 1994 Mustang twice shes the
one who gets her purchase right on the first try!
Deb was actually quite calm, and when we surveyed the scene, there was surprisingly no damage
to either vehicle! Now, The Walking Dead was

on, and thats a show where I am so scared and

focused, that Im aware of little else. In fact, there
have been episodes where Ive been so scared, Im
not sure if my bladder didnt empty a bit! Twenty
minutes into the show, Deb came down and whispered, did you tell Brennen yet?
Tell me what? Brennen asked, with a look of
suspicion on his face. So, I explained the whole
thing and reassured him that everything was fine
and there was no damage. Silence followed.
Huh, Brennen said. You always taught us to
be honest. When were you planning to be honest?
Im sorry, I got watching the zombies I forgot! I lamely replied.
Brennen stared at me and with a sarcastic tone
(much harsher than necessary, by the way) stated,
you know, something like this shows a guy a lot
about another guys character.
He had me I was a goner, and all I could do
was keep apologizing while the show was paused.
I tried the old husband strategy of changing the
subject.
You know what protected your car Brennen
was all the layers of dirt on it. Whens the last time
you washed it?
Nice try, Dad. You hit my parked car with one
of the top Safety Rated SUVs on the market, he
mocked.
So, while he refereed basketball, I decided Id,
you know, make up for this. I gassed up his beast,
and took it to the car wash. The first stall kept
dropping all my coins through, and I had to back
out to another one. The only thing on my mind
was dont hit anything!
So, I put down the drivers side back window to
see, got into a stall, threw in the coins, and proceeded to spray the hot, soapy water through that
same back window that I hadnt raised!
It was only for a few seconds, but enough to
bring a lustrous sheen to his back seats! This time,
I fessed up right away, and told him he had the
shiniest back seats in town! Sometimes it takes a
village to raise a dad and teach him that honesty
is the best policy!

LOVE, IN A NUTSHELL
Christianity. Is it really,
as some assume a holier than thou complex?
Rather, may I suggest, it is
a learn as you go experience. Is it keeping set
rules and regulations (The
Ten Commandments)?
Why then are so many that
would not label themselves Christian, living
by the same moral code
(which God wrote on the
hearts of men)? Is it simply
tradition to be Christian
by default, if one does not
claim any other specific
religion? How can that
produce what some may
call fanatics?
Love, in a nutshell, is the
gospel.
Gospel meaning a message that is nearly too
good to be true! Gods true
love for mankind is what
melted my heart. True Love
does not exist without Justice (pause and think about

that). The Bible reveals

who God is: He is both
Love and Justice. There
was a price to be paid for
the sins of the world.
God paid it so as to restore
men back into relationship
with Himself, which was
the reason He created
us in the first place. How
He paid it! Sin no longer
stands between us and
God. The Justice in God
has been appeased by
His Love. You and I had all
this done for us, to receive
as a gift; or refuse. My
inclination was to receive
all that had been done for
me. The words to the song
How many Kings by the
band Down here, pierces
my heart every time I hear
it: No other Father gave
up his Son for me - Only
One did that for me...

Standing up to terrorism - at home

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT
PARLIAMENTARY REPORT
At home in Alberta, we have all been concerned
about the recent release of a propaganda video
from the terrorist organization Al-Shabaa calling for jihadist attacks to be targeted at a series
of shopping centers in the West, including West
Edmonton Mall. Shortly after the threats were released, the Edmonton Police Service and RCMP
responded stating that while there is no imminent
threat, police are taking the issue seriously.
According to media reports following the threats,
while visitors to the mall noticed an increase in
security presence, there has been no detectable
drop in the number of shoppers. As your Member
of Parliament, I am proud that our fellow Albertans north of us are not intimidated. Under the
leadership of our Prime Minister Stephen Harper,
our government has been steadfast insisting that
the Government of Canada, our military and security forces, and Canadians themselves will not be
intimidated by threats from any terrorist organization.
Canadas national security agencies will not hesitate to take all appropriate actions to counter any
terrorist threat to Canada, our citizens and our interests around the world. It is however important
that we remain vigilant.
The international jihadist movement has declared war on us. We are being targeted simply
because these terrorists hate our society and the
values we represent and hold dear.
That is why we have put forward legislative proposals for Parliament to debate that will work to
protect Canadians from jihadi terrorists. Canadians want to maintain a good balance between the

