GERALD D. BOWLIN,

1Q62 - -NEl" YEAR'S GREETINGS- - 1Q62

MRS. GENEVA S. BOWLIN,

iNJiv, iiJaa o

A new year is here and by way of SEASONS GREETINGS to each of you we announce a
new addition to our family:
ELIZABETH JEAN

Born: Nov. 6; 3:10 P.M.

Black hair, brown eyes and atomic age energy. Seven pounds of pleasure for each
of the other members of the Gerald D. Bowlin family.

1961 has brought joysas well as sorrows... January found us treating burns,
delivering babies, (Boni and Lola had a baby girl that only lived I6 hours in spite
of all we and the Doctors could do. She was laid to rest near their little boy
who lived a shorter time only Ik months earlier.)
I spent almost three weeks (in rain) sorting and moving the "Bowlin Store"(used

clothing) in Nogales from a rented house to one Ed Tinker (Our Forwarding Agent's
husband) built for us so we'd not be out rent! Wonderful people the Tinkers.
Gerry spent that time taking care of our four kids plus 13 year old Leanor,(who

had been with us since the beginning of schoolT^,""running the house, office, Mission
and listening to problems of neighbors and friends here in Hermosillo and doing a
little "Back Yard Clinic" work tossed in! We aren't old enoughaccording to
Mexican customs to be "patron and patrona" but seems like we are doing such work
regardless of age.

February found us busy as usual: Gerry keeping things under control and me helping
Dr. Storktwo babies, both boys, three days apart.

One child .^7 for Leanor's

mother. The other child ^3 is the second one I have delivered in the
family.
Bulletin writing takes hours of Gerry's time and energy and he puts it off until
the last minute, then dedicates all his time for about a week to just that!

In March, Lola received word that her elderly aunt has passed away and she was to

go get her Ik year old daughter, Lourdes, who had been raised by the aunt.

I deci

ded to go with her, to visit Guanajuato in Central Mexico, and to get the girl here
in the shortest time possible and with the least expense. We went by bus and came

home by second class train,

'"e were gone 8 days and had a wonderful trip.

Again

Gerry was left "baby sitting". (The babies are quiet large, however.)

A milestone in office work was trading our old "seris 1, r/- 13" A B Dick mimeograph
for a new Gest_ejtner silk screen process duplicatori truly a dream come trxe as well

a muGirrTeed'ed piece ui-equipment. If I ever really learn how to operate it,

you'll get good looking letters, etc. I still get ink all over me, but it is fun
learning.

Now^ajl _I^ need is a used _ej^|,qjtr_ic_ tvnfwr-i t^r to cut stencils, (prefer

ably one that is well educated in spelling!) then I'll have no excuse for weak
spots, letters that don't print and maybe even be able to do av/ay with the correct

ion fluid--if it can spell!!! (This machine is loaned to me while my old one is
being repaired).

On March 25th I delivered little Geneva (Veva) for a neighbor girl whose "so called"
husband left her when she was 5 months pregnant. Soon Veva v/as staying at our house
all day, because it was cooler than her house, then all night too (same reason) and
now she stays because it is too cold at her house. So we have her day and night.
She is now beginning to try to talk, she calls Gerry "daddy" and me "mama" and her
mother, Rosalva, she calls "Saba."

April and Easterwe held an all city Sunrise Service on a rock hill near our

newest "Church", La Triguera (Flour Mill) on the Nogales Highway. A new and imp
ressive service for Mexico, one we plan to repeat yearly. The sunrise was beautiful
over Lake Rodriguez.

Roof was poured on the four room boys' dorm--cement is carried up in square 5
gallon cans on men's sholders. The workers remind one of ants, so many working so
fast,
''fe North Americans think we have to have machinery for everything, Mexico
teaches us something nev; daily.

Gerry had to go to Nogales, a job he dislikes very much, and one he sends me to do
if at all possible. He went to take a trial run in his new--to him'59 V.W.
before he left on a longer trip to Calif, and the P.B.S. Gospel'and Missionary
Convention. He spent almost two months awayspeaking in the Churches before and
after the convention.

