Prints Charming
You might not have heard of the SCOTTISH PRINT NETWORK, but its a consortium of five
print studios: DCA, Edinburgh Printmakers, Glasgow Print Studio, Highland Print Studio and
Peacock Visual Arts. And theyve commissioned a new exhibition called BELOW ANOTHER
SKY which comes to INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY from 12 MAR-11 APR. The
work on show, which explores the full range and potential of printmaking in contemporary
visual arts practice, was produced following a series of international residencies. Artists
based in Scotland travelled to Commonwealth countries and artists based in, or originating
from, Australia, Canada, India and Pakistan visited Scotland to work directly with one of the
five print studios in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness.
Featured artists are: SARNATH BANERJEE, CHRISTINE
BORLAND, FAHD BURKI, ROHINI DEVASHER, EMILY
FLOYD, MICHAEL FULLERTON, LOUISE HOPKINS,
JANICE KERBEL, JIM LAMBIE (pic), SCOTT MYLES,
ELIZABETH OGILVIE, ROBERT ORCHARDSON, AMOL
PATIL, CAROL RHODES and, perhaps best known of all,
DAVID SHRIGLEY. Theres a connected talk event at
IMAG on 26 MAR at 6pm when you can join staff from
the Highland Print Studio on an exhibition tour of Below
Another Sky, highlighting the stories and techniques
behind the artworks that were produced by Sarnath
Banerjee, Christine Borland, Elizabeth Ogilvie and Amol
Patil here in Inverness. FREE, no need to book.
Another interesting exhibition at IMAG is on until 07 MAR and worth hurrying along to.
REALISING POTENTIAL is a multi-media exhibition of insightful and inspiring art works
created by prisoners participating in the Fife College Learning Programmes at HMP
Inverness includes ceramics made following a series of inspiring workshops, exploring
and interpreting the past through Scottish artefacts in the IMAG Collections and also
digital collages of the wide variety of work which has been created by the ever changing
population of the prison.
Also recommended this month: At CASTLE GALLERY, JONATHAN SHEARER has an
exhibition of his glorious oil paintings of Highland landscapes, taking in the rivers
Blackwater, Affric, Averon and Findhorn, as well as Skye, Arisaig and Iona. Jonathan
takes his paints and easel with him into the mountains, painting swiftly, applying thick
oil paint using trowels and brushes to capture the fleeting moment and rapidly changing
light conditions. And if you havent caught GARETH GITTINGS new exhibition yet, head
to IG:LU where his alluring abstracts referencing life and love are on show until 13 MAR.

Americas Greatest?
Weve long held the belief that JULIANNE MOORE is Americas greatest living actress and
while shes as guilty as her peers of blotting her copybook with some roles that dont do
justice to her talents, when she gets it right shes astonishing. And as her career develops
shes getting the accolades she deserves, last year for the excellent Maps To The Stars
and now for STILL ALICE [1] (06 MAR) in which she plays a linguistics professor diagnosed
with early-onset Alzheimers disease alongside ALEC BALDWIN, KRISTEN STEWART and
KATE BOSWORTH. Shes already picked up a BAFTA for the role and by the time this lands
on your mat, she might just have won an Oscar too And just to prove the point about her
odd choices, or to put it more kindly, range, Moore also pops up this month (alongside
JEFF BRIDGES, BEN BARNES, ALICIA VIKANDER and KIT HARINGTON) in SEVENTH SON
[2], a fantasy action adventure about armies fighting evil spirits. Not a role thats likely to
be remembered as her greatest moment, but frankly, wed forgive her just about anything.
CHAPPIE [3] (06 MAR) is the much-anticipated newie from District 9s Neill Blomkamp.
Chappie voiced by the excellent SHARLTO COPLEY is an experimental robot derived
from a police droid (by DEV PATEL) to be able to think, learn and develop feelings. But the
authorities (SIGOURNEY WEAVER, HUGH JACKMAN) get wind of this radical new technology
and want rid of him. Blomkamp possesses a great talent for combining realistic future tech
and humanity. He also likes using local talent and he turned to South African rave-rap outfit
Die Antwoord to star alongside the big names.
Apparently Kenneth Branagh, director of Disneys live-action retelling of CINDERELLA [4]
(27 MAR) claims that his version gives the tale a proto-feminist twist. And the presence
of HELENA BONHAM CARTER and HAYLEY ATWELL should invest it with some sort of vim,
but most interesting for many viewers will be the fact that screenings will also feature the
short, FROZEN FEVER [5], a clever move to keep the Frozen franchise ticking over until the
longed-for full-length sequel. This ones all about a birthday party, so expect a whole new
line of Frozen-branded cakes to be hitting shops near you shortly.
More animation in HOME [6], the latest Dreamworks flick from the creators of The Croods about
an alien making friends with an earthling. Not heard that one before, but voices from Steve
Martin, Jim Parsons (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory) and, er, Rihanna, should save the day.
Then theres PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 5: THE GHOST DIMENSION, the latest instalment
of the bump-in-the-night series, wherein shaky cameras replace artistic imagination.
INSURGENT [7], meanwhile, is part of another in-for-the-long-haul series, the second
instalment of the movies based on the Divergent series of books. Kate WINSLET, SHAILENE
WOODLEY and THEO JAMES star in a frantic sci-fi action tale set in a ruined Chicago.

