Cristian Gavrilescu-Architect of tall buildings

Born in Bucovina on the 29th April 1968 in the city Vatra Dornei,
district of Suceava, the architect Cristian Gavrilescu is one of the few
Romanian architects that established himself as a household name
across the ocean, in the United States of America and in the Middle East.

He graduated in 1994 the College of Architecture and Urbanism in

Bucharest, and in 1998 the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism Ion
Mincu. He has a master degree in architecture from the New York
University, U.S.A., in 2001- He worked between 1999 and 2003 for
Urban Achitects, New York, collaborating with some of the most famous
architects world wide like Charles Gwathmey and I.M. Pei For four
years, starting with 2005, he worked in London in the architectural
company KPF (www.gdarcht.com) with which he runs projects in the
USA and in Romania, both countries in which he is licensed as an
architect. He lives in New York, USA.
As architect of tall buildings he projected countless towers in the
Arab countries but also in Europe.

As after September 11 2001

the American companies became
reluctant to work again with the
Arab countries; Gavrilescu took
all the projects which architect
Pei had in the Middle East, where
was also included the Palm
Tower building in Dubai, building
of over 1000 meters height,
which should had been finalized
in 2012.

Cristian Gavrilescu was the

design project coordinator of the
Palm Tower- a building which will
overcome with 200 meters the
tallest building in the world at the
present , Burj Dubai.
The
Romanian
worked
at
projecting the giant in the same
team with famous specialists:
architect Leslie Robertson, the
one who draw World Trade
Center from New York or I.M. Pei,
father of the pyramid from
Louvres.
In Dubai he also worked on
projecting two towers with 50
floors, in Kuweit at one tower of
70 storeys, but in the last years
he has dedicated himself to some
projects in Romania, like the
Synevo Medical Center and the
Pipera
Office
Tower
from
Palm Tower

Bucharest, the Shopping Center

in Baia Mara and others.

Burjuman, a multifunctional complex with a mall, offices and

residences (down foto-interior mall), at which Cristian Gavrilescu
was the project manager for KPF International.

Gavrilescu never forgot to mention that the Romanian architecture

school is a very good school. I recommend it to all the ones who want
to become architects, we learn to draw by hand, abroad this is lost, they
draw only with the computer.
Im born in Bucovina and Ive always been excited of our popular
houses. The Village Museum should be for us the showroom from which
we chose our models. But is not like this. It makes me sad to see what
was built in Romania in the past years. I dont understand how the Norse
(but also the Latins and the Asians) have managed, not only to keep, but
also to inspire themselves from their past and to use traditional language
elements in the modern context, and we do not. The good part is that
more and more voices are starting to appear and signal this
phenomenon and that in some places, here and there, are constructed
quality homes. -stated Cristian Gavrilescu in an interview provided for
the newspaper Adevarul.
For the contribution at the analyze of tall buildings behavior at
external factors and contributions at optimal design in seismic areas, the
architect Cristian Gavrilescu was awarded in 2010 the title of "Doctor
Honoris Causa" of the Stefan cel Mare University in Suceava.