rights and freedoms that define our society and

the need to protect ourselves from the harm being
threatened by jihadists. That is also why Canada is
not sitting on the sidelines as some would have
us do and we are joining our allies in supporting
the international coalition in the fight against ISIL.
At the end of March, Parliament will be asked
to consider further efforts that may extend and
expand the current mission against ISIL and
whether Canada should extend our mission to
Syria and Libya. We will need to assess what our
nation can contribute and how we can best be of
assistance to the efforts of our allies who are continuing the flight.
Previous generations of Canadians have grappled with these issues. In WWI, the world learned
about Canadas willingness to help from the great
heroics and sacrifice of our nation.
In the ensuing global conflicts (WWII, Korea,
and most recently Afghanistan) the world learned
that Canada is serious about protecting our way of
life. While we live in a peaceful and strong democratic nation that we built together under the rule
of law, we must defend our freedoms - freedoms
such as the right to privacy, lawful advocacy, protest, dissent and artistic expression, as we have
always done historically. With that said, lets go to
the mall!

Hale steps back from politics

Dear Friends
Serving as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for the constituents of StrathmoreBrooks has been a privilege and honour. I have
had the opportunity to meet many interesting
individuals and to work with great communityminded groups dedicated to building our communities, and I want to thank them for the service
they give to our constituency and its people.
We are very blessed to have diverse and dynamic industries in Alberta, and in my travels across
the province for both political and private-sector
business, I have had the opportunity to experience many of these companies excelling in their
work, and providing sustainability for Albertans.
For the past 11 years, I have spent much of my
time working away from home as an oil/gas drilling consultant and now as your MLA. My family
and I own and operate a cattle ranch; however,
that family business has taken a back seat to my
time away from home. My wife and I have recently been re-evaluating our business and reconsidering concentrating on it for the benefit of our
boys. Our young sons are interested in expand-

ing our agriculture operation and my wife and I

look forward to working with them to achieve this
goal, and helping get them set up for their futures.
Therefore, my family and I have decided that this
will be our focus.
We have, therefore, decided I will finish my current term in politics and then take a step back for
the time being. I will not seek re-election at this
time.
While I am stepping away from full-time political life, I will remain involved in serving our
community and province. I am proud to support
Premier Prentice and his plan for restoring Albertas fiscal foundation and his vision for Albertas
future.
My time as your MLA has truly been a remarkable experience and I am grateful for all the
friendships Ive made.
Maggie, our sons and I would like to thank the
constituents of Strathmore-Brooks and the people
of Alberta for giving me the opportunity to serve
them in public office.

New Blood show

brings healing and
reconciliation
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

The glee, dance and Blackfoot classes of Strathmore High School have joined with drummers
from Siksika Nation to create and perform New
Blood, the story of Siksika Chief Vincent Yellow
Old Woman.
Creation of the show began early in the school
year, when teacher Deanne Bertsch invited her
dance students to work with students from the
Blackfoot class to devise a show based on Peter
Gabriels New Blood soundtrack. They invited
parents of the Blackfoot students to give input,
and to perform traditional music and dances in
the program.
The program took focus when they received
two poems Words to a Grandchild by Chief Dan
George, and The Indian in Me, by the current
chief of the Siksika Nation, Vincent Yellow Old
Woman, whose grandson Hayden attends Strathmore High School.
The Indian in Me is about the chiefs experience
in residential schools, and the students focused
the show on telling that story, with Hayden Cutter
Yellow Old Woman playing the part of his grandfather, telling his story in a way that other resi-

