CERAMIC TILE FLOOR FINISH (MORTAR BED SET)


PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1

SECTION INCLUDES
A. Ceramic tile floor finish using the full bed mortar application method.

SUBMITTALS
A. Submit product data under provisions of Section 01330.
B. Submit product data indicating material specifications, characteristics, and
instructions for using adhesives and grouts.
C. Submit samples under provisions of Section 01330.
D. Submit manufacturer's installation instructions under provisions of Section
01330.
E. Submit manufacturer's certificate under provisions that products meet or
exceed specified requirements ANSI/TCA A137.1.
F. Submit maintenance data under provisions of Section 01700.
G. Include recommended cleaning and stain removal methods, cleaning
materials, and polishes and waxes.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Conform to ANSI/TCA A137.1

1.6

QUALIFICATIONS
A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in the manufacture of products specified
in this Section with minimum five years documented experience.
B. Installer: Company specializing in applying the work of this Section with
minimum 5 years documented experience and approved by product
manufacturer.

1.7

PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE
A. Convene one week prior to commencing work of this Section, under
provisions of Section 01200.

1.8

DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING


A. Deliver products to site under provisions of Section 01600.
B. Store and protect products under provisions of Section 01600.
C. Protect adhesives from freezing or overheating in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions.

1.9

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
A. Do not install adhesives in a closed, unventilated environment.
B. Maintain 50 degrees F during installation of mortar materials.

2.2

TILE MATERIALS
A. Floor tile (T1): Emser Tile; Pietra del Nord through bodied porcelain tile;
12x12; color as scheduled.

2.3

ADHESIVE MATERIALS
A. Dry Set Portland Cement Mortars: ANSI, A118.1

MANUFACTURERS - MORTAR AND GROUT


A. Upco Company - Product Hydroment.
B. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section 01600.

2.5

MORTAR MATERIALS
A. Mortar Materials: ANSI/TCA A118.1, ANSI/TCA A118.3.

2.6

GROUT MATERIALS
A. Grouting for tile: ANSI 118.3; Hydroment, or equal, colors as selected.

2.7

ACCESSORIES
A. Metal Edging: Schluter Systems "Schluter Trims", as detailed, color & finish
as selected.

2.8

MORTAR MIX AND GROUT MIX


A. Mix and proportion cementitious materials for site made slurry coat, mortar
bed and bond coat.
B. Mix and proportion pre-mix setting bed and grout materials in accordance
with manufacturers instructions. ANSI/TCA A108.3, ANSI/TCA A118.1.

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1

EXAMINATION
A. Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work.
B. Beginning of installation means installer accepts condition of existing
surfaces and substrate.

3.2

PREPARATION
A. Protect surrounding work from damage or disfiguration.
B. Vacuum clean surfaces, substrate and damp clean.

C. Level existing substrate surfaces to acceptable flatness tolerances.


3.3

INSTALLATION - FULL MORTAR BED METHOD


A. Install mortar bed, tile, and grout in accordance with manufacturer's
instructions and TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation: Installation
Method F112-03.
B. Apply mortar bed over membrane surfaces to conform to dimensions
indicated on drawings. Slope mortar bed to floor drains.
C. Do not interrupt tile pattern through openings.
D. Cut and fit tile tight to penetrations through tile. Form corners and bases
neatly. Align floor, base, and wall joints.
E. Tile joint: 1/16 width.
F. Place tile joints uniform in width, subject to variance in tolerance allowed in
tile size. Make joints watertight without voids, cracks, excess mortar, or
excess grout.
G. Sound tile after setting. Replace hollow sounding units.
H. Keep expansion control joints free of mortar or grout. Apply sealant to joints.
I.

Allow tile to set for a minimum of 72 hours prior to and after grouting.

J.

Grout tile joints.

K. Apply sealant to junction of tile and dissimilar materials and junction of


dissimilar planes.
L. Coordinate tile layout with floor drain locations in Womens Restroom (115),
Mens Restroom (111) and Staff Restroom (106) to avoid cut tiles between
floor drain locations.
3.4

CLEANING
A. Clean work under provisions of 01700.
B. Clean tile surfaces.

3.5

PROTECTION
A. Protect finished installation under provisions of Section 01500.
B. Do not permit traffic over finished floor surface.
