Rectors Message
The establishment of Higher Education Commission (HEC) in
the year 2002 revolutionized the state of higher education in
Pakistan. Keeping in view the national scenario of expanding
higher education, Fauji Foundation, the mother organization
of the University felt a need to establish a first class degree
awarding institution in Islamabad. Thus the University was
established under a Federal Charter in October 2002.
Foundation University aspires to be among the leading
institutions of higher learning which contributes towards
development of the nation through excellence in education
and research.
A University is known for quality of its teaching, excellence
in research, transparency in governance and repute in
community relations. These are the pillars of the Foundation
University. Currently, the University has two campuses;
Foundation University Rawalpindi Campus (FURC) and
Foundation University Islamabad Campus (FUIC). With the award of W4 category by the Higher
Education Commission and the trend setting ISO certification under its belt, the FUI is poised to
take its rightful place among the institutions of higher learning.
FUI is at the forefront of endeavors in university-industry synergy. It is a matter of satisfaction and
also pride for the FUI to work with the industries of its parent organization, the Fauji Foundation.
Lately, the University has advanced in the direction of Academic Collaboration. Besides renowned
national Universities, the FUI has also signed memorandums of understanding with international
universities of repute in UK, Turkey and China.
FUI holds quality infrastructure to be a key contributor towards educational excellence. In this

of highly qualified faculty and the development of physical infrastructure which includes a purposebuilt academic block featuring air-conditioned lecture halls, a video conference room and wellequipped labs.
The University is adding to the repertoire of its programmes by offering education in dental
sciences. To this end a state of the art facility has been constructed at the Foundation University
Islamabad Campus thereby adding to the breadth of education in health sciences currently being
provided under the banner of Foundation University Medical College.
FUI is fully alive to the significance of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. It runs programmes
in the discipline of English, Education, Psychology, Media & Communication and Economics to
contribute to the humane aspect of the society.
The University is firmly committed to upgrade its systems to meet the demands of the modern
era. Its Smart Campus Endeavour has reached fruition and has made the University a truly

paperless environment and promote efficiency.
Apart from quality education, the FUI is also fully aware of the importance of sports and is making
dedicated endeavors to provide adequate opportunities to its students to participate in a variety
of indoor and outdoor games.
I would like to take this opportunity to assure our prospective students and their parents that
selecting the FUI for their education will prove to be a wise decision. I would also like to assure them
that the FUI, its faculty and staff will go all out to make their experience at the FUI remarkable,

Genesis
The Foundation University Islamabad is an
affiliated project of Fauji Foundation which is a
charitable trust for the welfare of ex-servicemen
of armed forces and their dependents. Its
corporate operations began in 1954, when the
Post War Services Reconstruction Fund (set up
earlier in British India in 1942) was reactivated.
Since then, operating as a self-supporting entity
in the private sector, it has been generating
financial resources to meet its welfare
obligations through its own industrial and commercial projects. Today, the Foundation extends
social welfare services to over 9 million beneficiaries i.e. 5% of countrys population. Being the
largest welfare and industrial group in the country with current assets worth Rs.229 billion and net
worth of over Rs.109 billion; around 80% of its annual earning is spent on welfare.
It successfully manages a large healthcare chain of 116 hospitals, medical centres and dispensaries,
100 schools/colleges, and 74 vocational/technical training centres. The Foundation successfully
meets all its continuously expanding welfare obligations across the country from resources generated
by it. The Foundations services in these areas are acknowledged as an indirect assistance to the
Government for bringing social uplift and improving the quality of life.

specialization track of three courses. The core

courses provide an advanced understanding
of theoretical and applied computer science,
which allows the students to begin exploring the
specialization areas. It prepares students for
advanced positions in industry and research.

The students
are assessed on the basis of
attendance, quizzes, assignments, projects,
presentations, oral and written examinations. The
students have to maintain 2.0 CGPA for bachelor
degrees, 2.70 CGPA for MS and 3.0 for PhD by
the end of the degree. The distribution of marks
is: Attendance = 05%, Sessional (Assignments,
Quizzes, Projects and Presentations) = 10% -15%,
Midterm Exam = 30% -35% and final term exam =
50% marks each.

Approved courses of 24 credits in the major

subject (600 level & above)
Deficiency courses may be below 600 level, but
these will neither be given numerical grades
nor counted towards CGPA and shall be given
letter grades P (pass) or F (fail)

Program Structure

Courses Requirements:
Core courses

The graduate program should embody sufficient

flexibility to fulfill the requirements of either an
academic degree (Breadth-Based) obtained in
preparation for further graduate study or a terminal
professional degree (Depth-Based). The discipline
of Computer Science has matured enough that the
distinction between academic and professional
programs is beginning to appear. However, the concept
of an utterly terminal program is not widely accepted
in the field. All Computer Science academic programs
should provide the possibility of additional study in the
field. The proposed program is intended to establish
an integrated breadth and depth based curriculum
model to assure that the common aspects of various
potential masters programs in Computer Science are
captured. The proposed curriculum structure may be
implemented within four-semester time. A project/
thesis work may be unified with students chosen depth
oriented specialties. Generally graduate programs
are structured with a common core of fundamental
material and wide range of options for the rest of the
course work.

hours), or

Degree Program referred to as MCS or MSc

BCS-3 years Degree Program-Student will be

required to complete the deficiency of difference
of total earned credit hours and 120 credit hours.

eligible but they have to cover deficiency.

Alhamdulillah due to the hard work of my teachers and
the learning experience that I had in this University.
Today Ive developed a very good industrial liaison that I believe will
help me in my future endeavors and I also believe in giving back to my
University by enrolling upcoming graduates in the professional market. So
that they can go out there and make a name for Foundation University. I
wish all of the new comers and currently enrolled students a very best of

Admission Criteria

Introduction

The requisites for admission to the MS English program

will be:

The MS English at FUI has been designed in accordance

with HEC guidelines. However, the program carves
a distinct niche for itself by offering courses that are
designed to challenge and stimulate the learners and to
provide a rich research-oriented educational experience.

MA English with at least 2.5 CGPA for semester

system, 1st division for annual system, 45% marks
for Punjab University graduates

Objectives

Passing the FUI entrance test and interview

GAT General score of at least 50%

The primary objective of the program is to create an

environment wherein students are trained to develop
criticality and reflection as they garner expertise in
different areas of their study. The program also aims
to train the students for research and to equip them
with the strategies, tools and the conceptual grounding
needed to transform them into researchers par
excellence.

Assessment
Assessment will be carried out through coursework,
assignments, presentations, research projects, research

The assessment will be based on the creativity,
argumentative quality, ideational clarity and ingenuity
of the work.Scholars will also have to appear in and
pass a comprehensive examination (regarding their
chosen area of research) to be held in Week 8 of the
third semester.

Streams of MS English: Literature and

Applied Linguistics
The MS English program at FUI is unique in that, unlike
similar programs at other universities, it offers students
the option to specialize in English Literature or Applied
Linguistics, which areas are vast domains of study in
their own right. Not only does this enable students
to opt for a stream that reflects their interests and
strengths but also does this allow faculty to tailor the
courses to the requirements of each stream rather than
to teach generic and diluted versions of the courses
as is the case in non-streamed MS English programs.
Concomitantly, streaming should also help to produce
research professionals who are field experts rather than
generalists, which aim is integral to quality research
programs at this advanced level.

Evaluation of the final dissertation will be carried out as

per the HEC rules.