dential school survivors connect with their own

experience.
How the show grew from there is amazing,
Bertsch says.
It feels kind of divine, which fits, she says,
because, The whole show is a prayer. The show
starts with the Blackfoot Prayer thats really important to the Blackfoot people ... Words to a
Grandchild is kind of a prayer too.
Our biggest hope was that we would honour
the Blackfoot people and the First Nations people.
She felt thats exactly what happened when
they gave their first performance in Strathmore.
The parents and grandparents and all the people that came from Siksika ... were just kind of
blown away by their kids and by the show and by
the story they were telling, she says. They were
really moved and they said that it was bringing
about healing for their people.
Vincent Yellow Old Woman himself was in the
audience, and he was really happy, Bertsch says.
He said he didnt expect (the show) to have the
power that it had.
They were invited to perform New Blood on the
Siksika Nation, and more invitations began flowing in. They performed in Drumheller in January,
and this month, theyll take it to the University of
Lethbridge and Big Secret Theatre in Calgary.
Bertsch says the show also brings greater understanding and compassion to non-native audiences. Audience members keep saying they want
so badly for Haydens character to overcome all
these trials, she says, and its all the more powerful because these trials arent fiction. Those are
real trials that so many First Nations people had
to live with.
The story and its telling have affected Bertsch
and the students just as deeply. She considers it a
huge gift that shes had the opportunity to develop friendships with parents of Blackfoot students.
Even more important, she says, is the way
that it has brought our students together, because
even in Strathmore High School where kids from
Siksika have gone for years and years, theres still
such separation. But now Im seeing my dance
class students becoming friends with the Blackfoot students.
Seeing the response of those who lived this
story originally has had the strongest impact on
them.
For all of us, the students and myself, Bertsch
says, just seeing the elders, especially when we
performed at Siksika, with tears flowing down
their faces and embracing those kids and saying
thank you, thank you for doing this, and show-

ing the kids how much it meant to them that was pretty
powerful.
The students and I think that this is the most important
show weve ever done and probably will ever do because it
has the power to heal. Its an important story that everyone
should hear and see.
New Blood performs at the Big Secret Theatre in Calgary
on March 14 at 7:30 p.m., or March 15 at 2 p.m. and 7:30
p.m. For tickets call 403-294-9494 or go to www.artscommons.ca.

Polonich has been very thrilled with the response of the
players.
I sent off an e-mail because these requests come quite
often to the alumni. So because Im championing this event
with Neal Coulter through Colleen (Huber) detailing what
the event is, said Polonich.
And because there is so many alumni in the Calgary area,
you quickly get 10-15 responses.
He added that the players like to come to these events just
to give back.
They like giving back, and its a fun way for us to get together, (enjoy the) camaraderie and the jokes in the dressing
room, those things will never go away, he said.
Polonich was involved in helping the committee with ideas
of fundraising for the event and came up with giving people the opportunity to auction themselves off to play in the
game.
It went great, theyre apparently sweet players that have
paid to play with us. They get a Flames jersey and well autograph the jersey for them and they get to dress in our dressing room and hang with the guys, its a great experience for
them, said Polonich.
The lucky auction winners were Derek Alce from Carseland, John Gauvin of Strathmore and Keith Van Bavel, also
from Strathmore.
The coachs spot was unable to be auctioned off, however,
they still raised over $1,000 for the games.

Jacob Moon in Strathmore

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Performer Jacob Moon is performing at the Hope Community Covenant
Church March 14. This will be the singersongwriters first time coming to Strathmore, and hes excited to bring his eclectic style to the stage.
I actually do this thing called live
looping where I am able to kind of create more sounds than just the one that
Im playing live, said Moon.
I kind of layer sound on sound to create almost like an orchestra and so in
that way I am able to kind of make people not miss the band too much, because
I travel solo a lot.
Moon is known for his original music
but also for some of the covers he has
done. His renditions of songs by Rush,
Marillion and Gordon Lightfoot have
opened up doors for him, including the
opportunity to be the opening act for
those artists.
Back in the early days of jazz people
were writing a lot of new material and
then it sort of hit a point where it wasnt
as important to write new material, it
was important what you were going to
say with your own voice on the songs
that people knew, recognized, or that
were just great songs, said Moon.
So to me, I love to write songs and

I do it all the time, but if I can kind of

bring something cool to the stage with
a song that some people know or that
I just really think that I can arrange in
a different way, then I love to do that
because it really gives people a point of
reference for where Im at musically. It
also joins me up with fans all over the
world who are also fans of the bands Im
covering.
This year marks the 20th anniversary
of making music full time for Moon, who
is planning Moon-Con back in Hamilton,
Ont. this April.
I love the endless quest that is music,
just writing a song, writing a better song,
becoming a better musician, its just
something that I never stopped wanting
to do, it never finishes, said Moon.
Its one of those jobs where you can
never get to the point where oh Im good
enough, thats fine, well stop there, you
always know that you just have so much
further to go.
The concert is being held at Hope
Church on March 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets are
$20 and can be purchased at Kims Caf,
Marlin Travel, Assist Business Centre and
Pro Water, and on the strathmorearts.
com website. Students going to the Covenant High in Christ will be selling coffee, tea, and dessert items to help fund
a trip to Tennessee in July for a youth
conference.

