ASSIGNMENT
1) i ) For coplanar force system prove that The algebraic sum of the moments of all the
forces about any point is equal to the moment of their resultant force about the
same point
ii) Derive equation of centroid for a triangular lamina from its base.
2)Two traffic signals are temporarily suspended from a cable as shown in Fig- 3.
Knowing that signal B weighs 300 N , determine the weight of the signal at C
3)A boat is pulled along the river by two ropes with pulls P & Q inclined at 30 and 40
to the x-axis as shown in Fig -4. Find a) P and Q if their resultant R is 1000 N , parallel
to x-axis b ) If P is inclined at 30 to x-axis find the minimum value of Q if R is same.
4) A 100 N force acts as shown in Fig- 9 on a 300 N block placed on an inclined plane.
The static and kinetic coefficients of friction between the block and the plane are 0.25
and 0.20 respectively. Determine whether the block is in equilibrium, and find the
value of the friction force.
5)A system of forces is made of two forces of equal magnitude.Determine, using the triangle law of forces, the
angle between twoforces if magnitude of resultant force is equal to the magnitude of oneof the forces.
13) Define: (i) Coefficient of friction (ii) Angle of friction (iii) Stress
14) Refer figure 9. The coefficient of frictions between the block and the
inclined plane is 0.2. Determine the least value of the force P required just to
move the block up along the inclined plane.
15) A uniform ladder of weight 250N and length 5m is placed against a vertical
wall in a position where its inclination to the vertical is 30o. A person
weighing 700N climbs the ladder. At what position of the person the ladder
will start to slip? Take coefficient of friction = 0.2 at both the contact
surfaces of the ladder.
16) The following forces are acting at a point, find the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force.
1. 550N acting towards North
2. 900N acting at 40 towards South of West
3. 1.25 kN acting at 60 towards South of East
4. 400N acting from West to East
17)Determine support reactions for the beam loaded as shown in fig.1.
18) Determine the resultant and locate the same with respect to point A
of a non-concurrent force system shown in fig.
24) Determine the magnitude direction and position of resultant force of the
force system given in fig with reference to point A.
25)Draw shear force and bending moment diagram for the beam shown in
Fig.
27) The forces acting on a regular hexagon of side a are shown in Fig. Determine the
resultant moment of the system.
28)A bar ABC is loaded as shown in Fig, in which portion AB is of uniform section
and portion BC is of tapering section. Calculate the value of load P so that the total
deformation is 0.3mm. Neglect the deformation due to self weight. Calculate the
change in volume of portion AB. Take E= 110 GPa and 1/m=0.25
30) Derive the relation between modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity
31) What are principal planes and principal stresses?
32) A circular rod of 25 mm diameter and 500 mm long is subjected to a
tensile force of 50 kN. Determine modulus of rigidity, bulk modulus and
change in volume if Poissons ratio = 0.3 and Youngs modulus E = 2
105 N/mm2.
33) A steel rod of 30mm diameter is placed inside a copper tube of external
diameter 50mm and internal diameter 40mm, having length equal to 500mm
and connected rigidly at the ends as shown in figure 10. The bar is
subjected to axial pull of 150kN. Find the stresses in each material and
elongation of the composite bar. Take Esteel = 200 GPa and Ecopper = 100GPa.
