Introduction
The m2 has been developed to provide a comprehensive,
yet simple-to-use means of monitoring, recording and
control refrigeration temperatures and other aspects of
refrigeration plant operation. It is intended for use in small
to medium food storage operations (for example a small
supermarket) where compliance with the Food Hygiene
Regulations is to be demonstrated. A variety of ancillary
control equipment may be in use in such installations, each
with its own specific requirements in terms of interfacing
and monitoring, and m2 can be configured to work in such
an environment.
Designed for operational simplicity, the system once
configured can display the status of each input point in turn
with the occurrence of any fault condition indicated
immediately by means of audible and visual alarms.
Further details on any aspect of the operation of the
installation are available via the key pad. In addition there
is the ability for authorised personnel to make adjustments
to the control and/or monitoring settings. Historical data is
stored within the system and may be viewed or printed on a
regular basis. The data is accessible both on and off-site
via the external modem connection and alarm calls can also
be generated if required.
The following sections provide a description of m2, and the
remainder of the manual provides further detail on the
configuration, operation, and maintenance of the system. It
is recommended that the appropriate part(s) are studied
before any attempt is made to use the system.

Safety
To prevent accidents arising from improper handling,
installation or operation, please read this manual carefully.

Validity
This manual was made in Febuary 2002 and applies to m2 Dual Comms with software version B2.2.

Manual

RS.8A.N4.02

m2 Version B2.2

System Overview

The m2 consists of a central monitoring unit which can monitor up to 16

local sensors or inputs which are usually located adjacent to the
equipment in question for example specific refrigerated areas (chiller
cabinets, freezers, cold rooms), plant rooms or gas detectors, up to 60
EKC 201/301/331 controllers and 32 standard RS485 connections (128
1/4 loads) via the third party bus. The precise layout and configuration
of these sensors and controllers is specific to each installation, and it is
not necessary for a typical operator to be familiar with the operation of
the sensors.

Alarms

The m2 provides audio and visual alarms whenever an input exceeds

its pre-set alarm levels. For night operation, the system can be pre-set
to dial-out using a digital dialler or via a modem whenever an alarm
occurs.

Security

Security is provided by having passcode access to the protected

settings. In the case of mains failure, an alarm is triggered after a delay.
The system can be pre-set to dial-out to an external telephone number if
required.
The m2 will always FAIL SAFE (except for modem dailout).

Battery Backup

The unit is provided with battery backup to continue historical logging

during a power failure. In this case, the display backlight will switch off
but the display will keep running. When an alarm occurs, the alarm
siren and the red flashing backlight will still operate. The backlight will
flash red, once every 5 seconds until the alarm is muted.

Note: When a mains failure lasts longer than 1 hour, the unit will cease
historical logging and stop alarm checking. However, all existing
historical readings remain in memory and are not lost.

The m2 can monitor up to a maximum of 99 points, including up to 60

EKC 201/301/331 controllers, and or an additional 32 standard RS485
connections (128 1/4 loads) via the third party protocol.

External Connections

If hard copy details of the monitor readings is required, a parallel printer

port is provided which can be connected to an Epson compatible
parallel printer.
An RS232 serial interface via a 9-way D type connector is provided
which allows either a directly connected IBM compatible Personal
Computer (PC) or a Minitel to be connected for operational and
configuration purposes or to allow connection to a modem.
If a PC is connected either directly or via the modem, the alarms and
monitor readings can be read and the set-up details can be changed
remotely, using Danfoss Central Station software (refer to manual
RS.8C.G for more information).
This manual will simply cover the configuration and use of the m2 in
monitoring and controlling a refrigeration installation.

A pulsed input function is available for accepting pulses from a power
meter. The pulsed input is displayed as shown which includes two
values. The large value is the Rate and indicates either current kW
usage (Const) once per minute or the Peak kW usage within the
current sample period.
If the Rate current usage is displayed, this value will vary with the
actual energy consumed within the last minute. If the Peak usage is
displayed, this will only change if the usage in the last minute was
greater than any other minute in the sample period - hence it will show
the highest or Peak value. The Rate value is stored by the m2 and will
be displayed in the graph associated with this point.

Pulsed Input

The second smaller value will show the accumulated kWh used within
the current sample period. This value will increase over the sample
period then reset to zero at the end.

the point in alarm and noting its present status and alarm settings. The
fault will need to be found and rectified before the alarm can be
successfully cleared.
If there appears to be no problem, it could be that the fault has cleared
itself (e.g. the temperature has since returned to an acceptable level).
In this case, the point will stop pulsing.
If there are no further faults on other points, the alarm status will be
cleared.

