Notes:

1. Motor starting kVA adds directly for each generator on the bus. With Generacs PowerManager Digital Control Platform, the load is
shared proportionally.
2. Maximum distance between generator sets is determined by the voltage drop of the power conductors and the maximum distance
allowed for the RS485 connection. If the distance between units exceeds 500 feet, consult your Generac representative for wire and
communication recommendations.
3. Fuel consumption like motor starting kVA is additive. Each generator will proportionally share the load and the fuel consumption will be
based on the percentage of load shared.
4. A complete MPS system requires a PowerManager Paralleling Controller (PM-PC), a PowerManager System Controller (PM-SC),
and switch(es) from Generac Power Systems GTS line of digitally controlled transfer switches. In addition, Generac Power Systems
Genlink Communications Software provides remote monitoring and user interface with the Power Manager Digital Control Platform.
5. Values given are maximum temperatures to which power adjustment factors can be applied. Consult your Generac representative if
operating conditions exceed these maximums.
6. Consult Factory for high altitude cooling options.

OPERATION SEQUENCE FOR MPS

Power up sequence with single or multiple transfer

switches.
1. Utility fail or brownout occurs.
2. Transfer switch sends a signal via a two-wire start to the PM-SC.
3. The PM-SC the n sends a signal to each generator telling it to begin
the start sequence.
4. The Generator Controller on each genset will monitor power up frequency
and voltage. When the first generator reaches rated frequency and
voltage, the PM-PC will close the generator contactor to the bus. The
bus is now live.
5. The PM SC will monitor the rest of the generators and sequence them
to the bus as they reach their rated parameters. The PM-PC monitors
phase sequence, voltage and frequency and then determines when the
contactor closes, but the PM-SC provides an interrupt to sequence the
gensets and prevent two generators from closing at the same time.
6. When the appropriate number of gensets assigned to each transfer
switch are up and closed on the bus, the PM-SC then allows that transfer
switch to switch to the Emergency position.

7. If one generator does not start, programmable load shed contacts

will open or prevent a switch from closing, which will reduce the load,
then allow selected transfer switches to transfer to the emergency
position with the available generators.
8. If emergency power is required within 10 seconds, a separate
transfer switch for the critical loads is installed and powered from
the main bus. As soon as the bus is live, the transfer switch will
transfer and pick up the critical loads.
9. If a single genset is taken off line, the load shed contacts will drop
a pre-programmed load and keep the remaining loads alive.
10. When Utility returns, the PM-SC will transfer the load back to the
Utility side and then give disconnect commands to the generators
and after a cool-down period will give a shutdown command to all
generators.

PM-SC in NEMA 1 Enclosure

Controller Description
The PM-SC can coordinate up to fifteen MPS generators
and fully supports generators of different power outputs
(load is shared proportionate to generator size). The
System Controller also supports single and multiple
transfer configurations. The transfer switches can be from
any manufacturer provided they utilize a standard twowire start. The PM-SC supports load sequencing through
three permissive and three load-shed steps which can
be used to sequence numerous load circuits.

The Power Manager System Controller (PM-SC) is

a digital control box that acts as the master system
coordinator for Generacs Modular Power System (MPS).
The System Controller provides a single point of remote
communication to the system, facilitates the starting and
stopping of the generators, helps fine-tune the generator
load balancing, and manages priority loading and load
shedding. The System Controller utilizes an RS485 data
highway to communicate with each generator controller.
The generator controller on each unit controls all generator
operation including synchronizing and the primary load
balancing functions. The role of the System Controller
is simply to facilitate normal system sequencing and
data gathering.

The PM-SC is mounted in a NEMA 1 or NEMA 3R

wall-mounted enclosure and can be located anywhere
within 3000 feet of the generators, though it is often
most convenient to locate it with the transfer switch
equipment.

After gathering information from each of the generator

controllers the PM-SC can easily provide generator
information upstream to a building management system
or to Generacs Genlink operator interface software
provided with the equipment. The System Controller
supports multiple communication ports utilizing Modbus
protocol as well as a built-in modem.

