General Medicine Advanced Training
Introduction
Opportunities for Advanced Training in General and Acute Care Medicine have increased significantly over the last 3 years.
The Internal Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand (IMSANZ) has prepared this section of the training supplement
to make it easier for trainees to see where the training opportunities are and who to contact to find out further information.
The diversity of the positions available reflects the need for training general physicians to work in a variety of settings.
Trainees are encouraged to seek advice when planning their training program so that the SAC training requirements are met
and all aspects of the curriculum covered.
We strongly encourage trainees to consider dual training. You will note many positions offer this opportunity.
Information about the SAC requirements can be found on the college website. Please do not hesitate to contact the SAC
in general medicine if you require further guidance. Your local member of the SAC can be contacted by writing to the
secretariat at GeneralMedicineAdvanced@racp.edu.au
Members of IMSANZ Council can also provide training and career advice and may be contacted via IMSANZ@racp.edu.au.

Registrars intending to sit the FRACP exam will find a comprehensive and coordinated training programme, with weekly
exam-focussed tutorials and guidance from both senior registrars and consultants. A mock written and clinical exam is
organised, along with weekly short case teaching and a long case.
Wellington and Hutt hospitals have a consistent record of exam success, and a very high pass rate for the written
examination. There are options for job-sharing and part-time training to facilitate and support exam preparation.
Training costs associated with the examination are met by the hospital, and include books and exam preparation courses, if
the trainee wishes to attend.
Advanced Trainees
Advanced training in subspecialties is available in: Allergy and Immunology; Respiratory & Sleep Medicine (including a
dedicated Sleep Medicine registrar); Cardiology; Gastroenterology; Rheumatology; Medical Oncology; Clinical & Laboratory
Haematology; Intensive Care; Nephrology; Infections Diseases and Microbiology; Neurology; Palliative Care; Endocrinology
and Chemical Pathology; Clinical Genetics and Geriatrics.
The General Medical service has four dedicated advanced training positions which allow the trainee to choose any
combination of subspecialty clinics to combine with acute ward-based general medicine, supported by a basic trainee
medical registrar and house officers. Time is available for research and audit activity. The hospitals have a strong relationship
with the University of Otago, and trainees also provide teaching for medical students and junior doctors.
All trainees are strongly encouraged to attend relevant conferences and courses, and leave is provided for this purpose.
General
Social activities are organised by trainees, including social sports teams; consultant vs. junior staff matches; regular dinners
and social evenings. There is a director of physician training at both Wellington and Hutt hospitals, and chief residents
at Wellington and Hutt hospitals. They liaise with management about training issues and clinical care, which means a
responsive and adaptable environment is fostered within the hospitals.