Configuring the System via the Key Pad

Entering Characters in Edit Fields

There are two types of character sets that are used in the m2 depending
on which edit field has been selected:
Full Character Set
This is used in most of the edit fields. When the edit field has been
selected, the characters within the set can be cycled through using the
or keys. If the key is pressed first, it will start at A and go
forward through the character set. If the key is pressed first, it will
start at z and go backwards through the character set.
When a character has been selected, press either

Alphanumeric Character Set

If the key is pressed first, it will start at 0 and go forward through the
character set. If the key is pressed first, it will start at z and go
backwards through the character set.
By pressing the or keys, the field is incremented or
decremented. By pressing the or keys you can skip across the
unit fields to make entering larger numbers easier.

Numeric Only Fields

If your language uses Diacritics (accented characters), the m2 provides

the facility to enter these both from the local keypad and remotely via PC.
This facility is language sensitive such that only Diacritics which are
relevant to the language active on the unit are available. The method of
entry is to select a base character as normal and then add the required
accent, e.g. in French if an is required the procedure is to first select
e as described above, then enter Diacritic mode and select the acute
accent . To enter a Diacritic mode on a suitable character, hold down

Diacritic Entry

the like a shift key and press the key once. This will add the first
available accent to your character, any more which are available can
then be selected by pressing the and keys together. When the
required accent is displayed, simply moving on to the next character
stores this and cancels the Diacritic mode. If you move the cursor onto
an already accented character, the unit will automatically enter Diacritic
mode allowing you to change the accent. Diacritic mode may be
manually cancelled by pressing the

and

once more.

Y Base

This field refers to the lowest value the graph will show. This value
should be slightly lower than you expect the temperature to drop to. If
auto scale in the Y axis is selected this value is not used. Use the ,
, or ' keys to enter the required value.

4 - 20mA Inputs

These values are used exclusively in conjunction with a standard 420mA input which can represent pressure, humidity, level, flow rate, or
any other variable which can produce a 4-20mA output.
The value for the upper and lower limits can therefore represent %
(RH), PPM, bar or psi etc., depending on the medium being measured.
A numerical value for 4mA (lower limit) and 20mA (higher limit) is
entered, and the m2 automatically scales the input for a figure
proportional to the measurement. Use the , , and keys to
enter the required value.

Export

If the Pulsed Input is being setup via Danfoss Central Station software,
there is an extra field named Export that can be used.
This field is set if the points data is to be exported to AKM format for
analysis by Power Focus or similar software.

Pulsed Input Installation Notes

The m2 Pulsed Input requires a volt free contact or an open collector

and the pusle width must be a minimum of 80mS.
The Pulsed Input will operate with either PT1000 or Thermistor m2 input
boards.

Resolution

The resolution of the pulse data depends on the sample rate of the m2
the longer the sample rate, the greater the resolution, as well as the
resolution of the power meter being used.
For example:
If the power meter outputs five pulses for every Kilo Watt Hour (KWh)
and with a current usage of 6KW.
With an m2 sample rate of 3 minutes:

1 or 2 pulses received per 3 minute interval ((5 pulses x 6 KWh) / 60

minutes) x 3 minutes = 1.5
1 pulse x 0.2KW x 20 (for 1 hour) = 4KW
2 pulses x 0.2KW x 20 (for 1 hour) = 8KW
Resolution is 4. Values could either be 0, 4, 8, 12 etc.
With an m2 sample rate of 15 minutes:
7 or 8 pulses received per 15 minute interval ((5 pulses x 6 KWh) / 60
minutes) x 15 minutes = 7.5
7 pulse x 0.2KW x 4 (for 1 hour) = 5.6KW
8 pulses x 0.2KW x 4 (for 1 hour) = 6.4KW
Resolution is 0.8. Values could be 0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3.2, 4.0, 4.8, 5.6, 6.4
etc.
With the Peak option, the sample rate is 1 minute (though the storage
rate is whatever the m2 is set for) which gives a very poor graph
resolution, this makes the Peak value very inaccurate unless the power
meter outputs many pulses per KWh.
This option allows the coordinated defrost setup of a network of EKC
controllers. From the Setup Menu, select the Defrost Schedule option.

tables available - Cf1, Cf2, Cf3 and Cf4. Use the or keys to cycle
through the curves until the correct type is displayed.
The table can have up to 12 break points to define the Curve Table
relationship. Each of these break points will have a corresponding Input
and Output value which must be entered by the user. The Output value
will be the reading which should be displayed on the Point Detail /
Overview Screen for a given Resistance/Current value. The Input Value
will be an Internally Scaled version of that Resistance/Current Input
value.
Below are explanations of each fields displayed for defining the curve
tables:
Con 1 as

This field is for selecting either 'RESISTOR' or

'CURRENT' depending on the type of probe being
used.