12

We told you last issue about SELMA and EX MACHINA, both still showing this month and highly recommended,
as is SUITE FRANAISE (EDEN COURT, 27 MAR-02 APR), a World War 2 romantic drama set in occupied France
and starring the magnificent acting quartet of KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS, RUTH WILSON, MICHELLE WILLIAMS and
MARGOT ROBBIE. Maybe Julianne Moore has competition after all.

KIDS

Biggest event of the month for kids (and indeed many grown-ups, is the release of the Spongebob
Squarepants movie, the magnificently titled SPONGEBOB: SPONGE OUT OF WATER, which will
be showing everywhere from 27 MAR. Following the same recipe for success as LEGO and
Shaun The Sheep, therell be loads of references aimed at adults in between all the mayhem. Its
in 3D, but surely crying out for the newly hyped 4D, wherein water will be splashed hither and yon.
Dont let on, but theres already an ace form of 3D called theatre and its the form in which
more underwater high-jinx will be showcased at EDEN COURT on 01 APR when the Octonauts
take to the stage for the very first time in OCTONAUTS AND THE DEEP SEA VOLCANO
ADVENTURE. An action-packed interactive musical, it finds Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, and
Peso embarking on an exciting new mission.
Aimed at a very young audience, WHATEVER THE WEATHER (EDEN COURT, 08 MAR) is the
latest production from M6 Theatre, set in an Alpine Weather House. A man and a woman pop
out at different times depending on whether its sunny or rainy but what happens when the
weather goes topsy-turvy? Its a plot worthy of Beckett.
Also worth looking out for is the KIDS EXPO coming to INVERNESS LEISURE on SAT 28 MAR.
In conjunction with Inverness Leisure & MFR, the event is the largest family informative day in
the Highlands & Moray and will bring together a large selection of services offering advice on all
aspects of family life - including education, childcare, money advice, recycling, healthy lifestyle,
kids/baby classes, local businesses targeting families, competitions, charity fundraising and more.

tells us what weather to expect
today. When the little woman
comes out its going to be sunny!
When the little man comes
out its going to rain! The two
characters couldnt be more
different. But what happens
when the winds of change blow?
It might rain, it might get a bit