School on Jan. 29 as a school spirit day. Students were allowed to wear a hat and chew gum
in school, which is normally against the rules. If
they did wear a hat and chew gum, students were
asked to bring in change (a loonie or a toonie) to
raise money for World Vision. The girls raised
$413 and donated it on Feb. 27. Youth and student engagement representative for World Vision
Isabella Pacchiano (centre) said the money will
go to water projects, to schools that dont have
books, for students who dont know how to read
and other projects that help make life better for
those in need. It was very powerful for the girls
to know that their money was going to improving
schools which, in turn, will help kids learn to read
and write.

Strathmore gymnast Montana Fairbairn, 12, recently competed in Elite
Canada held in Quebec Jan. 29-Feb.
1. The young athlete has been training since she was four, but only began
competing a few years ago.
She now takes part in approximately
10 competitions per year, and trains six
days a week at Stampede City Gymnastics Club in Calgary.
I train every day except for Saturday
for four and a half hours, except for
Wednesday which is only three and a
half, said Fairbairn.
That hard work is paying off. Fairbairn is currently ranked seventh in
Canada in the High Performance Novice Category, which her coach Judy
Holmes says is a tremendous accomplishment.
She is a young up-and-coming athlete still learning to compete with lots
of potential, said Holmes.
Fairbairn has a goal of making it to
the Olympics, and her first chance to
be eligible will be in Japan 2020.
I have to work hard and put 100 per
cent effort every day and most of all
enjoy what I am doing, said Fairbairn
about what she needs to do to accomplish that goal.
The first step to the Olympics is to
work hard enough and be consistent
enough to be named to the Junior National Team.
She needs to continue to add high
level International difficulty content to

all her routines and work at executing

these skills to the highest possible level, said Holmes.
Once attaining National Team status
she will have many more opportunities to gain the much-needed experience competing for Canada as a junior
in high level International invitationals
and championships. These challenges
will aid her in dealing with the stresses
that surround trials to attaining Senior
National Team status which leads to
Olympic Trials.
Fairbairn will be competing in Nationals again this year and is excited
about her new floor routine. Working
the mat, showing off, smiling and dancing for the judges is still her favourite
part of the sport.

shaping up to be another
enjoyable one for young

This year is the same
as all years, kindergarten

session and then Grade

There will be an hour
of skill and then in the

their skills to the test in a

have new games and
a couple new coaches
which is exciting. We already have lots of kids
signed up, just from returning players.
The new coaches will
use their knowledge to
help the kids along with
skill development.
I have six new coaches
and like to have many as
possible just for one-onone, the kids love having
them, said Gieck. (For)

The fee for the program
is $98.95 and it covers the

players get.
The camp will begin

Strathmore football a community association

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore High School Spartans are taking
over full operation of their new school football
team starting next season, while the Strathmore
Community Football Association will continue
with their separate senior team for all players to
play.
Strathmore High Schools Kyle Larson felt that
the school needed more involvement in the team
and it was time to take over.
Were in position now having a staff member
whos keen and wants to be involved in the football for us to run it as the rest of our high school
sports, said Larson.
Larsons hope is that they can maintain a great
relationship with the community association so
they can work with one another.
It would certainly be our hope that we dont
want to see it fractured at all, said Larson. There
have been people involved in community football
for a long time and our hope is to take it to the
next step now with more school involvement.
I know parents in the association were interested in pursuing a high school-aged team beB:10.333

cause potentially there is a need for kids that are

not in our school, but that has been a small number in the past few years.
We had a parent meeting here last week. The
high school team that was here with the community association, they still have to register with us
through the school.
The Strathmore Community Football Association is allowing players from other schools to participate.
We were talking for some time to make this
change and we lost some real good athletes once
they hit that high school level (as) they werent
allowed to play football and now that weve made
that change those kids are excited to return and
words getting out and it will be an exciting year,
said Brad Miedmass, a coach in the association.
As soon as we posted this change, it wasnt even
five minutes and I was being contacted by some
of those kids at the Catholic School. Its a move
we shouldve done sooner but its the right time
for the association to make this move, its more
of what were about, which is community-based
football.
Kids will also be accepted from all the high
schools and communities such as Standard, Glei-

chen and Langdon, which was not an option before.

