Without the large picots this design van look quite heavy. Candyfloss edging With lots of picots (top) the design has a light, fluffy appearance, while without the picots (below) it appears much heavier All plain rings (A) ~ (6ds, p) x3, 6ds All rings with picots (B) - 6ds, p, (2ds, P 0.Sem) x 5, 2ds, p, 6ds All chains ~ Sds except between picots where there are 4ds. 26 Working a corner ly one ring of the third pair of the corner motif. Join to the make the s of the next motif, Join thi the la: this motif and wor will find that this joins at A, already a previous join of two pieots. 27 © LOVE-IN-THE-MIST This pretty mat design interprets the blue flowers of lowe-in-the-mist, complete with heart motifs and a simple dewdrop edging tinged with pink as if by the rising sun. Romantic! The flower and heart motifs are worked as separate medallions that are joined together with the next row of tating. Love-in-the-mist mat This mat measures 11%in (29em) when worked in no. 20 cotton. Use a shuttle of white thread with a blue ball. 64 Row 1: Centre motif ‘Small ring~ Sds, p(J), Sds, el. Secure and cut threads at the base of first large ring, Row 3: Flower medallions Note that row 3 is made before row 2. ‘This row is formed of a series of 9 flower medallions. Use white shuttle thread with a blue ball. For P, use Smm picot measure; p is very small for joins. Ring - Ids, [P, P, p] x5, P,P ol. Chain ~ Sds, p(J), 3ds, [P, 2ds] x7, Ids, p, Sds, J to p on centre ring. Repeat to make 6 petals. Secure ends and cut threads. Yan (Smm) © CORNFLOWER These designs contain the flowers that used to be found ina field of corn in the UK. The cow parsley, clovers and daisies are surrounded by the golden heads of corn. Cornflower mat ‘The finished mat measures 12in (30cm) when worked in no. 20 cotton. Row 1: Centre motif Use 2 shuttles with white thread on both. Tip Some tatters may find it useful to mark their shuttles A and B. Shuttle B, which is used as the bal ‘thread for the chains, is used to work the rings of the inner circle, ‘thus enabling the finished work to lie flat. In this central motif, all rings are the same: [3ds,p] x 3, 3ds, with chains of ds between each, Following the chart, work ring 1, rw. Chain, rw. Ring 2, rw. Chain, do not rw. Ring 3, do not rw. Keep leaf under thumb to work next chain. Achain - 10ds, rw. Repeat these flowers and leaves Aring —Sds, J to adjacent ring, Sds, around the mat, taking care to join , Sds, rw. the last leaf to the first before tying Achain - 15ds, rw. ends off at the base of the first flower. Row 3: Daisy medallion Use shuttle only filled with white thread, Ring ~ Sds, p [10ds, p] x 2, Sds, el Make 5 petals, joining first and last Picots. Ring 6 ~Sds, J, 10ds, J to Sth p of clover flower, 10ds, p, 5ds, el. Ring 7 —Sds, J, 10ds, J between 2 small rings, 10ds, p, Sds, el. Ring 8 ~5ds, J, 10ds, J to Sth p of next clover flower, 10ds, J to Ist petal, Sds, ol. Finish off. Make 8 daisies, joining them to clover row. 7s