Hail The Folk Heroes

A great month for folk fans, with the highlight being the visit by legends of the genre,
BOYS OF THE LOUGH [1] to UNIVERSAL HALL, FINDHORN on FRI 13 MAR. Hugely
influential since the early seventies, their original line-up included the inimitable
Cathal McConnell with Dick Gaughan (just before he turned solo), Robin Morton (who
eventually left to form legendary label Temple Records) and Aly Bain the latter only
leaving a decade ago after thirty years service. Cathal remains on flute and singing
duties with such a unique voice and character he embodies their sound now joined
by Brendan Begley (accordian) and Garry OBriain (guitar) alongside Alys replacement
Kevin Henderson from Fiddlers Bid. Highly, highly recommended.
And theyre not the only folk treats. THE POOZIES [2] featuring founder member
and 2014 The Voice runner-up, SALLY BARKER visit GLEN URQUHART PUBLIC
HALL on TUE 17 MAR. Sally is joined by (also founder) MARY MACMASTER (electro
harp), MAIREARAD GREEN (accordian) and EILIDH SHAW (fiddle). Expect close vocal
harmonies, raucous frenzy and everything in between.
Keeping the big names coming, Ironworks have THE DANGLEBERRIES [3] (14 MAR)
and MNRAN [4] (04 APR); and for folk from that far-flung America, you cant go wrong
with the flamboyant banjo-wielding mama from Flagstaff, Arizona (but now living in
Edinburgh), CERA IMPALA [5] who, with her band THE NEW PROHIBITION will be
showing at EDEN COURT on WED 18 MAR why shes garnering so many accolades
from Americana fans.
For those who prefer something a little more pop & rock, a trio of acts with varying
degrees of heritage status come to IRONWORKS in forthcoming weeks. MIDGE URE
[6] (18 MAR) and REEF [7] (02 APR) will give you pretty much what you expect, while
THE VIEW [8] (29 MAR) may no longer be the young whippersnappers whove visited
the Highlands ever since they first burst on the scene, but can still be guaranteed to
raise rafters.
As always, tribute acts are very much in evidence, this month including tribs to MEAT LOAF,
JIM REEVES, HARRY NILSSON and KATE BUSH see listings for details on those >>.
Finally a word for a couple of interesting new ventures: UNKNOWN PLEASURES
(IRONWORKS, 06 MAR) finds LIONEL and HUNTER & THE BEAR headlining a
monthly event featuring new bands and DJing from both Netsounds and IndieNess,
while FRIDUB (MAD HATTERS, 13 MAR) is for fans of reggae and dub theres a
live performance from RUDY ALBA, while DJs Rabsta, Dropz, Butterscotch and Dan
Tierney are your controllers for what should be a mighty night.

SABA DOUGLAS-HAMILTON: The Secret Life of Elephants

Eden Court, Inverness, Thu 05 Mar

SABA DOUGLAS-HAMILTON is one of the most engaging

wildlife presenters on TV and perhaps the most committed,
being a trustee of Save The Elephants and tireless in
her determination to conserve African wildlife and its
indigenous people. Her talk at EDEN COURT on 05
MAR should be fascinating, especially if her answers to
our questions from her Kenyan home are anything to go
by. You can read the full, fascinating interview, including
a heartbreaking tale about a dying elephant and her calf
on our website at whatsonhighlands.com, but before that,
heres the vital question:

SPECIALS

Can we get to the bottom of this memory thing? Do they

REALLY never forget? Elephants certainly do have phenomenal
memories, and with the environment they live in they have to. Their
detailed knowledge and understanding of the landscape is passed
down through the generations, from mother to child, and can lie
dormant for decades before its needed. About 15-20 years ago
we had a family of elephants walk quite close past our farm in
Naivasha, which has become one of the major flower farming
areas of Kenya. It mustve once been an old elephant route that
linked the Mau forest to the Aberdares, but elephants hadnt been
seen there for generations. So its likely the matriarch had walked
that route at least once when she was a little calf, remembered it
in a time of distress, and in her old age chose to lead her family to
what she thought would be greener pastures.

