ADMISSIONS EXAM in CONDUCTING

The admissions exam consists of the following parts:

1. Evidence of conducting talent by conducting prepared works:


Choral conducting:
a) A vocal work which will be announced to the applicant when he/she applies
for the admissions exam, for instance, Goffredo Petrassi: Nonsense
(1952), Coro a capella
b) A large chorus from an opera or an oratorio from an
epoch of choice.
Orchestra conducting:
Two works of differing style epochs which will be announced to the applicant
when he/she applies for the admissions exam, for instance, a movement from
"L`Histoire du Soldat" by Igor Stravinsky and a classical or romantic
symphony .
Orchestra and choral conducting:
a) Two works of differing style epochs which will be announced to the applicant
when he/she applies for the admissions exam, for instance, a movement from
"L`Histoire du Soldat" by Igor Stravinsky and a Classical or Romantic era symphony
b) A large chorus from an opera or an oratorio from an epoch of choice

2. Verification of piano proficiency:


Audition of two prepared piano pieces of medium difficulty, one of which is from the 20th
century
or
a piano piece of choice and a technically demanding piece on an

another instrument, or, if applicable, performance of a song at a professional level.

a) Presentation of a short opera scene from a German-language or an
Italian opera at the piano (for instance, the Agatha aria, 1. aria of Belmonte)
b. Sight reading of an opera or oratorio excerpt from the piano reduction

4. Written exam to verify theory, ear-training and analysis knowledge.


Theory
Realisation of a four-part figured bass; harmonisation of an assigned
melody; the start of a one-part line is to be continued and
brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

Type of examination:
A figured bass is assigned. This is to be realised with four parts according to
authentic rules of style.
An assigned melody is to be fully realised with three to four parts in a
unified style.
A melody is to be worked out contrapuntally with two or three parts.
The start of a one-voice line is to be further realised and brought to a
satisfactory conclusion.

Listening
Recognition of intervals and three-part sounds; notation of a
four-part homophonic chord progression; a singable, single line
melody dictation; a rhythm dictation.

Type of examination:
Intervals, three-voice sounds, a four-part homophonic succession of chords, a
singable, single line melody and rhythm will be played on the piano.
Analysis
a) with score: Analysis of an excerpt, for instance, a sonata-allegro form;
thematic sections and musical correlations are to be described;
harmonic presentation in steps or functions.
b) Listening analysis: An excerpt from the tonal repertoire will be
first played and then analysed according to
various aspects (meter, instrumentation, genre, epoch).
Type of examination:
The tasks in these parts will all be in writing, and in some cases,

5. The command of the German language is required in accordance with 37 Z 1 UniStG.


Language proficiency will be determined during the entrance exam by the examination
commission.
If it is not sufficient, then the examination commission will require evidence
which must be produced before inscribing for the third semester.

ADMISSIONS EXAM in CONDUCTING

The following information contains details of the admissions exam programme for the
ORCHESTRA CONDUCTING study branch:
All applicants must prepare the following works for the admissions exam:
1. Igor Stravinsky: "Marche Royale" from "LHistoire
du Soldat"
2. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony in A-Major, K. 201
Those applicants who have already completed the first segment of the course of study
leading to the diploma in Conducting or a Bachelors study programme and are applying for
the 2. course of study leading to a diploma in Conducting at the Mozarteum University must
prepare the following additional works:
1. Robert Schumann: Symphony Nr. 1 in B-flat Major
2. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Speaker Scene from "The Magic Flute"
Those applicants who can provide evidence of a completed diploma or Masters study
programme in Orchestra Conducting or an equivalent study degree and are applying for the
post-graduate University degree programme in Conducting (Orchestra), must prepare the
following additional works:
1. Johannes Brahms: Symphony Nr. 3, 1st movement
2. Igor Stravinsky: Suite from "The Firebird", 1919 version
Stravinsky "Marche Royale" (Ed. Chester Music, 1987) will be played by
a previously rehearsed ensemble. The work must be conducted to the end. All other works
are to be played on two pianos, four hands.

CHORAL CONDUCTING study branch:
All applicants must prepare the following works for the admissions exam:

2. Joseph Haydn: The Creation, Chorus Nr. 26 (Edition Peters)
Those applicants who have already completed the first segment of the course of study
leading to the diploma or Bachelors study programme in Choral Conducting and who are
applying to the 2nd segment of the the diploma study programme in Choral Conducting
must prepare the additional following works:
1. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Speaker Scene from "The Magic Flute"
2. Giacomo Puccini: "La Bohme, 2. Act (conducting and piano score)
Those applicants who can provide evidence of a completed diploma or Masters study
programme in Choral Conducting or an equivalent degree and are applying for the
postgraduate university degree programme in Conducting (Choir), must prepare the
following additional works:
1. Richard Wagner: The Flying Dutchman 3. Act (Conducting)
2. Giuseppe Verdi: Otello Introduction (Storm Scene) (playing the piano score)
Petrassi: Nonsense will be sung by a previously rehearsed ensemble. This must
be conducted to the end.
All other works are to be played on two pianos, four hands.