Registration is open. Spring camp, which will begin in

Bisons dethrone Royals, off to Chrysler Division final

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons thought they would have had a much
stiffer test from the Calgary Royals, but instead they played
a fundamentally sound series en route to sweeping it 3-0.
In the 5-4 Game 1 win on Feb. 26, assistant coach Sandy
Henry thought it was a good indication of how well the
boys really played.
I think the key for us is that weve played closer to 60
minutes than maybe we did in the first series against the
Flames, said Henry. When we started out at the Stu on
Thursday, we got out to a real good start, we were physical. We put a lot of pressure on their guys and turned
some pucks over and finished when we needed to.
Kyle Gordon, Jordan McConnell, Barrett Sheen, Will
Conley and Quaid McBean scored in the victory
The Royals came out flat in Game 2 on Feb. 28 and the
Herd was able to take advantage of it as they dominated
from start to finish in a 5-0 victory.
(In Game 2) we got out to a great start, we got pucks
pushed deep (and) put some pressure on their defense,
said Henry. We started being physical with them and got
that goal and just started to role.
We were able to play four lines and they were exceptional. They did the things we asked, we had a defensive
presence getting back.
Conley, Zach Vinnell, Austin Cameron, Cole Noble and
Gary Haden scored in the win.
Game 3 saw the Bisons thump the Royals 9-2 in the
series clinching game and head coach Dan MacDonald

gave credit to his goalie for weathering the storm early on.
Well it sure went our way, everything we shot went
in, said MacDonald. Kurtis (Chapman) was very good
in the first period, I thought they were all over us you
wouldnt know it by the 4-0 score and their shots were
quality shots.
We were really getting to be resilient they got a couple of goals early in the second period and maybe they
could have got some momentum, but we just refused to
allow it.
He did admit that it was a slow start for the team and
the players got ahead of themselves.
We came out flat in the second and I think we thought
we had it won and they got momentum and it was 4-2 after two and we got that fifth goal and that really set them
back, said MacDonald.
Haden led the way with a hat trick, while captain Shane
Fraser had two. McConnell, Noble, Sheen and Markus Lavallee all added singles in the win.
The Bisons will face either the Calgary Buffaloes or Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Chrysler Division Final.
MacDonald fully expects to play the Buffaloes and
knows it will be an uphill battle with the best team in the
league.
Theyre small and fast, theyve got good scoring with
that Phillips kid, said MacDonald. Were going to have to
be very good in our defensive zone and I still dont think
were as good as we want to be.
Game 1 of the divisional final will start Sunday, March.
8.

Chaos spike into

inaugural season
JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Strathmore U13 and U14 club volleyball team is getting prepared to start their
inaugural season, and the players are very
excited to get it underway.
The team was established in early January
by two coaches, Vito Peraino and Greg Appleyard, who co-coached volleyball at Holy
Cross Collegiate earlier in the year.
We coached the Grade 7 and 8 HCC team
together this year and I think weve seen
how much enthusiasm, and how much those
girls appreciated and enjoyed themselves,
said Appleyard. We just had discussions
on if it was worthwhile trying to continue
on with the program and the only thing I
wanted to make sure is that we had a lady
coach on the bench as well. Lindsay Hall
from Crowther said shed be happy with
work with the system, when she committed
then we started to put out feelers to see who
would be interested.
The interest was high and the coaches
had no choice but to make two teams out of
the turn out they got.
I think 27 girls come out to try-out and
our ideal situation was that we were going
to pick a travel team and have a developmental team. But because of how many
people we had try out, we decided just to
do practices where we had a U13 with some
developmental and then a U14 team, said
Appleyard.
The team wants to compete at a higher
caliber of volleyball, but know they will
have to rely on the experienced players.
Weve already entered the U14s in nationals. Were trying to be competitive at a
provincial level but in your first couple of
years it tough to compete right off the bat
because some of these girls have been playing for the last few years, said Appleyard.
Were going to set up some exhibition
games with these other towns, Brooks, Airdrie and Calgary club teams. Well probably
compete in two to three tournaments and
provincials.
The cost is $400 to play for the travel team
because of various expenses.
The team will play in some exhibition
games in Strathmore throughout the year.
Appleyard wants to thank all the people
that are volunteering to run the club as he
said it could not be run without the countless hours that they are putting in.

