Working while you go to college even when you have no choice about it isnt all bad. It is
a way of extending your education. In my family, if you want to go to college, you have to go out
and get a job. With seven kids, my parents dont have enough money to take care of foods and
bills, much less the expenses of a college students books, clothes and a steady girlfriend. I feel
morally responsible to help out and do my share.
This year I have a job as a counterman at Barskin Robbins, the ice cream store. My job
gives me the cash I need to be somewhat independent. I dont earn much, but it is enough for
pocket money. I can get a coke and a hamburger without feeling quietly. I can buy books for my
courses and I can go out with my girlfriend or buy her a present when I feel like it. Last night for
no reason, after I got paid, I bought Marjorie a bracelet and I saw one that I thought would look
nice on her. I dont make what you would call a living wage, but without it I would have to
live like a grind while I was in school. I dont think I could go on living without some money in
my pocket. Id probably quit school if I had no job. Im not the type who just studies, and I cant

Below is an excerpt of a story of a man who was trapped in a sunken ship.

My heart beat so loud I could hear it. I wanted to scream for help, pray, and kick- turn all this
into a nightmare from which I could awake. But it was no nightmare. Moreover, my plight was of
my own making. I had gone down improperly equipped- no safety line to guide me back, no
alternate air supply and, most important no diving companion. I tried to relax, because I knew the
more excited I got, the faster I would use up my air which was only good for only 25 minutes. I
am in good shape, I thought, so I should be able to stretch another 25 minutes out of this tank. But
what should I do? I had to probe deeper into the wreck and find an opening large enough to
escape through.

Brown Penny by William Butler Yeats
I WHISPERED, "I am too young,"
And then, "I am old enough";
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
"Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair."
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.

O love is the crooked thing,

There is nobody wise enough
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love
Till the stars had run away
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.