Saving The Elephants

Youll be familiar with SABA DOUGLAS-HAMILTON [1] from a string of TV shows
including Big Cat Diary, Wild,Unknown Africa and, most notably, The Secret Life Of
Elephants. The latter was a remarkable insight into creatures that were constantly
making new discoveries about and which are vital to the eco-system of the planet.
And animals that Saba herself cares deeply about, being the public face of her
fathers Save The Elephants charity, Coming to Inverness (with which she has
family connections) from her native Kenya, shes at EDEN COURT on 05 MAR
to tell more about her life and passions. You can find out more about her in our
interview opposite <<< and on our website at whatsonhighlands.com
More tales of wild adventure from ASH DYKES [3] who comes to EDEN COURT
on 24 MAR. His BREAKING MONGOLIA: THE LONELY SNOW LEOPARD gives him
the chance to relate how he broke a world record by walking across that country
dragging a 120kg cart full of provisions, battling exhaustion, sandstorms and more.
And to round off a trio of appearances by people with extraordinary lives,
yachtswoman TRACY EDWARDS [2] is giving a Royal Scottish Geographical Society
lecture at Highland Council Chamber, Glenurquhart Road on 09 MAR called HIGHS
AND LOWS OF LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE. Edwards won international fame as
a skipper in the first all-female crew to sail around the world, in the 1989-90
Whitbread Round the World Race, and has since broken numerous world records.

Rather more sedate is DORNOCH FIBRE

FEST which runs from 1315 MAR and has
become a favourite in the towns calendar.
Theres a programme of masterclasses
and demonstrations with a wide range of
stalls selling everything the crafter needs.
Booking for the masterclasses is essential.

both plant and bought-in dyes, while a third Masterclass introduces you to
something called jelly-roll quilting, whatever that may be. If you ever thought you
would not be able to make a quilt here is your chance to get to grips with the craft.
The demonstrations include beginners crochet, arm knitting, peg loom weaving
and the exciting Naal binding, a Viking craft. Entry is free from 10am to 4pm at the
Social Club in Dornoch.

On The Up (and Down?)

The recent BBC Scotland series The Mountain was a fly-on-the-wall (or ptarmigan-on-theslope) look at life in Aviemore that may have reminded many just what a great place it is
for winter sports. And the seasons now in full swing, with events not just on our doorstep,
but on a number of other ranges nearby.
Most intriguing of all is UPBATTLE @ CAIRNGORM on SAT 21 MAR, a derby race featuring
the lesser known discipline of splitboarding [1]. Not some kind of fiendish new CIA torture,
rather a snowboard that splits along its length into separate skis, something that frankly
seems the greatest invention of all time. More snowsports taking place in the Coe Cup,
part of the FREEDOM SERIES @ GLENCOE MOUNTAIN on SAT 14 MAR and the biggest
shebang of all, the SKISCOTLAND SNOW FESTIVAL @NEVIS RANGE on 28 & 29 MAR.
Theres also a bit of SKI MOUNTAINEERING , again at Nevis Range, on SAT 28 MAR,
and with perhaps a couple of months still to go this looks like being another successful
season, especially since major investment to upgrade facilities has just been announced.
Away from the slopes, long-distance racing is up and, er, running, with the biggest event
of the month being the INVERNESS HALF MARATHON on SUN 08 MAR. A fine precursor
to the full-length version later in the year, this is a time to get those limbs back into action
after the long winter break.
Football-wise, this could well be one of the most thrilling ends to the season for years,
albeit for very different reasons when it comes to supporters of our two local teams.
ROSS COUNTY are really going to have to turn their glimpses of excellence into points
pretty sharpish if they want to avoid relegation, though there should be a chance to pick
up a few wins post-split. ICT meanwhile are overachieving like never before and came a
hairs breadth away from being the first team to win six successive matches in January. Its
frustrating that they were happier to take a pittance (rumoured to be around the 150,000
mark) for Billy McKay, when his goalscoring contribution could have brought far greater
rewards in terms of European qualification, but thems the breaks and Yogi Hughes has
to be in the running for Manager Of The Season whatever happens. This month ICT are
at home to DUNDEE UTD on SAT 14 MAR, another team showing a bright way forward for
Scottish football, even if they too have had to lose a remarkable young talent, in their case
Thurso-born Gary Mackay-Steven.

