Lesson Plan for Heat transfer

I.

Objectives:
A. Given the available materials, the learners should be able to:
1. identify the three method of heat transfer;
2. differentiate the three method of heat transfer;
3. perform an activity about heat transfer;
4. develop and manifest the value of safety and consciousness; and
5. get 10 out of 15 on the test correctly.

II.

Subject Matter
A. Topic: Heat Transfer
B. Concepts/topics
1. The three method of heat transfer are conduction, convection, and radiation.
2. Conduction is the transfer of heat energy by molecular and electron collision
within a substance.
3. Convection is transfer of heat energy in gas or liquid by means of currents in
the heated fluid. The fluid moves, carrying energy with it.

Learning Task
Teachers Task
A. Routine Activity
1. Prayer

2. Greetings
Good morning!

Learners Task

One of the cleaners leads the

prayer.
Good morning, teacher! Were
glad to see you. Mabuhay!

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

Ok, please be seated.

3. Attendance
a. Class secretary, do we have any
absentee?

The class secretary stands up.

None, teacher. Everyone is
present.

4. Recall
Yesterday, we started our discussion
about heat. We differentiated heat and
temperature, we also introduced the
concept of heat transfer.
The teacher posts a picture of ice on a
hand on the board.
John, what can you infer about the
picture? What happens to the ice after
some time?

Sir, there is transfer of heat

from the hand to the ice. The
ice melt after some time. Since
there is difference in
temperature in the two.

Very good! Thank you.

In addition we also come up with the
idea that there should be temperature
difference to transfer heat. In that case
the hand is hotter than the ice.
This day, we will dig more to understand
fully the concept of heat transfer.
5. Motivation: Time to cook.
a. Imagine yourself as a cook, and your The students choose from the
Mom ask you to make a dish for her. set of words.
The teacher gives pieces of paper and
let the student write their answer and
post it on board.
What materials do you think the best
to use?

Answers may vary

B. Pre-activity
1. Definition of terms: Guess the word.
Before we go to our activity this
morning, there are some terms we need
to define, to further understand the
concept.

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

The teacher let the students guess the

words by posting clues in the class.

The students analyze the clue

on board.

Joseph, what do you think the first word?

Correct! Great Job

Sir, I guess it is Fluid.

Melanie, how about the second word?

Sir, it is current.

Then, Rose the last word is?

Sir, it is molecule.

Now class, use these words in a sentence.

a. Fluid - a substance whose molecules
flow freely, so that it has no fixed
shape and little resistance to outside
stress, e.g. a liquid or gas
b. Current - flow of water or air: a
steady flow of water or air in one
direction
c. Molecule - is a group of atoms that are
bound tightly together by strong
chemical bonds.
2. Discussing Activity Procedure
a. The teacher gives the laboratory
sheets and explain one by one the
procedures of the activity.
Ok class, do you have any questions
about the procedures?
C. Activity Proper
1. Performance of the activity
a. The class will be divided into six
groups and will make discussion and
analysis based on the given data in
the laboratory activity.

None Sir.

The students go to their

respective groups.

2. Data Gathering
a. The students will fill out the data
sheet provided and answer the guide
questions. (The teacher provides
manila paper for the presentation of
data afterward)

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

D. Post-activity Discussion
1. Analysis of data gathered

The students post their answer

on the board.

Conduction
a. What is the source of heat in the
activity?
How do you say so?

The source of heat in the

activity is the candles flame.
Since we mention that heat
flows from higher temperature
to lower temperature, and the
candle has higher temperature.

Great!
b. What happens to the wax ball as you
put the wire into the candle?
Does the wax ball fell all at once?
Ok then,
c. How does the heat get from the
source to the wax?

The wax ball melted as you

put the wire into the candle.
No Sir, it fell one by one.

The heat travel from the

source to the wax by the wire.

At the time you place the wire to the

candles fire. Does it makes the
molecule in the wire excite?

Yes Sir, since its temperature

rise.

Does it excite the molecule of the

wire all at once?

No Sir, it only excite the

molecule near the fire.

Ok now, what do you think happen

next?

It moves or collides to other

molecule to molecule.

Ok thats correct.
Now can you explain in the class how
heat transfer, base on your diagram?
Class do we need a direct contact in
this method?

Yes Sir, we need direct

contact to transfer heat in this
method.

This method conducts heat through

direct contact. What do you think is
this method called?

Conduction.

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

Convection
a. What happen to the hot colored water
inside to the small jar?

b. Where did the hot colored water

stay? Why?

How can you say it is less dense?

The hot colored water inside

to the small jar goes up as you
place it inside the big jar.
The hot colored water stayed
at the top layer of the big jar
since it is less dense than the
water in the big jar.
Since hot water is less dense
than cold water.

c. What took the place of the hot

colored water in the small jar?

The tap/cold water from the

big jar took place of the hot
colored water in the small jar.

d. How is heat transferred in the

activity?

Heat is transferred by the

circulation of fluid.

Do we need fluid in this method of

transfer?

Yes, the density difference of

the two fluid.

Explain the heat transfer base on the

diagram. That circulation of fluid is
called convection current.

A student explains how heat

transfers base on the diagram.

What, now, do you call this method?

Convection.

Radiation
a. How do you feel when you place
your hand above, beside and under
the source of heat?

b. Does your hand comes in contact

with the flame?

I feel the warm of the fire

when I place my hand above,
beside and under the source of
heat.
No Sir, my hand doesnt make
a direct contact with the flame.

c. What is in between your hand and the There is space between my

source of heat?
hand and the source of heat.
There is air molecule.
What if we remove the air molecule
in the space between your hand and

Yes.

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

the fire? Does heat transfer take

place?
d. How is heat transferred in this
activity?
.
Where does the heat come from?

Candle.

Fire.

What does the candle produce?

Yes.

Does fire gives light?

Yes.

So, can we say fire is light?

In our previous discussion about
light, what type of wave is light?

Electromagnetic wave.

Does it transfer energy (heat energy)? Yes.

So, this method radiate heat by
electromagnetic wave, it means heat
transfer is possible in this method
with or without a medium.

Heat transfer through space by

an electromagnetic waves.

Then, this method is name as?

Radiation.

2. Generalization
At the end of the presentations of the
six group, the teacher provides a one
fourth cartolina for each group.
Ok class, what have you learned
about the lesson? In your own word
define the method of heat transfer
that is assigned to your group.

One of the representatives of

each groups will present their
data in front of the class.
Additional information will
presented in the class.

The teacher presents the concept to

the class and compares it to the
students answers.
3. Values Integration
Class going back to our initial activity,
why did you choose the following
materials?

This allows us to save energy

and keep us safe.

Conduction, Convection, and Radiation, D.B.M.

The teacher presents again the set of

words chosen by the class.
How this things keep you safe?

(wooden spatula)
I choose this material because
it prevents heat to travel to my
hand, it keeps us safe from
burning.
(Apron)
Also Sir, the apron. This thing
prevents the radiation from the
open fire.

In what way you can save energy by

using this materials?

IV.

(aluminum pan)
Sir, example the aluminum
pan, since we know the
concept of conduction we can
use it to save energy. We can
cook food with less energy.

Assessment
In each of the following examples, identify whether heat is being transferred
through conduction, convection or radiation. Some may have two possible answers.