The PM-SC:
Accepts a 2-wire start signal from multiple ATSs
Starts and stops generators via RS485
Fine-tunes the real and reactive generator load sharing
via RS485
Priority loads the system (3 levels)
Load sheds during generator failure (3 levels)
Central point of communication & control
RS232, RS485, and Modem
Modbus Protocol & GenLink Interface Software
Supports a system level remote annunciator and
common alarm output
Supports backup modes of operation
Human interaction (standard)
Redundant controls (optional)

Normal Sequence of Operation

1. The automatic transfer switches (ATSs) monitor the
utility voltage and provides a 2 wire generator start
contact to the PM-SC.
2. T
he PM-SC then provides a start command to all
generators via RS485 communications.
3. Each generator will start independently.
4. The first generator that attains rated voltage and
frequency performs dead bus arbitration with the
PM-SC and then closes its internal paralleling switch
connecting to the generator bus.
5. If an emergency system load requiring a 10 second
start exists, the first unit to close onto the generator
bus will typically pick-up the emergency ATS
immediately.
6. D
uring this time, the PM-SC inhibits the transfer of
the other ATSs via permissive relays.
7. The remaining generators will sync with the
generator bus and close their individual paralleling
switches.
8. As the generators are paralleled to the generator
bus, the PM-SC sequentially signals the remaining
ATSs to transfer onto the generator bus.
9. If a generator fails, load shed contacts are available
to disconnect selected loads. Load shedding can
be implemented at the transfer switches, with shunt
trip breakers, through building automation, and by
various other methods.

Optional & Backup Functionality

The MPS product line is designed to support operation
even if a failure occurs to the PM-SC or to the RS485
data highway. Standard back-up mode allows human
intervention to manually bring the generators online utilizing the capabilities built into the generator
controllers. Load is then sequenced manually by
actuating manual push buttons inside the System
Controller. An optional redundant load sequencing
controller is available for sites which desire fully
automatic backup operation.
In addition to basic functionality, the PM-SC is designed
to fully integrate with Generacs MTS digital transfer
switches or Generacs soft load transfer switch controller.
The System Controller also supports integration of
other optional functionality like generator capacity
management and site-specific custom logic.

10. When utility supply returns, the ATSs remove the 2

wire start causing the PM-SC to issue a command
to each generator control to disconnect from the
generator bus.
11. Each generator will operate for the cool-down period
and then shutdown.

37

PM-PLS

Automatic Backup Operation

The Modular Power System normally is in an operational ready status with all key switches in the auto position and all generators communicating to the
system controller. If the systems communications are disrupted, an alarm is generated and the PM-PLS is activated. Once activated the PM-PLS takes over
the system controllers load sequencing functionality through a hardwire status contact from each generator. The redundant mode, operational sequence is as
follows:
When the utility fails, the transfer switch(es) will provide a 2-wire start to the system controller and a redundant start to each of the generators. The
generators will all start automatically.
Generators 1 and 2 will perform dead bus arbitration through a hardwired handshake line and then one of the generators will safely energize the dead bus.
All remaining units will then actively synchronize (functionality internal to each generator) to the energized bus.
The PM-PLS receives hardwired on-line status from each generator. It uses this information to manage system permissive and load shed functionality.
While system communications are lost, generator load-sharing is maintained through functionality internal to the generator controllers.
For more details on the operation of permissive and load shed signals, please refer to the Power Manger System Controller manual, part # 0F1076.

Breaker Selection Guidelines

Volts - When a Standard Breaker is selected, use the breaker with the lowest volt rating that meets
or exceeds the generator output voltage. For example, a standard 15A breaker on a 120/208V
generator set will be a 0D5545, which has a 480V rating. A standard 50A breaker on a 120/208V
generator set will be 0D5539, which has a 240V rating.
Optional breakers are rated at 600V.
Accessories - Match the accessory's voltage with the genset electrical system voltage. The
electrical system voltage can be found on page 2 of each product's specification sheet.
Note: All MPS products are equipped with the shunt trip and aux contacts accessory for use in load
shedding. Since the shunt trip is not available for customer use, this accessory is not displayed as
a feature on the quote or order's bill of material.

