ID No.:

(L03-L13)
Tutorial Section:

1. (Demonstration) (page 10, Q. 21, Domain) A stone is thrown vertically upward from the ground at
a speed of 40 m/s at time t = 0. Its distance d (in meters) above the ground is approximated by the
function f (t) = 40t 5t2 . What is the domain of the function f (t)?
2. (Demonstration) (p. 11, Q. 83) Use the definition of absolute value to graph the equation |x| |y| = 1.

3. (Demonstration) (p. 36, Q. 27, Graph the inverse) Determine the intervals on which f (x) =
has an inverse, and sketch its graph.

x+2

4. (Demonstration) (p. 35, Q. 16, Graph the inverse) Determine the intervals on which f (x) = |2x + 1|
has an inverse, and sketch its graph.

5. (Class work) (page 10, Q. 22) A stone is dropped off a bridge from a height of 20 m above a river. If t
represents the elapsed time (in seconds) after the stone is released, then its distance d (in meters) above
the river is approximated by the function f (t) = 20 5t2 . What is the domain of the function f (t)?
Answer: t cannot be negative, thus t 0. Also, the distance cannot be negative, thus f (t) = 205t2 0,
and hence 0 t 2. Therefore, the domain is [0, 2].
6. (Class work) (p. 11, Q. 70, interpreting secant line) The speed of a car prior to hard
braking can be
estimated by the length of the skid mark. The skid mark function is given by S = 30` in mile/hour,
where ` is in feet. Sketch the function between 50 ` 150, and a secant between the two points at
` = 50 and ` = 150 and interpret its meaning.
Answer: The graph is

The slope of the secant line can be interpreted as the average rate of change of the speed over [50, 150].

7. (Class work) (p. 22, Q. 24) Graph the function

2
x x 2
, if x 6= 2;
f (x) =
x2

2,
if x = 2.
Answer: If x 6= 2, then f (x) =
is as follows:

x2 x 2
(x 2)(x + 1)
=
= x + 1. If x = 2, then f (x) = 2. The graph
x2
x2

8. (Class work) Use the definition of absolute value to graph the equation |x| |2y| = 1.
|x| 1
Answer: Since |2y| = |x| 1, i.e., |y| =
0, |x| 1 cannot be negative, hence x 1 or x 1.
2
x1
if x 1, y 0;

2 ,

x1 ,
if
x 1, y < 0;
2
y = x1

if x < 1, y 0;

2 ,

x+1
if x < 1, y < 0;
2 ,
Therefore, the graph is

9. (Class work) (p. 36, Q. 34, Graph the inverse) Determine the intervals on which f (x) =
an inverse, and sketch its graph.

3 x has

Answer: The domain of f (x) is (, 3], and f (x) is 1-1 on its domain. Therefore, it has an inverse.
The range of f (x) is [0, ), so the domain of the inverse should be [0, ), too. And the inverse is

y = 3 x y2 = 3 x x = 3 y2
So f 1 (x) = 3 x2 , x [0, ). And the graph is

1
10. (Class work) (p. 36, Q. 34, Graph the inverse) Determine the intervals on which f (x) = | x 1| has
2
an inverse, and sketch its graph.