it can go no faster than that. Why

though, does it need a sign on the
back telling us that - all road vehicles
in this country are limited to 70mph
- its the law of the land that youre
not allowed to travel faster than that. I
wonder whose benefit the sign is for?
It can only be seen by someone right
behind it so I suppose if youre stuck
behind this vehicle at 50 miles per
hour on a single carriageway it serves
to add to your frustration by letting you
know it is actually capable of travelling
much faster. Likewise if you were of
a criminal type and were intent on
committing some sort of crime against
the wee van .. and .. you were ok with
breaking the speed limit - and we
know youd have no problem with that
because your criminality has already
been established - you know youd
be able to get very slowly away from
the crime scene by simply travelling at
SEVENTY-ONE miles per hour, safe in
the knowledge that theres nothing the
van driver could do to catch up! KEN

SAT 28 FEB

I must look into applying for a licence

to loiter, apart form the phrase
heres my loiter licence being fun
to say - imagine how it could upset
the authorities Sergeant: wheres
that chap you caught walking slowly
and with no apparent purpose along
the side of the canal? .. Why isnt
he still in the cells? .. Constable: I
had to let him go this time, he had
a certificate of authority from the
National Loitery. I was standing there
a good 10 minutes pondering all this hope no one reported me.
Later that same day, or perhaps
the next its of no import, I noticed
another sign - this one on the back
of a little red van. It said that the
vans speed was limited to 70mph
.. clearly a nonsense since it was
travelling around 30 when I saw it ..
and .. if 70 is the only speed it can
do how does it ever stop or for that
matter get started. Of course I realise
now, that limited to 70 doesnt mean
thats the only speed option, it means

LIFESTYLE

On my way from the car park into

town the other day I spotted a sign,
or you could say, I noticed a notice.
I find Im quite often noticing notices,
still I suppose thats the way of them.
This sign/notice/placard, call it
what you will, was on a small scrap
of what looked like no-mans land,
although it obviously wasnt because
the notice forbade parking there. No
matter, as I said, Id already parked
elsewhere, however the notice also
said that unauthorised loitering
would be reported .. which made
me stop and think: Who would it be
reported to - your parents? mum,
dad. Kenneths loitering again! ..
and .. I didnt realise there could be
such a thing as authorised loitering.
As in Thats me off out to dawdle
along the canal .. well wrap up
warm, and for goodness sake dont
forget your licence! - you know what
happened last time when you left your
authorisation at home, you dont want
another night in the cells.

Deep South Comes North

If you enjoyed SCOTTISH BALLETs production of THE NUTCRACKER, youll be delighted
to learn that the company are returning to EDEN COURT from 12-14 MAR with their
award-winning production of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE [1], adapted from
Tennessee Williams tale. Eve Mutso was lauded for her portrayal of the iconic Blanche
DuBois, the fading southern belle who moves into her sister Stellas New Orleans
apartment, only to find Stellas brutish husband setting out to destroy her. Expect the
atmosphere of the steamy, sticky Deep South to transform the Inverness winter.
More sassy dance at ROOSTER [2] (EDEN COURT, 19 & 20 MAR) from the wonderful
RAMBERT company. Christopher Bruces electrifying celebration of the swinging sixties
celebrates the rocknroll swagger of The Rolling Stones with sharp-suited men and
strong, alluring women performing courtship dances to the bands biggest hits from a
time when they actually meant something. Its one of Ramberts most popular works
and tops an intriguing bill which also features Terra Incognita by pioneering dancemaker
Shobana Jeyasingh and the latest work from dances hottest property Alexander Whitley.
If dance fans are in for a treat this month at Eden Court, then comedy aficionados will
be virtually taking up residence in the place as a host of big names come to town. First
up on 07 MAR is the ubiquitous JIMMY CARR [3], a regular visitor who, despite being
on TV every hour of every day, still packs in the crowds for live shows. Whether hes
subverting misogyny or just being mean remains open to debate, but theres no denying
his live skills. Just as adept and way more likeable is DYLAN MORAN [4], wholl be
showcasing his slightly sozzled genius on 08 MAR, while on 15 MAR were treated to
an appearance from JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH [5], a musical genius of sorts with a world
view that many of us would do well to heed. And he knows whats what about wasps
too. Most invigorating performance of the month might come from the extraordinary
STEWART LEE [6], who brings his ROOM WITH A STEW to Eden Court on 17 MAR. His
meta-comedy may not be to everyones taste and the way he brings a deceptive free-jazz
spirit to his tightly honed shows takes some getting used to, but once you get drawn
into his performance you start to realise there are few other comedians in the world
who can match his combination of world-weary insight and vicious elegance. Absolutely
unmissable.
The laughs dont end there, with SUSAN CALMAN [7] bringing her acclaimed LADY LIKE
show to EC on 27 MAR, while earlier in the month at Eden Court, on 10 MAR, HERO
WORSHIP [8] is a one man show about escapism, superheroes, and being just a
little too into comic books. Who is Anachronism and what is his power? Youll have to
go along to find out. And if men in masks and tight costumes are your thing, youll be
wanting to also take in the latest ROCKNWRESTLE [9] at IRONWORKS on 27 MAR.