Safe, Accurate Charging

The Generac 12 and 24 volt battery

charging systems are designed to
provide the ultimate in automatic
battery voltage maintenance.

Our automatic equalizer system uses

a control circuit to limit charging
current to 10 amps. maximum
battery charge is 2.30 volts per cell,
or 13.8 volts for a 12 volt battery and
27.6 volts for a 24 volt battery.

When the battery reaches maximum

charge, this high-performance charger
switches to its equalize mode.
Charging current is allowed to taper
off. At 2 amps, the charger shifts to
float mode. Just enough current is
supplied to maintain the battery at or
above 13 (or 26) volts.

The key is a switch-mode power

supply system with automatic float
and equalizer control. Precise
monitoring of the battey's voltage
automatically activates the correct
charging mode. The charge rate is
limited and controlled to efficiently
and safely maintain ideal battery
levels under varying conditions.

When battery voltage drops beyond a

pre-set level below its maximum
charge, charging current increases to
5 amps, then to the 10 amp bulk
charge rate if needed to reach
optimum levels.

51

Battery voltage must be above 11

(22) volts before charging begins, and
maximum open circuit voltage is 17.5
(35) volts. Charger and battery are
protected agains reverse connection.

INTRODUCTION
Genlink-DCP

has been developed alongside

Generac's latest control technology to give a more upto-date and feature-rich user experience. Generac
has incorporated such things as parameter file storage, variable trending, demo modes and a host of
other features. Genlink-DCP uses the industry standard Modbus protocol to communicate with
Generac's latest controllers and allows for local or
remote (via modem) communications. The package is
easy to install and user friendly with it's own online
context sensitive help system. It is recommended
using Genlink along with the user manual for the particular product purchased.

Prerequisites/MDAC_TYP.EXE
Follow the instructions. Rebooting shouldn't be necessary.

GENLINK
Install Genlink by double-clicking on the "Setup.exe"
file in the Genlink_Setup subdirectory.

ONLINE HELP
Genlink is being constantly improved with new features added on a regular basis. In order to keep the
documentation up to date, the main source of this
documentation is provided by the online help system.
This provides for context sensitive help on every
Genlink screen. This manual should only be viewed
as an introductory guide, the main source of documentation being from the online help system.

FEATURES

Context sensitive online help system

Uses industry standard Modbus protocol
Allows for local or remote (modem) connection
Runs in "Demo" mode offline
Allow product parameter uploading/storage in
files/copying and downloading

To access online help, either click on the "Help" button or use the "F1" key. This will bring up a help document which is displayed via explorer.

ADD NOTES FOR ONLINE HELP

Personal help notes can be created with just a few
simple keystrokes. Each help screen has it's own
individual help document which is stored in the
"\help" directory. Each help page has a link to an
associated "notes" document where notes can be
added. There is one "notes" file per help document
(i.e. one per page).
The easiest way to edit the notes files is to run
Genlink and bring up the help page that needs editing. Click on the "notes" link to bring up the notes file
for that page. Right click on the help text and select
"view source" to bring up the document in notepad.
An alternative is to edit the file in notepad (or an
HTML editor) without going through Genlink, but by
using explorer to find the files. These are stored
under the "\help" directory, under the directory where
Genlink was installed.

INSTALLING GENLINK
PREREQUISITES
Before Genlink .NET can be installed, two other components will need to be in place. The two requisite
files MUST BE LOADED FIRST before Genlink is
installed.
First, install the .NET Framework version 1.1. This is
available via Windows Update, or double-click on this
file:

Note that these files are in HTML format. By using the

HTML format, headings, colored text, etc. can be
used to enhance online notes.

Prerequisites/dotnetfx.exe
Follow the instructions presented, then be sure to
shutdown and restart the machine before going on to
the next steps.
