Animal Aid
5 Best Campaigns

Heres a short interview

with Andrew Tyler,
director of Animal Aid

A warm welcome to our guests of honour Animal Aid at this

years VegfestUK Brighton!

Were delighted to be the special guests at this years Brighton

Vegfest, given that we are huge fans of the show and always look
forward to being part of it. Tim and all the Vegfest team have been
extraordinarily successful in creating a series of events that are a
great boon to the animal rights movement, while also appealing
to the general public because of the uplifting sense of fun that
characterises them!

Animal Aids Great Vegan Challenge is held every November and

continues to attract ever-increasing numbers of people who want
to give veganism a try. And the best news is that many stick with it!
You can take the Challenge if youre not vegan yourself or you can
encourage friends and family to take the Challenge.
Our Victims of Charity website highlights appalling, medically
worthless charity-funded animal experiments and has allowed
thousands of our supporters to take action against some of the
biggest funders of vivisection.

What you can expect from Animal Aid

at VegfestUK Brighton:
You will find the Animal Aid area just inside the main entrance, so
please drop by and say hello. We have an exhibition space where
you can learn all about our work and ways in which you can
become involved. There will be a cookery demo and a film show.
Our merchandise team will host an Animal Aid shop on the first
floor (stands H4&H8), where you will find a wonderful array of
vegan, cruelty-free goodies - and remember: you can order from
us online at any time via Animal Aids website. You can also claim
your 10 per cent members discount on all Animal Aid merchandise
purchased at Vegfest if you join up this weekend!

Heres a bit more about the Animal Aid

exhibition on the ground floor:

Our campaigning work is extremely varied, ranging from powerful,
agenda-setting undercover investigations, to lobbying MPs and
senior Whitehall officials. But we always need your help to spread
the word about our initiatives. We can put you in touch with likeminded animal advocates in your area or your local animal rights
group, give advice about how to start a social or campaigning
group, and suggest many other ways to help animals.

Our horse racing campaign continues to shake the industry,

through the production of hard-hitting reports on notorious
courses such as Cheltenham and Aintree. Our secretly filmed
images of an injured horse being shot by a vet at Doncaster
racecourse recently made front page news and provoked a major
industry debate. Please come and chat to us about how you can get
involved in this campaign.

Take a look (below) at our some of our

Come and chat with members of our Education team who, every
year, send out thousands of tailored education resources to
teachers all across the country. In addition, our incredible volunteer
school speaker network give around 600 school talks each year,
taking a message of compassion to many thousands of children. If
you think that you may be interested in becoming a school speaker,
please do come and chat to Mark, Karin or Elaine!

Our new website,, shows footage from

our investigations. A Government e-petition, calling for mandatory
CCTV in slaughterhouses, is central to this campaign. The goal is to
reach 100,000 signatures, thereby triggering a debate in parliament.
Youll be able to sign our CCTV petition at Vegfest, so please come
by and do so, and encourage your friends to do the same!
website helps you assess the animal credentials of
your existing MP, and to contact him or her directly. The site also
contains our five core General Election asks - a set of progressive
measures that, while they wont rid the world of animal abuse, will
alleviate the suffering of many animals. Please visit us to see how
your MP rates on our website!

We campaign against the shooting industry, using undercover

footage to reveal the true horrors of this bloodsport. Many
people are shocked to learn that nearly 50 million pheasants and
partridges are purpose-bred each year to be shot for sport.
We also campaign vigorously with help from local compassionate
people against wildlife culls. There have been a number of
successes along the way. Recently, for instance, United Utilities
in Warrington agreed to stop culling geese, and to use humane
alternatives instead.

And a bit about our history

Animal Aid was started by schoolteacher Jean Pink from her
Tonbridge kitchen table in 1977, and is now the largest animal rights
group in the UK.
I have been the director since 1996 and have seen enormous
change most notably the accelerating popularity of veganism
but also, in contrast, attempts by a commercial and political elite
to curb our activism on behalf of animals. Our movement has
adapted and outmanoeuvred every government crackdown, and
remains a formidable force and a voice for those who cannot speak
out for themselves the animals.
Andrew Tyler, Director, Animal Aid

Angie Belcher
Standup poet, comedy actor and writer,
equally at home headlining on the
standup circuit as in a posh tent in a
literature festival. Angie presents dirty
stanzas and awkward observations
about approaching 40 via Agnosticism, angry computers and
puppies. Her live work is fruity and not for the faint-hearted.

Luke Graves

Carl started performing standup in

2005 and quickly established himself
as one of the UKs most exciting young
comedians. His conversational, silly
sense of humour saw him win a host
of awards (Chortle Best Newcomer
2007, Leicester Mercury Comedian
of the Year 2007 among others) and
become a regular at the finest comedy

Writer, composer and comedian,

with writing and performing credits
including Never Mind the Buzzcocks,
Charlie Brookers Weekly Wipe on
BBC2, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does
Jake spent 3 years working on the
6Music Breakfast Show, writing,
performing and producing hourly
songs and sketches. He also wrote and
performed Pleased to Meet You for BBC Radio 4Extra, in which he
played a little old lady called Dora Dale. Who was pretty fruity.