The Wheatland Kings

would like to thank all the

Cougars show determination

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Crowther Memorial

Junior High School Cougars
senior boys and girls basketball teams showed determination and a hard work ethic
during their home tournament on Feb. 27-28.
Boys coach Matthew Laslo
thought that his team became a tighter knit group
throughout the tournament.
We had a bit of a heartbreaker in the first game, and
lost a game that I feel like
we should have won. But we
played very well in the final
two games, really played like
a team, helping each other,
and passing to get everyone
easy baskets, said Laslo.
He felt that they used their
size to their advantage when
driving to the hoop.
We have a big team this
year, so it keeps us in most

games. As well, we have a

deep bench with lots of players being able to step in and
play effective roles on the
team, said Laslo.
The boys were letting up
on defence a little bit and
Laslo admits that was out of
the norm as they were not
playing as a team.
In our first game we
didnt really play good team
basketball. We were all trying to get our own shots as
individuals, and not passing
to each other to get everyone
involved, said Laslo.
As well we really struggled to keep our defense
checks so they were scoring
a lot of easy baskets that we
usually dont let teams get.
The team has come a long
way, considering the number
of new players on the team
new to the sport.
It has been a work in progress. We knew going into the

season that we didnt have a

ton of basketball experience
as a team so all season long
has been a learning process,
said Laslo.
Despite the inexperience
he admits that hard work
makes up for it.
The most consistent thing
for us is our work ethic. Every one of our players works
hard especially on defense,
and when were all working hard together we have a
chance in every game, said
Laslo.
The team goal is to win
zones next weekend and to
play as a team.
Meanwhile, Scott Kollers
girls fared really well on
their side of the tournament
as they finished strong.
Our girls played really
well. We won third on our
side of the draw, said Koller.
He wanted to try new plays
with his team and they were

able to adapt rather quickly.

We played great defence.
We tried some new things
that we have not worked
on very much and the girls
picked them up and had success with them, said Koller.
He added that some more
baskets made would have
been an improvement in the
tournament.
The girls have been fortunate to experience a great
amount of success so far this
season.
Our season has been
great. We have a great group
of girls who work hard and
we have been on the championship side of most of our
tournaments this year, said
Koller.
The numbers have been
low for the team, but they
are always hardworking and
determined and hope to do
well at zones this upcoming
weekend.

Expressions, the Dance Gallery in

Strathmore has had a very successful
year providing a fun environment for
dancers to enhance their skills.
Were having a fabulous year, weve
been in town for 12 years, but this is our
32nd year as a dance studio, said Heather Thomas, studio founder and teacher.
We were talking as teachers, and what
were really excited about, is its really
cool to see how the kids that have been
here from Day 1 are developing now are
becoming intermediate advanced dancers and theyre starting to really shine
and grow.
Thomas added that the studio would
not be able to run without the teachers
and staff who develop the dancers immensely with their experience.
I think that it shows that we really
have excellent faculty, teachers that still
are training, performing, staying up with
the times and new techniques, and the
fact that our kids are really dedicated,
said Thomas. We have a lot of kids that
we classify as full-time dancers, theyre
here five days a week with their commitment, and its starting to really shine
through.
The studio offers a variety of classes,

which is new this year.
New for us are some of our pre-school
programs which is our hop, skip, jump
and our parent assisted, taught program.
Then also weve expanded next door and
we have a third bay and so we have acrodance which includes and jazz and ballet
dance or lyrical dance and also weve expanded into aerial, said Thomas.
The music that is played will vary
based on the age group and what class
theyre in.
Ballet is classical, except if its a preschool class then well keep it more
simple with Strawberry Shortcake. The
same thing with hip hop, if its a younger set of kids and its hip hop then you
got to stay more in the pop music, said
Thomas.
If the kids participate at the dance
studio throughout the year, they will get
the opportunity to dance in the year-end
event.
For every student that participated
throughout the year, they get the opportunity to perform at the Jubilee Auditorium on June 20. Its open for every
student of every age, said Thomas.