'7e have been on the mission field 15 yearswith no furlough,

so have to dash out now and then to "repair fences."

While Gerry was gone, I re-arranged furniture to make room for a baby to be born

at our house, an un-married girl whose family had kicked her out (common in Mexico)
when she became pregnant and unable to work.

I delivered a boy for her, aid they

stayed with us about a month.

Gerry arrived home in time to see Alex and Esther Julian off to Coahuila (Alex's
home) on vacation.

As usual, vacation and business was the program and 1 am sure

turned out to be more business than vacation!

The Bowlins had been invited to a young peoples camp in Saskatchewan, Canada, and

accented.

Again combining business and pleasure. (Cur first time to Canada.) The

kids'had been invited to spend the summer in Calif, where they would hear and have
to talk English, nothing but English! The boys stayed with the John V/illiams and
the girls with the Burt Shaws. (Both families from the Lakewood, Long Beach, Church
of Christ, and frequent visitors to Mexico). Johnny I7illiams brought his daughter,
Charlene, down to talk aid study Spanish for the summer and took all four of ours
backvith him. (I'm sure we got the better end of that swap, ^ kids for one young
-than.-we -left herwi-th Alex-and Esthar-at hour--homfi-. _h-e HAD, to talk, Spanish
or not talkl

I'm sure she talked).

The kids left on June 22 and Gerry and I left on the 30th for Canada.

V.'e spoke in

churches in Colorado and spent two days with Grin and Oleta Hardenbrook at Sturgis,
South Dakota on our wry to Canada. Camp lasted two v/eeks, then a short visit with
the Owen Still's (Jr.).

The trip home was via Montana, Idaho and Calif, stopping

one night with my mother in Geyserville, and on south to pick up the kids, then to
Gerry's folks near Idylwild. All rush rush to get home and enroll Bob in Secondary
School before August 25th.

September found Bob in Secondary School, much more expensive than primary school,
we were shocked to learn! Oscar and Kathy in 6th grade, (still segregrted, boys in

one room, girls in the other) and Mary in second grade, in the Benito Juarez School.
Mexican Bible Seminary classes began on the 19th with Gerry teaching a 7 A. M.
class twice a week. Getting "all my kids" off to school on time is presenting a

problem--and making our home "The International Hotel" into a short order joint too.

-3-

Gerry began preaching in the San Benito Church in the absence of the minister, and

new adults began attending, including Leanors folks who have been friends for years,
but have never been interested in "our Church".

October was "Convention Month",

first our ov/n Western Mexico Christian Convention

was held in the first floor of the Villa se Seris building (also serves as Seminary
Chapel) even tho it was not completed, no floor, no windows, etc. It was a v/onderful time of fellowship. The next week Gerry attended the Arizona Convention in
Phoenix,

then he and Alex left for the National Mexican Convention in Alex home

Church, Rosita, Coah. in Eastern Mexico. It is alv/ays encouraging to meet with

fellow Christians anywhere end especially in a so called catholic country like
Mexico. They both came home feeling up-lifted. They arrived in time to be here
for the visit of the Pres. of the Board of Directors of -Vestern Mexico Christian

Mission, Ben Hoff and his two son's Ben Jr. and Bill, and show them the Seminary
and Mission property and the work that is being done.
Vhile Gerry was in Coahuila we got our baby girl! Her recently widowed mother
gave her to us at birthbecause she knew she could not provide for her, in addit
ion to her other three. (She washes and irons for kO cents a dozen.) She told us;
"I don't want to see my baby die in her basket from hunger or coldyou can provide
for her and I know I can't". Truly she loved her child enough to provide a better

^or her in the home of others.