To use =

This field displays the Internally Scaled version of

a Resistance/Current connected across the unit's
Input 1 and COM terminals. This value will be in
the range of 0 to 9999. This readout is used to
determine what to put in the Input field when
setting up the Curve Table.

Converted = This field displays the result of applying the

selected Curve table function to the 'To use ='
value being displayed. Thus when no Break Input
& Output values have been entered, this will give
an out of range reading (SC/OC). As a Curve
Table is built up, however, it will start to show the
Output value corresponding to whatever the
Resistance/Current connected across Input 1.

Setting up a Curve Table

Curve

This field is used to select 1 of the 4 curve tables

(Cf1 - Cf4).

Break

This field is used to select the break point being

set up on the curve (1 - 12).

Input

This field is for the Internally Scaled input value to

be used at the break point selected. The 'To use ='
value can be copied into this field by pressing ' '
and ' ' together. This field has a range of between
0 and 9999.

Output

This field is for the Output value at the Break Point/

Input value selected. This has a range of between
-999.9 and 999.9.

The table should be completed so that the Input readings increase in

value. Any reading below the first value or above the last value will
return out of range Output Values (OC/SC).
In order to set up a Table you will require either a Resistance box (for
resistance probes) or a Current Source (for Current Probes) plus the
manufacturer's data defining the Input/Output relationship of the probe.
The method is described for a Resistance probe, but it is the same for
the Current case except that it is necessary to put the Input 1 link in the
4-20mA position before starting.
1.

Select (up to) 12 Output (Resistance) values from the

manufacturer's data sheet which correspond to Input (e.g.
Temperature) values in the range you wish to measure. For
maximum accuracy these points should be distributed evenly
across the required range.

2.

Connect the Resistance Box across the Input No. 1 and C

terminals of the unit and set it to the lowest of your selected
Output values. When you do this you should see a value appear
in the 'To use =' field. This is the Internally Scaled version of the
resistance you have connected. Set the Break field to 1 and then
go to the Input field.

3.

Next either manually enter the value displayed in the 'To use ='
field, or press the and keys together to copy it to the Input
field.

4.

Move to the Output field and enter the Output (e.g. Temperature)
value from your probe data corresponding to the Resistance
value you set.

5.

Move the Edit Box to the Break field again and increase its value
by 1, which will clear the Input and Output fields.

6.

Set your next chosen Resistance value from the probe data and,
when the 'To use =' value has stabilised, repeat from step 3
until all your points have been entered.

Once all points have been entered, you can vary the resistance
connected to Input 1 and observe the effect in the Converted field. For a
given resistance, this value should now be the same as that shown in
the manufacturer's probe data.
For 4-20 mA inputs the 'Input type' must be set to 'CURRENT', then the
Input/Output fields will change to 4mA/20mA. The curve table can now
be set up. For example, if a pressure sensor was being used which
produced 4mA at 0.1 bar and 20mA at 30 bar, then simply add 0.1 to the
4mA field and 30 to the 20 mA filed. Ensure the point set-up and jumper
link on the input terminal is set to 4-20mA.

Appendix A
'AKM' Call Type
The Danfoss AKM has been updated to allow it to receive alarms from
m2 units. However the m2 alarm dialout procedure differs from the
Danfoss Gateway in that it is not as tolerant of faulty telecommunication
equipment. The m2 would make repeated calls to try to transmit the
alarm message up to a maximum of 8. This conformed to the current
telecommunication regulations when the procedure as defined.
AKM will continue to try to transmit the alarm indefinitely. It can also
control the power to the modem using one of it relays. It does this after
ten failed attempts to dial-out and every 6 hours.
The 'AKM' call type has been created to mimmic the same dialout as the
AKM.

Background

The m2 has two relays that are normally used for alarm indication. The
Relay 2 (REP ALARM) can be used to control the modem power. The
Relay is rated at 24V 1A max, so the low voltage power after the mains
transformer must be switched. Mains voltage MUST NOT be connected
to this relay.