Making The Most Of You:

beauty

Get your face (& more) up to date

Make-up tips for 2015

Wanna know what the fashionistas think you should be wearing on your beautiful face,
hair and nails for 2015? Of course you do we all do...
The big move is to chuck your blusher and go with your natural face - so here s a few
dominant trends out there to consider adopting to augment that look.
Bold Red Lips nothing really new but you ll be seeing a lot of this from newsreaders
to catwalks. Those entirely in the know will seek shades with a hint of orange for extra
stick-out-ability . Bosh.
Black Eyes No, not that kind (!), but unsubtle, jumbo crayon-like outlines, overlines,
etc. Try just applying to the outer corners, leaving the inner ones bare, or go top-only for
a little retro, or tight-line all round. More goth less panda - although purple lids is still a
thing , apparently.
Coming Undone Hair Turning adversity into triumph - for those who s tresses refuse
to stay within the connes of whatever bounds you put on them - clips, pins, scrunchies,
etc - congratulations, you re now ber-trendy. The rest of you, loosen up a bit. Literally.
Braids are still cool, btw... And for them that like - wet heads are in too!
Subtle Nails Oh ma gawsh, after all that intense nail-art of the last couple of years,
give y self a break and let nature take over. Sort of. Nude shades is in, like, as is leaving
a mostly bare nail with literally a spot of colour to highlight. Negative space, they call it.
Save yourself a lot of time too - perhaps top up that eye-liner...

EATING OUT

Lochardil House Hotel

Stratherrick Road, Inverness
So, finally, we end up pulling into
the carpark of the Lochardil House
Hotel, hoping that they offer lunches.
A quick glance at the menuboards
outside confirms that they do. Phew!
We grab the camera from the car and
venture forth
Non-linear story telling is all the rage,
so we thought why not?. Depending
on how deeply you look into these
things, this story starts either in
March 1965 with ten inches of snow
on the ground, or back in the home
office this morning, with ten inches
of snow on the ground. The wordcount police say go with the shorter
version, so youre just going to have
to take my word for some of this.
We had a few establishments
earmarked as appropriate for review
for this lunchtime only on trying to
book a table it turns that one after
another thwarts us. The one to the
south that only opens 3 evenings per
week, one to the east which doesnt
open until later in the month, one
to the north which, it turns out, is
closed for a private function today

01463 235 995

and then finally a new-ish Indian

place that is nearby, so we drive
there - only to find it closed.
A tiny ching in the back of the
back of my mind remembers a
hotel tucked away somewhere to
the south or east of the city, that I
cant ever remember the name of
but am sure Ive driven past a couple
of times in a couple of decades. So
we follow our noses and drive in that
general direction until we pleasingly
come across a signpost that points
us there. Hooray for the ching!
On the outside it is a little Fawlty
Towers but inside rather more
Grand Budapest Hotel. Everything
is elegant and quiet and calm and
efficient, and very friendly and warm
and comfortable. Robert makes us
feel very welcome hes running
on that most magical of fuels,
adrenaline and joy, as can only be
provided by having a newborn and
it rubs off nicely. Eileen Fraser (the
proprietor) pops in to say hello, again
providing a very attentive, personal
welcome. Nice.