On Nov. 20th Gerry v;as called to El Centro, Calif, to preach the funeral of his
Uncle Henry Bowlin and after the service spent Thanksgiving with his parents, then
flew home to Herraosillo, from Mexicali. One hour and tv/enty minutes in place of
the usual 12 hours driving timeand cheaper too!
Esther Julian and I were invited to prepare a Mexican dinner for the wonderful
people at Chandler, Arizona. We were gone 5 days, met nev/ people and saw old friends
again. Among them the new minister at the Chandler Church, Irwin (and Irma) Son.

He brought communion to me when I was in Christian Hospital with a nev/ baby--that

baby, Kathy, is nov; 12 years old. How true are God's words, "He who has left
father and mother for my sake....he shall receive a hundred fold..(Mark 10-29-31)

We do enjoy our many "homes" among our many friends v/hom we are priviledged to
visit now and then.

December and Christmas prepere:ions, rchool and church programs and various trips
to the lawyer's office to prepare the papers for the adoption of Elizabeth Jean.
Oh those two O'clock feedings! Gerry says "I can see why it is adviseable to have
children v/hile one is young--after '+0 your eyes don't see so good at 2 A. M. !
Little Becky insists on feedings every h hours, day and night, but then guess all

can't be as good as Vevaat 8 months she sleeps thru until someone gets the school
kids up. Looks like v;e have an orphnage right in our own home, but one thing for
surewe have to put a stop to taking in kids or get a bigger house!

Christmas Eve, (Noche Bueno) here in Mexico is the big day, open house, and like
the rest of the Mexicans we had our dinner at nite.

First v/e ate tamalee with our

friends here and there, then came home to a dinner at 10 P.M.

North American custom of gift opening on Christmas morning.

We did hold to the

Bobby is now
and taller than I am, in first year secondary school, serves as
Junior Deacon at Church and is a first class Boy Scout Of Mexico. Just left for
a camp out, near a village where everyone

knows "La Doctora Americana!"

Oscar 15> has been v.dth us three years aid is still interested in becoming a big

league baseball player. He is in the 6th grade and studying harder this year;
says that 5*5 and 6*5 don't look so good on diplomas, so he v/ants 8's and 9's at
least. (He is doing better, winter tri-mester grade average was 8.2) He has gone
to visit his mother in Nogales, Sonera for New Years then "home" for classes
again on the 2nd.
He also serves as "Junior Deacon" in the absence of adult
deacon.

Kathy our 12 year old is our "leader".

She has never met anyone too big, too

small, too old or too young for her to handle.

She teaches a class of 8 to 20

youngsters 2 to 7 years old each Sunday and does a good job of it. One little 3
year old never says a word in Sunday School but goes home and tells her daddy
word-for-word what Kathy said I Kathy is taking piano this year, loves it, played

simple carols for us at Christmas!(She has had k months of lessons.)

Mary our 9 year old. is a second grader, is more like Bob, in that she does her
homework v/ithout having to be "made" to do it. She is beginning to do a few things
on her own--for so long she was just "Kathy's Shadow". She came to us two years
ago, to visit four days, and stayed.

ittle Becky was one month old on the 6th of December.

She is, as you can see a

dark headed little doll. Tho she is mighty little, she has each of us pretty well

spoiled!
the chance

She howls and someone jumps!

No doubt she will be a pretty good kid for^

she has!

Gerry oversees the Mission, the Seminary work, teaches at the San Benito Mission
as v/ell as the Seminary, listens, counsels and helps neighbors, friends, and

Christians alike on their problems of every day living, each (fey becoming more and
more a part of the community and authority on living and v/orking in Mexico.
I hold clinic here at home one afternoon a v/eek, go when I'm called to see those
who are unable to come to our home and gave several hundred polio shots under the

auspies of the Health Department, hold village Clinics, besides overseeing the
running of the house and family, doing my part of the office work, and working in

our local congregation, (mostly as chauffer!)

The big thrill of the year was to

see Leanor's dad step out on Christmas eve to make the good confession.

