FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Part 1) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized
Shipbuilding Sectional Committee had been approved by the Transport Engineering Division Council.
This standard (Part 1) lays down requirements for the drinking water connection
another ship or from a land distribution system.
Part 2 of this standard covers components

of filling connection

for attachment

by the

of piping from

for drinking water tanks.

In order to achieve harmony with the international practices, this standards is based on IS0 5620-1:1992
Shipbuilding and marine structure - Filling connection for drinking water tanks, Part 1 : General requirement
published by international Organization for Standardization.
The requirements
concerned.

of the Statutory Authorities

are to be complied with as may be applicable to the individual

ship

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,
observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS 2: 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). The number of significant places retained in the
rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

SHIPBUILDING - FILLING CONNECTION
FOR DRINKING WATER TANKS
PART 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

1 SCOPE
1.1 This standard (Part 1) specifies the principle
requirements, the composition and the designation of
the complete
filling
connection
and gives a
recommendation
for the installation aboard ship.
1.2 Details for the components ofthis filling connection
are given in Part 2 of this standard; both for the
distribution system and for the ship.
1.3 The general rules for drinking water distribution
systems fall within the competence of national port
authorities and are outside the scope of this standard.

connection for drinking water
tanks: Part 2 Components

3 FIELD OF APPLICATION
This connection safeguards drinking water tanks from
being filled with any other fluid. Additionally
it
safeguards the supply piping of the drinking water from
contamination
by any other liquids.
4 GENERALREQUIREMENTS
4.1 Connection

Principle

The connection

is carried

out by means of special

watering flanges. A flange shall be fitted to the ships

piping (flange B) and a second one (flange A) to the
piping or hose line from the drinking water supply
source at which the ships watering (flange B) shall be
provided with a blind (flange C) (see Fig. 1j.
4.2 Flange Connection
4.2.1 The watering flange A, B and C shall have a
special 5 screw connection,
according
to the
dimensions as given in Fig. 2.
4.2.2 The nominal diameter of flanges connection
piping shall be DN 65.

and

4.2.3 The nominal pressure of flanges connection

piping shall be PN 16.

and

4.3 Securing of Connection and Main Dimensions

To prevent unauthorised access to the connection on
the ship the blind flange C shall be secured by a
corrosion-resistant padlock which is fitted to a securing
bolt at the lower part of the connection, as shown in
Fig. 3.
4.4 Packing
A gasket of Neoprene rubber with suitable hardness
be used for drinking water systems and shall be fitted
to the ship watering flange B.
4.5 Materials and Finish
4.5.1 The flange connection shall be made ofweldable
structural steel conforming to Grade A of IS 2062.
4.5.2 Corrosion protection shall be obtained by hot
galvanizing in accordance with IS 4759 or by other
approved coating which would not constitute a health
hazard.
5 COMJ?OSITION
5.1 Components
The composition (code letter Z) of the ship piping
connection shall be as given in Fig. 3 consisting of
components as listed in Table 1.

7 INSTALLATION

Normally filling connection is given with a stand pipe

on the deck as shown in Fig. 4. However, where it is not
advisable because of operational reasons, a flush deck
connection may be acceptable.

The ship flange connection should be installed in a

suspended position as shown in Fig. 4. The use of a
bent pipe is recommended.
