The journal on The impact of classroom technology on student behaviour by

Angeline M. Lavin, Leon Korte and Thomas L. Davies of University Of South Dakota is the
second journal that I chose. It is one of the journals in Journal of Technology Research.
Based on my reading on the journal, it is a research on the ineffective use of technology on
the students achievements towards their learning. The objective of the research is to
examine whether the use of technology in classroom impacts students behaviour as well as
students perceptions of their own learning and their academic achievements. The research
concludes the results of a survey which suggest that adding technology in courses where it
is not currently used is likely to have a positive and active impact on students perceptions
and behaviours in their learning.
The survey on the research was done in a medium sized Midwestern university and
the students taking various business classes. Then the survey given in that selected class,
instructors or lecturers. The students were selected on their basis of their rank, varying
degrees of technologies proficiency and usage, discipline and gender in order to provide a
valid and reliable result of survey. Classes chosen were included those at first year, second
year, junior level, senior level and graduate level.
The survey questions were based on three different parts of evaluation which were
survey on the use of technology moderately or extensively in the classroom, less use of
technology in the classroom and whether addition technology usage in the classroom would
impact the students behaviours. The survey also included numerous demographic questions
to facilitate analysis of the responses. Apart from that, the survey conducted through
interviews among the students and the instructors or lecturers. The survey was administered
near the beginning of last years fall semester.
In the survey finding, technology tends to have a meaningful impact on student
preparation for class, attentiveness, participation, and student learning skill, their desire to
take additional methods or learning aids. In the result finding in Table 1, the responses
shown that the students anticipate that the use of technology in the classroom would have
two sides of impacts which lead to the positive and negative impacts. Students feel that it
has positive impact on the amount of time they study for class, the quantity of notes that they
have to copy, the amount of time to study for exams or quizzes, their overall attendance for
the class as well as their appreciation for the lecturers effort in the class. In the other words,
the use of technology in the class may help students to use time wisely and learn smartly

and the lecturers are making full use of the technology to the max in presenting the lesson.
The addition of technology would have an overall positive impact on their behaviours. On the
other negative side of the use of technology, students feel that the depending on the
technology may make the teaching so easier and less effort shown in the lecturers
behaviours towards the class and the presentation.
In contrast, students responses indicate that the less use or the loss of technology in
the class according to the students would not appear to have a negative impact on all aspect
of students behaviours. In the other words, the additions of technology or the less use of
technology is not perceived to have a meaningful impact on the students behaviours.
The study is not meant to determine how effective technology was in helping
students learn or which technology might be most effective. Rather this study is focused on
students perceptions or opinions regarding technology usage and how adding technology to
the class might impact on the students behaviours. The result suggest that students taking
business classes at this Midwestern University perceive that technology use in the
classroom does indeed have an overall positive impact. While technology enhancement may
not be necessary appropriate for all classroom situation, subject matter and students
background.
To conclude, the study results suggest that the use of technology or not in the class
would have the impacts on the students behaviours whether in the term of positive or
negative impacts. Lecturers and students who feel that comfortable to use technology and
find that it enhances their teaching and learning should continue to incorporate it in their
classes. However, it must be noted that technology for what it is, a tool which can have a
positive impact on students behaviours and perceptions when used appropriately.