For one

who is an Indian from Central Mexico, where Catholicism has such a hold on the
families, the de cision was not easy, for in a sense he gave up his family, and
will be critiscized and ridiculed for turning his back on his "heritage." V/e

hope to see the other members of his immediate family baptized with him.
To each of you v;e say "Thank you" for your part in keeping Western Mexico Christian
Mission operating, with your offerings and gifts and your many prayers. As we
noiY enter a New Year may each of us be drawn closer to Him and be better fitted to
do His work throughout the year 1962.
And, now, may our Lord watch over you and keep you while we are apart; and finally
may we meet again in the sweet by and by.

WELLS

Far away from this

land "of Colfax is the town

of Wishitwas, where the

churches live and grow with
strange ideas, at least
different than yours and mine.
Why, in Pleasant Valley Church
in Wishitwas, - if the preacher
preaches longer than twenty minutes
he has to make a report in triplicate

to the Committee on Long Windedness,

and if there is anything a preacher
dislikes it's making reports in tri
plicate, because preachers never have
any carbon paper, Cohseq.uently, the

sermons are all 19 minutes and 58 seconds

long, on account of naturally he wants
all the time that's coming to him.
In this church, every time the
doors open the deacons are there, and
the elders too, and of all wonders, the
deacons are all there ahead of time

every Sunday!

Yes sir, they have suits,

and ties and they report fifteen minutes,

before the service starts, and if they

arent going to be there they let the
hePvd deacon knov? the day before.
Now isn't this a strange church indeed?

Members of our Bible School will be

participating in the Bible School,

parade Saturday, January 20th at 10:00 am.

We will be represented by a float which

will be constructed Friday at the church.

In the congregational meeting the

other day, the qualified speakers got
up one at a time and said v/hat a fine

'

job the pre-'Cher was doing, what with

the church'growing so much, and what

inaGi-air-sd-okne ofthe church needs

Then all the qualified voters yoted,

Pleasant

And the

speakers, each one have to be a, certified

Now this practice

Dear Fellow-laborers;

How long does it take to win a man to Christ in Mexico? A year? Two?
Five? Ten? The man whose baptismal picture is enclosed read a portion
of the Scriptures some fifteen years agoI Later he married, moved to
the city, lost contact with Christian workers 5 then some six years
ago he became acquainted with the Bowlin family. For several years
as we cultivated his friendship he showed himself to be rebellious

if not downright antagonistic to the things of the Lordhe is an

indian from a verv fanatically Catholic area in Mexico, In I96O

(four years later) his eldest daughter stayed in our home and began

attending services at the local San Benito Chapel. Then last year
Geneva began picking up the younger children for Bible School; later
Mama attended the -evening services and finally Don Chencho himself.
And of course the inevitable resultsthe necessity for a decisionthank God it was FOR Christ.

Some of you may remember that Don Chencho is our builder, so a

Christian bricklayer like Boni ('Boni from the Bridge')* his wife,
Lola, Alex Julian, who supervises our construction projects, his
wife, Esther, and many others as well as the Bowlin Family (espec
ially Mrs. Bowlin) had a part in winning this man to Christ.
uly as the Scriptures say, we cannot claim such and such a soul
as our own, but "we are laborers together with God", and such we

also consider you as you contribute your partyour prayers and your
funds and your encouragement via letters and visits to the field.
Share with us the joys of the mission field as wellsouls like Don
Chencho won to Christ.

Dear Friends of "lexico

Because of the concern manifested in the U.S. over infiltration of Comm

newspaper during the recent meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Organi

MEXICO'S STAUD AGAlilST CO'fnjUISM IN' LATIN AMERICA

(Translation by Gerald D. Bowlin

of article which appeared in the

Nermosillo, Sonora, ilEXICO, newspaper, "El Imparcial," of Jan. 25^*62)

