Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FROM THE PASTOR:

Where do we meet God? It is my rm conviction that
we have the potential to experience God virtually all the time
in every moment of our lives. In reality, those moments are
recognized all too infrequently. Now, I can only reect on my
own life, but I know that I have had some powerful moments
of meeting God. It is such experiences that encourage me to
be ever more a%entive to Gods presence in my life to look
for Him.
Where have you met God? What have you sought to
do that opens such a possibility? One occasion that helps so
many people do this is a retreat a time to get away from our
regular daily routine and open our minds and hearts to God.
Every year, when I go to Haiti, I experience God powerfully,
and so that pilgrimage is an important retreat for me. Again
and again, members of our parish have found the Christ
Renews His Parish (CRHP) experience to be an important
encounter with God. These CRHP Retreats (we say chirp
retreats) are peer-led and a powerful experience of meeting
God.
If you havent gone on one, why havent you? They
take place right here in our own parish and involves one
weekend that can change your life. As I write that, I realize it
might sound a li%le scary (I dont want to become some kind of
holy roller!). But I will tell you that to meet God is to
experience a freedom and joy that is beyond measure.
So, look for the courage to say yes when you hear
the next invitation. Gods generosity can never be outdone.
Let Him give Himself to you. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is
knocking at your door. Will you have the courage to open it?
Peace and Love,
Fr. Dan

LENTEN REGULATIONS

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older,

who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day,
one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sucient to maintain
strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but
together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between
meals is not permi$ed, but liquids, including milk and juices, are
allowed.
Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older.
On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health
or ability to work would be seriously aected, the law does not
oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish
priest should be consulted.
Ash Wednesday, February 18, and Good Friday, April 3,
are days of fast and abstinence. All the Fridays of Lent are days of
abstinence.
Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should
undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of

Catechist of the Week

Our Catechist of the Week is Joanne Rosel, who is a 2nd grade

catechist in our elementary program this year. This is Joannes
fourth year working as a catechist, and she has previously worked
with our Life Teen and EDGE youth. Joanne is married and has two
children. She works as a pharmaceutical representative and enjoys
running road races and cooking in her spare time. In answer to the
question of why she became a catechist, Joanne replied, I a!ended
Christ Renews His Parish renewal weekend 19 and strengthened
my faith and resolve to get more involved in the outreach
programs at St. Michael. Her favorite topic to learn about as a
child in Catholic school was Mary and the saints, and she was inspired by how powerful their faith was. Joannes favorite Scripture
verse is from St. Pauls le!er to the Corinthians: Let he who feels
that his is standing upright, watch out lest he fall. Two things she
would like her 2nd graders to take away from their year in her
group are Jesus loves you no ma!er what! Talk to Jesus every day,
and He will listen to you. Say a prayer every day! To encourage a
person to become a catechist, Joanne would tell them, Its like
most things you put your heart and energy into. Youll get more
out of it than you put into it! Its very rewarding!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN

BECOMING CATHOLIC ?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA) is a ministry for those
who are not baptized or who have
been baptized in another faith

MARRIAGE MOMENTS
Lent begins this Wednesday.
Sure, celebrate Mardi Gras on Tuesday but start thinking
now of a meaningful Lenten practice. Why not choose at
least one penance that both of you will do. It can
reinforce your decision and bond you in a common effort.

PARENTING POINTERS:
Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which begins Lent.
But before Lent comes, Tuesday is Mardi Gras.
I guess it is human nature to want to splurge before
taking on a sacrifice. Decide a family penance for Lent,
but plan a family treat for Tuesday.

QUESTION for the upcoming WEEK:

The Gospel for next week, February 22, the First Sunday of Lent, is
Mark 1:12-15 (Jesus temptation and the call to conversion).
As you read the Scriptures this week, you may want to think about the
following questions:
Adults: When or how could you step away from your daily
responsibilities to renew yourself, so that you can do a better job of
following in the footsteps of Jesus?
Children: What good habit could you work on during Lent so you
could grow closer to God?
From Heritage of Faith, by Jo Rotunno

It is recommended that you contact the Baptism

Coordinator, Karen Neme$, early so godparents and
family can plan to a!end. To register for the parish,
please a!end a newcomers orientation meeting on the
second Tuesday of each month at 7 PM or the fourth
Sunday of the month after the 11:15 AM Mass.
For further information,
PLEASE CONTACT Karen Neme! at 527-1037 x 49 or

Join the more than 1,000 St. Michael parishioners who have completed one of the parish's
most successful adult faith formation programs!
For two days, men and women take the time to reflect on how they have been able to apply
faith and scripture to deal with the very real problems and challenges that come with daily living.
Chances are you will find yourself inspired, moved, and most importantly, challenged to explore the
role of faith in your own personal situation. No matter where you are in your personal faith journey, you will end up
celebrating the weekend where God meets you where you are!

Haiti Corner
Sponsors now have the opportunity to
send a letter to their Haitian child. You
can deposit your letter in the box in the Commons area labeled
"Letters to Haiti." As usual, the mail should be no larger than
a business letter and may only contain small enclosures.
Family pictures or pictures colored by children are some
suggestions that work well, but you can choose anything that
means something to you. Please include your name and the
Haitian child's name on the outside of the envelope.
ALL LETTERS ARE TO BE WRITTEN IN FRENCH.
The website www.translate.google.com is a user-friendly site
that will translate the document from English to French at the
touch of a button. The letters will be taken by the group
leaving in February. Final date for dropping off mail is
February 18th (Ash Wednesday).
We thank you all for your generous support of this program
that has such an impact on the children of Dos Palais.

Introducing Online Giving!

Our parish now
uses an Online Giving system
called WeShare.
This will allow you to make your donations without writing a

payment, allocate dierent amounts for our dierent collections,
and view complete, accurate nancial records at any time. It saves
all of us time and is a win-win for our parish!
Those who wish to continue to use our traditional methods of
oering, including envelopes and autodraft, may do so. However,
we ask that you prayerfully consider Online Giving. If you would
like to enroll, please visit h#ps:/saintmikes.weshareonline.org.
If you have any questions about the program or about se!ing up
your account, don't hesitate to call our parish oce (804-527-1037).
We are in need of more SCRIP
Ministry volunteers for the table
sales before and after the 7:45, 9:15 & 11:15 morning Masses which is a
1-hour commitment total (30 minutes before and after Mass).
We have openings for the 7:45 AM Mass and could use more help at
other Masses, as well. Additionally we have a need for helping with
the sales of Express SCRIP (only Food Lion, Martins, and Wal-mart
cards). This is a 15-min. shift after the 9:15 and 11:15 morning Masses.

Parishioners in Need!
Many of you know Marc and Joy Elliott. The Elliotts have been trying to rent a
house. Because of Joy's serious health issues (Parkinson's Disease, Muscular
Dystrophy, asthma, and other allergies), they need a pet-friendly, ranch style
home that is accessible and has no carpeting. After months of hunting, they
realized that they might have to try and purchase a home. With that in mind, they
have set up a GoFundMe account with the hope of raising enough money to
make that happen. To learn more and to help, please go to:

Hi, my name is Alex Phillips, and I am

working on my Girl Scout Silver Award.
I am collecting books for
Overby-Sheppard Elementary School.
The children there often don't have their
own books. I am lucky to have my own
books, so I want them to have the chance
to experience the joy of reading their own
books, too. I believe books can take a child to a be#er place
even if their situation isn't so great.
I would appreciate gently used or new books for ages 5 to 10.
There is a collection box in the Commons. Thank you!