My sylph-like dining partner, decked

out in striking red and black, draws
comments but everywhere we go
(and, I resentfully notice, on social
media) while I silently seethe from the
lack of attention. My mother always
said if you want to be seen, dont
stand beside a floodlight but then
she never made much sense anyway.
We are the sole diners out here
in the conservatory there is a
party of 40 being looked after in a
function room, we are told. There is
no evidence of this at all that is,
until a great burst of applause rings
out just as I am taking a cheeky swig
from the cream jug over dessert.
The surprise causes me to laugh
whilst imbibing and it all ends up very
undignified - watering eyes, dribble of
cream from the nose, you know the
sort of thing. You dont? Oh, well, er
Our choices of starter are quite
extensively debated - you cant just
choose without considering your
main, eh? Then theres what did
we have last time etc - reviewing
is very vexing sometimes

Steamed Fresh Mussels with White

Wine & Chives, and Kiwi & Pineapple
Salad with Mango Sauce are called
for and pretty swiftly arrive.
The mussels look terrific - even
and open and plump and warm sweetened by the chives & wine. They
are something of an addiction and
declared most excellent between
avid swallows. Big tick.
Smart bamboo screens cover off
parts of the room, putting me in mind
of Tarantinos Kill Bill and the
ber-finely diced kiwi and pineapple
only serves to conjure up more
images of katana-wielding ninjas.
They are sweet and tart by turns and
augmented by what is described as
mango sauce but is so beautifully
intense it comes over all passion
fruit. Actual yum.
Mains. Often full of bluff and bluster,
all boxing-ring announcers and
inflated egos. More often upstaged
by the more agile starters. Not today.

Desserts, Ive had a few but then
again too few to mention Actually
its too many to mention. Mine was
a childhood where, when asked
Lemon Meringue Pie or Trifle?,
the answer was always yes. My
compadre, on the other hand, has
always been one to skip straight
to the liquers and cigars. Different
strokes. We choose well Lemon
Roulade with Raspberry Sauce (who
wouldnt, I asks ye?) and Toffee
Praline Cheesecake with Toffee
Sauce. The latter is certainly nice a subtle variety of textures and taste
with a sauce slightly more toffee than
expected - the former, on the other
hand, is a triumph. Honestly, If you
give me a jug of cream and a bit of
sugar, my mind can make the rest up
but some desserts fly a little closer
to the sun. A light as meringue as
you could wish for with fluff and bite
and chew; a tart dart of lemon and
a sharp rap of raspberry underneath.
Rather great.
Which sums our lunch up quite
succinctly. Like Brief Encounter, a
pleasantly unscheduled affair. Go.

Keyless Cool...

the Yale Real Living NFC Deadbolt.

Want to live in a secure future? Course you do. Love your smartphone? Course you
do. So what could be better than this latest innovation from Yale - using near eld
communication to oer you a keyless entry system to your home?
No more fumbling around in the dark to nd the right key, just pop on your (Android
only so far) phone, open the Yale Digital Keys app, swipe the phone and - hey presto
- you re in.
What if your phone s out of juice? Well then, you ll have to use the old-futuristic
version and key a code into the lock s capacitive touchscreen instead. Zammo.
Want to let someone else in while you re away? No probs - simply send them a key .
You can make unlimited key users. Want to stop them from getting back in again?
Just revoke it. Peasy.
There s no vulnerable cylinder to pick and if the batteries should drain (and it gives
you fair warning), you can simply touch the terminals at the base with a 9v battery.
And, even better, the Yale Real Living NFC Deadbolt is a drop-in replacement for a
standard deadbolt lock - so it s an easy tting. Jubbly.
The Yale Real Living NFC Deadlock is due to be available very soon (out now in the U.S.) expected to sellat
between 150250.
