DAY 1: JANUARY 20, 2015

COMPANY 1: NATIONAL GRID OF THE PHILIPPINES (NGCP)

A. Company Name: National Grid Corporation of the Philippines
B. Brief profile of the company:
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has the crucial
task of delivering safe and reliable electricity throughout the archipelago. It all
started in 2008 when the consortium of Monte Oro Grid Resources Corporation,
Calaca High Power Corporation, and State Grid Corporation of China won the
franchise to operate, maintain, and further expand the power grid in the biggest
government auction conducted in efforts to reform the local power sector.
C. Nature of the Company: Power Industry (Transmission)
D. Observation:
I have observed that their equipment and facilities are well maintained,
and is very neat. Everyone inside which includes the guards are approachable
and is also kind that if they see you around, they always give a smile and that
they even served us a snacks. All the personnel are well skilled that they
explained everything to us briefly.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
During our class in Electrical Transmission and Distribution, our instructor
always emphasize on how electrical transmission works and how to calculate the
power flowing through it and with the help of our previous Field Trip, I am very
thankful that they give us the chance to see how the transmission of electricity
really works.

COMPANY 2: SAN ROQUE DAM POWER STATION

A. Company Name: San Roque Dam Power Station

B. Brief profile of the company:
The San Roque Dam, operated under San Roque Multipurpose Project
(SRMP) is a 200 meters tall, 1.2 kilometer long embankment dam on the Agno
River.

It

spans

the

municipalities

of San

Manuel and San

Nicolas,

Pangasinan and is nearly 200 km north of Metro Manila.

The dam impounds a reservoir with a surface area of about 12.8 square
kilometers extending North into the municipality of Itogon, Benguet. A gated
spillway protects the dam from overtopping. Each wet season, the run-off is
stored for later release via water turbines to generate power and irrigate crops.
Agno River is the third largest river in the Philippines with a total length of
221 kilometers and a drainage basin at the Project site of 1,225 square
kilometers. The river originates in the Cordillera Mountains, initially flows from
north to south, divides into several channels in the flat central plain of Luzon and
meanders westerly through the provinces of Pangasinan and Tarlac before
emptying into the Lingayen Gulf.
C. Nature of the Company: Hydro Power Plant
D. Observation:
The company itself has strict security but still the personnel which are in
there were also kind. There are yellow lines where they told us not to go beyond
and all of the equipment used are well maintained and labeled.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
Before, I just have the theory on how these Hydro Plant works but with our
fieldtrip, the personnel stated on how big really is the turbine that the water was
to turn in order that electricity be produced and also told us that the main purpose
of hydro plant is for irrigation.

DAY 2: JANUARY 21, 2015

COMPANY NO 1: BATAAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
A. Company Name: Bataan Nuclear Power Plant

B. Brief profile of the company:

Bataan Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power plant, completed but
never fueled, on Bataan Peninsula, 100 kilometers (62 mi) west of Manila in
the Philippines. It is located on a 3.57 square kilometer government reservation
at Napot Point in Morong, Bataan. It was the Philippines' only attempt at building
a nuclear power plant.
C. Nature of the Company: Power Industry ( Generation)
D. Observation:
I observed that despite never having been commissioned to use, the plant
has remained intact and well maintained, including the nuclear reactor. They are
ought to maintain it for the Government actually give funds for its maintenance. It
is well-designed compared to other nuclear plant like the Chernobyl and
Fukishima Nuclear power plant.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
Nuclear fission occurs when a neutron collides with a nucleus of a large
atom such as Uranium and is absorbed into it causing the nucleus to become
unstable and thus split into two smaller more stable atoms with the release of
more neutrons and a considerable amount of energy. The Fission produces
radioactive materials thus making it risky to enter this generation system but
despite we have our immunity on radioactivity not exceeding it every year we can
still work on such environment.

COMPANY 2: LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT AUTHORITY

A. Company Name: Light Rail Transit Authority (LRT)
B. Brief profile of the company:
The Light Rail Transit Authority is recognized as the premiere rail transit in
the country providing reliable, efficient, dependable, and environment-friendly
mass rail services to all residents of Metro Manila. LRTA is a wholly owned
government corporation created on July 12, 1980 under Executive Order (EO)
No. 603, as amended by EO No. 830 dated September 1982, and EO No. 210
dated July 7, 1987. The LRTA is primarily responsible for the construction,
operation, maintenance and/or lease of light rail transit systems in the
Philippines.
A pioneer of the industry since 1984, LRTA has become the country's
prime mover in the rail transport sector serving the needs of millions of Filipinos
by exploring avenues where the LRT system could continuously provide efficient
transport services while promoting economy and efficiency of operations.
C. Nature of the Company: Transportation
D. Observation:
Throughout our tour in the LRT line 2, I observed that they use SCADA as
their control and monitoring system. The train is unmanned and it is driven at the
Operation Control System (OCC). OCC allows monitoring of all rolling stocks all
the time. The stabling yard is evidently well organized and systematic.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
The concept of voltage conversion is observed in the LRT 2. The supply
line of the train uses high AC voltage. The train is powered by a dc voltage thus
inside the train is a rectifier to convert the ac voltage to dc voltage.