SMHA teams soar into postseason

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) brass could not be any happier to see how much success teams have had in the 2014-2015 season, as 18 of
22 squads made it to the postseason.
That has been the highest amount of teams in recent memory.
I think this is the best number since I joined the board. That means we put
most of the players where they belong and have most of the teams where they
belong in the Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL), said Blair Wilson, SMHA
president.
In the tiering rounds, its tough to tell where a team is going to belong. I think
we only had two misplaced (teams) this year, so that makes a big difference.
Wilson believes that a lot of the success this year has to do with the coaching
that is involved.
Weve got a lot of great coaches that really know the system, said Wilson.
Theyre asking a lot of questions and want to learn more with doing some of
those coaching clinics with Dan (MacDonald) and trying to get coaches to participate in them.
Its a good indication of player development. I really believe that a lot of our
teams ended up in the Top 4 or 5.

The credit goes to the association of how they develop the players.
I think its more in general a minor hockey philosophy to try to develop our
players, said Wilson. Its not to become the NHL star, but to succeed.
The biggest factor that he thought contributed to the turnaround was the evaluation process.
Vice president, and soon-to-be president, Kevin Brelis, thought the success of
the teams came from everyone involved in the association.
It makes me proud of our community, said Brelis, our coaches and all the
other people involved in hockey, at all levels in and around Strathmore,
He believes that the consistency of teams this year was work in progress over
the last number of years and that was built up with the right people involved.
This isnt just a reflection of this years effort, it has been an evolving process
over the past several years, involving lots of dedicated people with the right motivations, said Brelis. I believe we are just starting to see the fruits of all that
work.
He added that this will ease him into his role next year, but knows the focus is
for the task at hand.
It sets high expectations for sure, and expectations keep everyone working
hard to strive to keep getting better, said Brelis. Its important for us to keep
our focus though, which should continue to be around player skill development,
as it has been.

Braves and Chiefs move on

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Braves saw a test from
the Sylvan Lake Lakers in their second
round matchup, but managed to sweep
them in two games to advance to the
divisional final against Olds.
Head coach Keith Klemmensen
thought the start in the first game, an
8-5 win on Feb. 28, could have been
better executed.
We started out okay but we got a little
slack in the third period and the other
team got closer to us than we shouldve
allowed, said Klemmensen. We kind
of gave them a reason to think that they
had more hope than we needed to give
them.
This was the most goals that the local
double-A peewee team allowed in quite
some time and it was because of some
lapses on the ice.
The reason we had that many goals
against is because we werent working
hard enough over 200 feet of the ice
for the whole game and thatll translate
into goals against every time, said Klemmensen.
Matthew Quebec, Brayden Kapty, Nolan Bailey, Adam Kirkpatrick, Kyle Bray,
Kyle Crnkovic, Max Kathol and Mo Hakim scored in the win.
Klemmensen was more thrilled with
the 4-2 win in Game 2 on March 1,
which swept the series 2-0.
We outshot that team 61-21, after
one we had 25 shots and after two we
had 43 shots. We finally broke through
in the third period with three goals, but
you know youre going to have games
sometimes where the puck dont go
in, said Klemmensen. We were getting pucks to the net pretty good, we
were having trouble locating rebounds.
We got some great shots and opportunities.
It was Bailey, Zach Nicholls, Max
Schafer and Tristan Zandee that provided the offence.

