Super Clubs Day

Super Clubs Day is a day when all Shidler Inter-Business Council

clubs come together and participate in a friendly all-day competition
with each other in a number of events and games. This semester,
Super Clubs Day was held on Sunday, November 9. There were a
number of new
events and the
crowd-favorites
for students to
participate in this
semester,
including capture
the flag,
volleyball, cheer
and dance, relay,
dodge ball, brain bowl, and mini
competitions throughout the day. Each
club had its own captain for each of the events. More often than not, these captains were
executive board members. To lead SHRMs members, Alec Catalan, Kent Shinomae, Scott
Nguyen, Sheina Baybayan, and Jessica Higashi stepped up to the plate.

SHRMies played hard and showed their club spirit like never before, and received first place in
brain bowl and cheer and dance and fourth place in volleyball, resulting in fourth place overall.
Our members had a ton of fun competing, but the greatest reward was all of the new friends
and memories they made at the event.

and insights from the many successful
business men and women who attended.
The SHRM Aloha Student Chapter would
like to extend its deepest thanks to SHRM
Hawaii, Xerox Hawaii, Starwood Hotels
and Resorts, and all businesses and
professionals who generously donated to

SENIORS!

EXECUTIVE BOARD

Our final event for the Fall 2014 semester was

the SHRM Aloha Banquet. It was a semi-formal
event that allowed the club to recognize our active
members and celebrate the new friends and
memories the students have made with each other.
Along with the amazing food catered by Regal
Bakery, our very own Director of Finance, Kent
Shinomae, treated SHRMies with a special dance
and magic show. He wowed the crowd in every
way and everyone was impressed!
The HOSS elections winners, determined by
their fellow SHRMies were also announced at the
Aloha Banquet. Among these awards were "Mr.
Cutie," Social Butterfly, and "Most Likely to
Succeed".
Our very own President, Sheina Baybayan, gave
a heartfelt speech, recognizing each member of the
executive board and handed out an award for all of
the SHRMies that made active status. The Aloha
Chapters graduating seniors were also given an
opportunity to make a speech to their colleagues.
This was such a memorable semester, and we look
forward to seeing you all again next semester!

THANKS FOR A GREAT SEMESTER!

COMMUNITY
SERVICES
TOUR DE CURE
In November, SHRMies worked
together to help set up for Tour de Cure.
Members were in charge of checking
tents and coolers to ensure they work
properly, set up banners and signs, and
write inspirational messages to finishers
on the asphalt. It was wonderful to see
members working together to help the
community.

MAYORS
CRAFT FAIR
For the final community service of the
semester, members assisted the
Honolulu Lions Club in setting up the
Mayors Craft Fair.
Members had the task of moving
heavy boxes and items so the elderly
vendors could focus on organizing and
putting out their items. The vendors
were very friendly and gave the
SHRMies many tips on creating and
selling their art.
The Aloha Chapter is looking
forward to more opportunities to assist
the Lions Club in their endeavors.

[ Company Tour ]

Company tours are opportunities to gain

insight about exceptional businesses in
Hawaii. Members will see behind the scenes
and learn about the corporate culture and
how facilities are run in the company, as well
as, the role they plays in the Hawaiis
community. Members will learn the different
areas and positions in the company and find
out what the company looks for in job
candidates.

WORKSHOPS

Public Speaking & Networking

Public speakingthe two words we all
cringe to hear. SHRMies were given the
opportunity to learn from Alan Tin,
Human Resources Development Director
at
Myanmar
Marketing
Research
Development and an award winning
business instructor from Heald College,
who gave the members invaluable tips to
be a better public speaker. Mr. Tins sense
of humor made members feel comfortable
talking about this area that not many of us
are confident in.

We thank Professor Alan Tin for taking

time out of his busy schedule to come help
the SHRMies out! A big shout out to our
Director of Professional Development,
Arik Ma, for connecting with Mr. Tin and
setting up this great workshop for us!

School-to-Workforce
The transition from school to the workforce can be
tough for many seniors. That's why we
decided to have a workshop that provides
our seniors a guide on how to pave the
path to success after graduation.
The instructor for the night was
Stevette Santiago of Hawaii USA FCU.
She shared her stories with the members
and provided them with resources
detailing characteristics employers look
for in new talent.
This workshop was not only helpful for
our graduating seniors, but it contained
information applicable to all aspects of our
every day lives. Thank you Stevette for all
of your help! It was a great workshop that
everyone enjoyed.

COMPANY
TOURS
Company tours allows SHRMies to
see the culture of company and
whether that industry is the right fit
for them. They allow our members to
learn from and exchange contact
information and network with local
business professionals. Members gain
invaluable insights, and professionals
are able to utilize members fresh new
ideas and perspectives.
Our last two tours were hosted by
Xerox Hawaii and Starwood Hotels and

Resorts. Each company had its own unique

culture and members were
fascinated to see how different
each companys atmosphere
and people are.
We are so grateful for the
opportunities both of these
amazing companies have
provided for our members to
gain insights and knowledge to
prepare for the business
community.

SHRM WELLNESS TIPS

Healthy Studying
College Advice Blog

1. Don't Skip Meals

Although you may have a busy schedule, you should always take breaks
for regular, healthy meals. Not only will these meals give you energy
and nutrition but they can provide much-needed breaks that will allow
you to refresh your body and mind before jumping back into the books.

2. Drink Water
Caffeine is a diuretic, which means youll be taking more bathroom
breaks than normal. Downing high amounts of these drinks can also lead
to lack of sleep, which makes it even harder to study later on. Water is
the best solution. It replenishes and hydrates with no side effects.

3. Get Sleep
When you are rested, your mind is better able to process and retain
information. In addition, sleeping gives your mind a chance to process
all the information its been taking in and save it for long-term retention.
A solid evening of studying, followed by a good nights sleep, will put
you in better shape for a morning test than will an all-nighter.

4. Avoid Alcohol
Drinking alcohol while studying can be extremely detrimental to
information retention. It can also make you groggy and sleepy.

5. Eat Healthy Snacks

Eat brain food like sliced carrots, fresh fruits, or mixed nuts. Eating
healthy snacks can keep you focused on getting an A rather than
gaining the freshman fifteen.

6. Pace Yourself and Take Breaks

One of the most important pieces of advice you can take is to pace your
studying throughout the day or week. Dont pull all-nighters that will
leave you tired and unfocused at test time. And, when you study, get up
once every hour or so to stretch your legs, go to the bathroom, take a
quick jog, or eat. These little breaks give your mind and body a chance
to refresh and energize for the next session.