DAY 3: JANUARY 22, 2015

COMPANY 1: MAKBAN GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
A. Company Name: Makban Geothermal Power Plant
B. Brief profile of the company:
Gifted with pristine white beaches and luscious green forests, the Bataan
Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) sits at the tip of a 389 hectare protected land at
Napot Point, Morong, Bataan. It is the only erected commercial nuclear power
station within the ASEAN countries.
The National Power Corporation was mandated by law to preserve and
maintain this nuclear plant. It has instituted procedures and programs to keep the
aesthetic attributes of BNPP. The craftsmen of this law envisioned that
somewhere in the future, this sleeping massive undertaking of the government
may resurrect, and be able to provide safe, clean, reliable and cheap energy,
while at the same time steering the nation towards economic and technological
advancement.
Considered to be one among the robustly-built nuclear power station in
the world, and more advance in design and younger than more than half of the
operating nuclear power plants in the United States of America, the BNPP was
designed to withstand the highest postulated earthquake in the Luzon island at
ground acceleration value of 0.4G or Intensity 8 in the Richter Scale. At 18
meters above sea level ground elevation, the BNPP plant site is well protected
against tidal waves and tsunamis. It can sustain operation even if a Fukushima
Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant-like tsunami incident of March 11, 2011 happened
at this site.
If the plant had operated, its 623 MW electrical capacity could have
provided at least 10% of the present power requirements for the Luzon grid. It
could have started the nuclear regime in the country which can bring the
Philippine economy at greater heights, like Korea or Taiwan, perhaps.
The plant was almost complete in 1984 and 100% of plant equipment and
systems had passed the one-year long Hot Functional Tests that was conducted
then. It was also during this said test that the plant was able to generate 5 MW
of electricity using the heat from the Nuclear Steam Supply System but without

nuclear fuel. This refutes the statement being circulated that this plant was
completely built but has never generated a single watt of electricity.
BNPP was about 98% complete in February 1984, and in June 1985
public hearings were set to be conducted for the Operating License of BNPP as
requirement prior to initial nuclear fuel loading to the nuclear reactor. This is in
preparation for the commercial operation of the plant.
The IAEA as the worlds advisory body to utilities on the safe operation of
a nuclear power plants has inspected BNPP twice, the IAEA Operational Safety
Analysis Review Team (OSART) I and II (July 1984 and February 1985,
respectively). Although it identified issues and made recommendations, the IAEA
said the plants construction met international standards. After the second
inspection, the IAEA said that the plant was ready to receive fuel and begin startup testing for its commercial operation.
C. Nature of the Company: Power Industry (Generation)
D. Observation:
The plant is named Makban because of it is located between mountains
Makiling and Banahaw. In our way to the said power plant, I have observed that
there were so many pipes all over the places which is said to be carrying water.
They were so strict on the time and schedule. Inside the plant, safety and
neatness are strictly observed. The facilities inside are well maintained and their
employees are capable and well trained.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
The pipes carry water for the plant to use for the steam. Inside the plant
they told us that they actually have a total of three plants inside the vicinity. The
geothermal power plant utilizes heat energy of earth to generate steam where
the generated steam is utilized to rotate the turbine to produce electricity.

COMPANY 2: PENINSULA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INC (PENELCO)

A. Company Name: Peninsula Electric Cooperative, Inc
B. Brief profile of the company:
Ang PENELCO (Peninsula Electric Cooperative, Inc.) ay isang samahan
na itinatag para sa pangangailangang pang-elektrisidad ng mga kasapi at
mamimili nito. Ito ay itinatag at narehistro sa NEA (National Electrification
Administration) noong ika-10 ng Abril 1990 sa ilalim ng kapangyarihan ng PD
269.
C. Nature of the Company: Power Generation
D. Observation:
I have learned that PENELCO is the most outstanding distribution electric
company in the Philippines because they uses more advance facilities. They
were able to transmit or rather nearly they will be able to light the whole
peninsula and they are able to locate the lines through the use of the SCADA.
The employees are very nice that they gave us snacks.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a system operating
with coded signals over communication channels so as to provide control of
remote equipment (using typically one communication channel per remote
station). Penelco uses SCADA to monitor line faults and for easier
troubleshooting.

DAY 4: JANUARY 23, 2015

COMPANY 1: FUJI HAYA ELECTRIC CORPORATION OF THE PHILIPPINES
A. Company Name: Fuji Haya Electric Corporation of the Philippines
B. Brief profile of the company:
Joint venture and technical licensing agreement signed in Tokyo between
HAYA Electrical Industries and FUJI ELECTRIC CO., LTD Appointed as Partner
Panel Builder of Schneider Electric (Philippines) Inc. Certified by the Philippine
Bureau of Product Standards as a qualified manufacturer of Molded Case Circuit
Breaker with PS mark.
C. Nature of the Company: Electrical Industry
D. Observation:
My very first impression to this company and the personnel inside is that
they were so kind. I did not know which is which because the equipment have no
labels but through our guiding personnel we are able to understand how these
equipment works.
E. Reflections on a specific concept and theory:
I have an idea on how to make disconnecting switches, switchgears,
relays and etc.

Lesson Learned:
During our Educational Tour, I have learned that:

Safety must be the priority when working in the field. It is important because of
the nature of our field, which involves high voltages, short circuit currents, faulty
wiring and other similar occurrences. That is why we should always wear
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

This educational tour is a way for us students to learn how the generation of
electricity from coal, geothermal, nuclear and water works. On how the
distribution of electricity and how they make protective devices.

The SCADA is an advance way on how to detect faults across the transmission
and distribution system.

That being an Electrical Engineer is not hard as long as you enjoy your working
environment, because I can see the Engineers weve came from that they enjoy
what they are doing and they are very happy. Since Im an electrical engineering
student it is helpful for me to see what is in my field and not just theories that my
professors are teaching.