Now the Braves look ahead to the

North Division Finals against the Olds
Grizzlys starting March 7 in Strathmore.
We have a challenge in front of us,
we got a team that is every bit as good
as we are. Well see if were made out of
the stuff that its going to take to go further, said Klemmensen. This is a good
team were playing against, it dont matter, and this is going to be as tough a
challenge that well face this year.
CHIEFS NEED OVERTIME
TO FINISH VENOM
The Wheatland Chiefs survived a
hardworking Medicine Hat Venom team
that gave them a scare at moments in
the series, but were able to hold on for
a 7-3 victory in Game 1 on Feb. 28 and a
4-3 overtime win in Game 2 on March 1.
Assistant coach Matt Gass thought
they were able to sustain enough pressure to not give the Venom any sort of
momentum in Game 1.
I thought the guys came out well, we
had a couple weeks off so it was important to get a good start on them, said
Gass. You dont want to fall behind to
a team like that, we got the lead and
never looked back.
The team worked hard and never
gave up. The first two periods we dominated them and kept it simple.
Jayse Wilson and Ryan Skytt each had
two apiece, while Jason Hobson, Jayden
Smith and Kyle Rosolowski also scored
in the series opener.
In Game 2, the local double-A midget
team let off a little bit and had some
penalty trouble, but were able to end
the series early in overtime.
We outplayed them quite a bit in
the first period and we only scored one
goal which didnt help and in the second period we let off (with) some mental lapses for about 10 minutes, said
head coach Devin Olson.
Olson felt that the boys raised the
tempo a notch and that is what led to
the domination in overtime.

We got to overtime and the guys

kicked it into another gear and just
dominated them. They never crossed
the red line, said Olson.
James Farmer scored two including
the overtime winner, while Wilson and
Cole Busslinger added singles.
The Chiefs will play the Okotoks Oilers in the South Division Final starting
March 6 in Strathmore.
The thing with Okotoks is if you
can stick with them in the first period
they came out in all three games weve
played them they came out as hard as
they could, said Olson. I think if we
can keep it close for the first period I
think well be alright because they seem
to fold up after that.
WARRIORS FORCE GAME 3
The Bow Valley Timberwolves
shocked many by walking out of the
Strathmore Family Centre on Feb. 28
with a 3-2 double overtime win in Game
1 over the Wheatland Warriors.
The local double-A bantam team was
on the unfortunate end on the gamewinning goal, as they had to kill a penalty early in the second overtime.
Bow Valley was able to open the scoring in the first and take that lead into
the intermission before Jayden Hendricks was able to tie it up in the middle
frame on the power play.
The visitors were able to restore their
lead with a shorthanded marker seven
minutes into the third before Jordan
Hansen tied it with eight minutes to go.
In Game 2, the Warriors were able
to get an 8-5 win on March 1 to force
Game 3.
Tyler Cardomone and Jayden Hendricks got hat tricks while Tanner Boutin and Hassan Akl got one each in the
win.
Game 3 was played on March 4 at the
Strathmore Family Centre (result was
unavailable as of press time).

Strathmore Soccer Federation continues development

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Strathmore Soccer Federation is looking forward to
the upcoming season to continue to have success of advancing players through drop-in leagues and to get kids
more engaged in the sport.
We want to pursue the numbers of getting kids into soccer as inexpensively as possible. Ive operated a drop-in
program, last summer was the first time weve had one side
of the field for the younger kids and the other side for the
adults, said Mark Shorhen, Strathmore Soccer Federation
president.
Were hoping to continue to grow that, its just a fun
drop-in, nothing super structured or anything. Theres
probably one of the bigger things Id like to see grow this
year because weve went from five or six players all the way
up to 30.
Shorhen added that if players like the drop-in program
then they can branch off up into the competitive and the
organized section of the association.
The indoor season is still ongoing, so registration for out-

door has not yet gotten under way, but will begin at the end
of the month in hopes of an April start.
The registration hasnt really done anything just because
were playing the indoor season, usually we dont until the
end of February see a lot of people registering, said Shorhen. Weve seen an increase in the lower age groups, with
our U10 and U12, usually well just put in a single team. The
last couple of years, weve had two team of each (and) in
some categories weve had a complete girls team.
The girls teams have seen greater registration numbers
because of the influences that recent events such as the
Olympic soccer that have had on them, and the affordability.
I think the Olympics had a fair bit to do with it and that
soccer is still an inexpensive sport, you dont need a lot of
equipment and not a lot of travelling, said Shorhen. Now
that we have our own fields, at least half of the games are
in Strathmore.
The U4, U6 and U8 are $100 for the season. Older players
start at $215 and go up from there based on age groups.
For more information and to register, players can log onto
their website (www. strathmoresoccer.ca).

A special thanks is being extended to the

donations and continued support over the years!
