SRNSrelocationisaprocedureusedduringmobilityscenarioswhenControloftheServingRadioNetwork
Subsystem(SRNS)ischangedtoanotherRadioNetworkSubsystem(RNS)

RadioNetworkSubsystem(RNS):TheRNScontrolstheallocationandreleaseofradioresourcesto
establishaconnectionbetweenaUEandtheUTRAN.
AsingleUEmaybeassociatedwithoneormoreRadioAccessBearers(RABs).ForinstanceaUEmay
simultaneouslyuseoneRABforvoiceandoneRABforapacketcall.
RadioAccessBearer(RAB):RABisalogicalconnectionbetweentheUEandtheUMSC/SGSN.
IuBearer:TheconnectionbetweentheRNCandtheCorenetworkisreferredtoastheIubearer.
RadioBearer(RB):TheconnectionbetweentheRNCandtheUEisreferredtoastheRadioBearer(RB).

DuringHardHandoverwhentheUEmovesawayfromtheareathatiscoveredbyoneRNStoanewRNS,
thereisarequirementtoperformaninterRNChandoverbetweentheServingRNC(SRNC)totheTarget
RNC(RNCT)ofthenewRNS.
TherearetwowaystochangetheServingRNC:
OnepossibilityisthattheTargetRNCmayimmediatelybecometheServingRNCreferredasthe
CombinedHardHandoverandSRNSRelocationProcedure
IntheothercaseknownastheServingRNSRelocationProceduretheuserplanefromtheSRNC
extendstotheTargetRNC,inthissituationtheTargetRNCisreferredastheDriftRNC.TheInterface
betweentheServingandtheDriftRNCistheIurinterfacedescribedinthe3GPPTS25.420.

Iftheroutingareaischanged,thisprocedureisfollowedbyanIntraSGSNRoutingArea
Updateprocedure.TheSGSNdetectsanIntraSGSNroutingareaupdatebynoticingthatitalso

BeforetheSRNSRelocationprocedureandRAupdate,theUEisregisteredintheoldSGSN.Thesource
RNCisactingasaservingRNC(SRNC).

stateCONNECTEDModetowardsthenewSGSN,andthetargetRNCisactingastheservingRNC.
CombinedHardHandoverandSRNSRelocationProcedure
ThisprocedureisonlyperformedforanUEinCONNECTEDstateincasetheIurinterfaceisnotavailable.
TheCombinedHardHandoverandSRNSRelocationprocedureisusedtomovetheconnectionbetweenthe
RANandtheCNforthesourceSRNCtotheRANforthetargetRNC,whileperformingahardhandover
decidedbytheRAN.
Intheprocedure,theIulinksarerelocated.
IfthetargetRNCisconnectedtothesameSGSNasthesourceSRNC,anIntraSGSNSRNS
Relocationprocedureisperformed.
Iftheroutingareaischanged,thisprocedureisfollowedbyanIntraSGSNRoutingArea
Updateprocedure.TheSGSNdetectsthatitisanintraSGSNroutingareaupdatebynoticing
thatitalsohandlestheoldRA.Inthiscase,theSGSNhasthenecessaryinformationaboutthe
UEandthereisnoneedtoinformtheHLRaboutthenewUElocation.
IfthetargetRNCisconnectedtoadifferentSGSNthanthesourceSRNC,anInterSGSNSRNS
Relocationprocedureisperformed.ThisprocedureisfollowedbyanInterSGSNRoutingArea
Updateprocedure.
