Mustafa Kemal Pasha (Atatrk) created the modern Turkish Republic. His
concept was to replace the Ottoman Empire, which was multicultural, saw
itself as the protector of Sunni Muslims (several of the last Ottoman rulers
emphasized their traditional claim to the Caliphate), imperial and religious.
The Turkish republic was to be the country of its citizens, national, secular,
and popular. However, it also was to be revolutionary in the sense that
Atatrk overturned many aspects of society and did so very quickly. And
Statist in that the State would be tightly run. In this sense, Atatrk was a
strong ruler; the people did not really play the kind of role one might
expect in a democracy.
Atatrks reforms created a Turkish Republic that came close to being
democratic. The Turkish Republic has had issues with Kurdish nationalism,
and the Army has intervened to ensure the continuation of democracy.
In the past decade, the ruling AKP (Justice and Development party)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justice_and_Development_Party_%28Turkey%29
has compromised Turkish democracy. Their leader, Recep Tayyib Erdogan,
arranged for himself to be elected President and for the center of power to
devolve to the President; while he was Prime Minister the President was
largely ceremonial. His government has imprisoned journalists, army, and
many others, has worked against the popular Fethullah Glen movement,
and has used religious motifs, anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist screeds, and raw
power to centralize authority and squash possible opposition. One could
even say that he is dismantling Kemalism as well as even erasing Atatrks
name. For example, he is building a new airport in Istanbul, and closing the
old one. The old airport was named after Atatrk; the new one is not.

The Six Arrows emblem is very well known. Looking for images, I found many
in which alternatives to Kemalism replace the traditional Six Arrows.

FAMOUS SAYINGS OF ATATURK

Yurtta sulh, cihanda sulh iin alyoruz. We work for peace at home, peace
in the world."
Ataturk said this in 1931. Today more often the Turkish Baris replaces
Arabic-sourced sulh. But Arabic-sourced Dunya replaces CIhan.
The correct pronunciation is Yurtta barish dunyada barish.

"Egemenlik, kaytsz artsz Milletindir"

"Sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the Nation" -- This is inscribed in the
National Assembly building.

Turkish: Ne mutlu Trkm diyene.

(English: How happy is he/she who calls himself/herself a Turk.)
