Stage 3 Learning Plan

Instructional Strategies For This Lesson
Consider learning styles, multiple intelligences, learner abilities and student interests.
1.

Activating

1. Ask the students what they know about

addition as this is the start of a new unit.
2. Create an addition web on chart paper
based on ideas listed as a class.
3. Include ideas and words like:
Grouping
Plus
Add
Sum
More Than
Altogether
Combined
Added To
Makes numbers bigger

2. Acquiring
1. Talk about carrying or regrouping as a class
and show what that looks like with an addition
question.
2. Write four math equations on the white board
for the students to copy in their math scribblers.
Increase the level of difficulty with each question.
3. Have students answer the questions on the
whiteboard. Students must show their work and
describe to the class how they got their answer.
4. Play an addition game called Save the
Apples on the SMART Board. Show the students
a question and have them solve it individually
using their math scribblers. When a student
thinks they have the right answer, they can raise
their hand and come answer it on the SMART
Board. The object of the game is to get the
answer right in order to safely get all the apples
across the river away from the hungry alligator.

3. Applying
1. Write a To Do list on the whiteboard for
all the students to see.
2. Students will have three addition
worksheets to complete:
1. I Can Add Regrouping Worksheet
2. Secret Message Worksheet
3. Halloween Addition Coloring Sheet
*Bonus: If students finish all three sheets,
they can play a partner dice games or the
math quilt addition game I created.

4. What about students who require

adaptation to the lesson?
IEP Student and students who struggle with
math:
1. Spend extra time explaining directions to these
students. I will make sure each of these students
fully understand the instructions as they are
working on each worksheet.
2. Encourage the students to try their best in an
effort to support each student.
3. Bring any students that are having difficulty
over to the side table and work through the
worksheets with them as a group.