"MEXICO SNOWS

NER INDEPENDENCE

Punta del Este, Uruguay, Jan. 25-

,Mexico,'by means of the discourse pronounced by her Minister of Foreign

Relations, Manuel Tello, clearly defined her position.
This delegate
deGT-lared that his government maintains an attitude of absolute independence
from doctrines foreign to those demanded by her constitution. He affir
med that the government of Mexico is not neutralist, but neither will it

be guided by foreign influences which indicate paths other than legal ones.
Ke also said that Mexico respects all the rights inherent in the nature
of citizenship, such as those of liberty of free expression, liberty of
religious belief, self-determination, etc., and, refering explicitly to
Cuba, he -said that that country can only begin to func-ti-on. on the__prjijici.ple_
of self-determination by the people the date there are free elections
to choose her government,
Mr, Tello thus' eliminated any idea that his government will back the
-communist tendencies of the'Cuban regime, but he also let all know that

it is decidedly against any idea of intervention or coersion of that

country which is hot countenanced by the laws (of the OAS).
"M.

TELLO DISGUSTS

THE COMMIJNISTS.

Mexico City, Mexico,

Jan.25

"The Mexncan reds were badly hurt by the violent blow which our Foreign
Minister aimed at them from Punta del Este by declaring that Mexico is
the enemy of all that smells of communism, and that the exotic theories

imported from Eurasia are not compatible with the Organization of

American States.

"MEXICO'S STAND"Page 2

Feb. 1962.

It hurt them so much that all the Ifexican born, Castro-brand, Russian

sympathizers which have infiltrated the student, labor, government worker

and political organizations received the news submissively, and have kept,

not only a descreet, but an elocuent silenca.

Thus it was clearly demonstrated to all the "bearded_ones," the friends of

Castro's brand of, communism, that all their
selves in angry vocifercation was merely because of the condescendence tne

Mexican government grants in our country.

And while from all sides have come applause.for the stand Mexico has ^^ken

in th^Confe?ence

del Este, the native-born communists, the fellow

travellers, and other such predators have remained mute.

These believed that Mexico would defend the co^unist palace guard which

has submerged Cuba in chaos, misery, and a moral economic and social
debacle.

The Partido Revolucionario Institucional (The FRI political party now in

power-GDB) said that Mexico will act in accordance with her- traditions,
and announced today that she would give a complete analysis of Chancellor
Tello*s message, which defined with meridian clarity that which is Mexico's
true position with relationship to the problem of Cuba.

Partido Accion Nacional (The PAMthe catholic partyGDB), which has

always criticized everything, in this occasion kept censure to itself, and

"The declaration made by Mr. Tellosaid PAWbefore the conference of

ESTHER M. JULIAN, BIBLE SCHOOLS

Dear Friends:

Next Monday a week of Special Meetings are to be begin, but first I might
mention that our local(6 congregations) Vacation Bible Schools,* using les' son sheets designed and printed by Lfrs. Geneva Bowlin and supervised by
Mrs. Esther Julian, wore held during July. The older children studied
the Bible Plan of Salvation; the younger, Bible Heroes.

Evangelist for the last week of our COMPREHENSIVE EVANGELISM campaign,

which begins"August 20th will be JACK E. BOAL, minister of the lilARYVALE
congregation, PHOENIX, ARIZONA (Partial Living-Link, llirs* Bowlin). tiis
Sunday, Aug. 19, is D-day, Decision Day, for all Hermosillo congregations,
and from the Pastors* enthusiastic reports each congregation should have
several Decisions for Christ.
}

This is, we believe, the first effort of Comprehensive Evangelism among

the Latin American churches (Comprehensive because it "comprehends" ALL
the church members they are to find the prospects, make the cultivation
visits, and bring in the Decisions for Christ). From my point of view, if
the members and ministers learn to build and work a prospect list the cam
paign will have been a success I

are taking a week of their vacation time to come to sweltering Hermosillo

us who labor in this City-Wide Comprehensive Evangelism Campaign.
Yours for a Christian Mexico,

Gerald D. Bowlin.

P.S.

The response to my special appeal for funds to purchase a VolksViTagen Kbrribi for Geneva has been gratifying. Enough was received to ma

for the next 18 months, to make the payments.. If you were not able
to give in JUly, please plan definitely to make a donation at a later
