Answer ALL questions.

PART A (10 2 = 20 marks)

Distinguish between gauge distance and pitch of the bolt.

2.

What are the merits and demerits of welded connection?

3.

Draw any two typical cross sections of tension member using angle
sections.

4.

What is block shear?

5.

Define effective length of a column.

6.

Draw a neat sketch of column with double lacing and mention the
specifications for lacing.

7.

What is laterally unsupported beam? Give an example.

8.

What is a plate girder? Where is it used?

9.

What are the loads to be considered for the design of gantry girder?

10.

Give general guidelines for fixing spacing of roof trusses.

PART B (5 16 = 80 marks)
(a)

Design a single bolted double cover butt joint to connect plates of Fy

410 grade having thickness 16 mm. Use M16 bolts of grade 4.6. Find
the efficiency of the joint.

(b)

A tie member of a roof truss consists of 2 ISA 90mm 60mm

10mm. The angles are connected on either side of 12 mm gusset
plate and the member is subjected to the pull of 400 kN. Design the
welded
connection.
(16)

(a)

Design a tension member to carry factored axial tension of 450 kN.

Use 10 mm thick gusset plate and 20 mm diameter black bolts. (16)
Or

(a)

What is a lug angle? Where is it used?

(5)

(ii)

Design a splice to connect a 300mm 20mm plate with

300mm 10 mm plate to carry design load of 500 kN. Use 20
mm black bolts.
(11)

Design a column with double lacing system to carry a factored axial

load of 1800 kN. The effective height of column is 4.5 m. Use two
channels placed back to back.

(a)

Design a simply supported beam of effective span 10m to carry

factored load of 60kN/m, the depth of the beam is restricted to
500mm. Assume the beam is laterally unsupported.

(16)

14.

Design a gusseted base to carry a factored axial load of 2800kN.

The column consists of ISHB 450 @0.855 kN/m with two cover plates
250 mm 20mm on either side. Take the effective height of column
as 4m.

(a)

Design a channel section purlin for the following data.

(16)

Spacing of trusses = 4 m
Spacing of purlins = 2 m
Live load on galvanized iron roofing sheets = 0.6 kN/m2
Slope of Main Rafter = 30 degrees

Wind load = 1.5 kN/m2

Determine the basic wind intensity for an industrial building situated

in Chennai using the following data :
Life of the structure = 50 years
Terrain category = 2
Size of building = 20m 40m
Height of eye board = 10 m
Topography: slope <3 degrees