Lukes easy-going, confident stage

presence creates a natural rapport
with the audience and a comfortable
atmosphere with crowds of all ages.
He tells stories and everyday observations with strong, regular
punchlines of a one-liner comic.

Chris Stokes
Chris playful and erudite standup
has seen him crop up on Daves One
Night Stand and intermittently on
BBC Radios 4 and 5Live. As well as
supporting the likes of Milton Jones,
Pete Firman and Stewart Francis on
several UK tours, Chris debut solo
show was awarded the Best Show
award at Daves Leicester Comedy
Festival 2012.

James Hately
Psychedelic revolutionary? Beard
on stilts? Whilst many standups put
reality under a microscope so we can
laugh at it from all angles, James takes
reality, melts it down, and moulds
it into something no more sensible.
Prepare to laugh and then scratch
your head wondering what just
happened. Magners Pub Comedian
of the Year finalist, and two times
performer at the Green Man festival.

Donal Coonan
Plant-eating Punchinello, described
by the Radio Times as like a strange
uncle. Come and be his niece/nephew
for 10 minutes.
Twitter @superdonal

Jim Daly
Jims been bringing his mix of jokes
and songs to audiences across
London since May 2012. Thankfully
a life of being a complete idiot prior
to May 2012 has provided plenty of
material. Golden Jester semi-finalist
in 2013, Jims supported the likes of
Doc Brown, Holly Walsh and Kevin

Gary Tro
Gary Tro (Bath Festival Best New Act
Finalist 2013) has fast become an
audience favourite on the London
comedy circuit and often performs
his playful, self-deprecating stories in
the countrys most prestigious clubs.

Joey Brannigan
Comedian, Poet & Writer (and Vegan!),
Joeys bringing with him a variety
of stories, poems & letters. Joeys
had successful shows at Leicester,
Nottingham & Birmingham Comedy
festivals and is no stranger to larger
stages, having opened for Simon
Evans and performing in theatres
nationally. He appears regularly at
Poetry Unplugged, Farrago and as
host/MC of Stage Fright.

Harriet Kemsley
Harriets featured on BBC3s Comedy
Marathon, BBC Radio 1s Comedy
Lounge and Alex Zanes Funny
Rotten Scoundrels for London Live.
Described as A quirky very funny
new stand-up (Time Out) and listed
by Rhod Gilbert as One of the top 10
comics to see (Mail on Sunday).

Michael Legge
Michaels performed globally even
supporting Dylan Moran in Moscow.
Hes also been tour support for Alexei
Sayle and Stewart Lee and he was
(quite frankly) the shining, shining star
of Stewarts Alternative Comedy Experience on Comedy Central.
Michael is the writer of his very own award-winning grumpy blog
and Do The Right Thing, the panel show podcast that hes the token
man in, won a Sony Award.

Mike Kelson
Vegetarian and animal rights campaigner
since school, Mike is a relative newcomer to
standup. Comedy appearances at clubs and
festivals in the last 2 years have helped hone
his act however. His cheeky style is a hit with
varied audiences.

Nathan Hudson
York based comedian and Hilarity Bites
finalist Nathan Hudson has played across the
globe consistently delighting crowds with his
funny, insightful and on-the-ball material.

Sonja Quita Doubleday

Exciting and ridiculous female comedian
who is a master at the surreal and physical
side of comedy. Regularly performing on the
alternative comedy circuit.

Will Setchell
A lost Scotsman who spent the last 5 years
gigging his way across the country before
finally finding himself in Manchester. His
comedy covers almost every topic, from
stories of childhood and traveling, to politics,
animal rights and occasionally Werner
Herzog. Shortlisted for the BBC new comedy
award in 2012.

Woods are two of the UKs
best comedy songwriters
and two of the UKs worst
allotment holders. Their
show Can You Dig It?
features a wheelbarrow-load
of comic ditties about trying,
and mostly failing, to grow
veg. Highlights include a
power ballad tribute to cuddly gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh, a
song about an evil pigeon called Derrick, and a rap battle between a
gardener and a slug.

Peter Antoniou
Peter is the Psychic Comedian (or
Comedium) fondling frontal lobes
and tickling funny bones. Using his
unique skills, hes able to reach inside
your mind and reveal things no one
could know about you.

One Man and his Beard

One Man And His Beard has over the last 5 years sung at many
protests including outside BBC Broadcasting House to help save
BBC6Music, Lobby for Libraries at Westminster Hall to help save
Libraries, Badger Protest outside Royal Courts Of Justice and Global
March For Elephants And Rhinos in Liverpool.

Ian Haywood
Ians honoured to play his piano
music to like-minded people again
after last years VegfestUK debut.
He hopes his music can empower
others in this evolution towards a
more compassionate world.
Since last year, hes completed his
2nd album The Beautiful Dream inspired by life and by the natural and spiritual world around us.
Ian looks forward to sharing music from this album with you along
with some of his jazz and boogie woogie piano.

The Phoenix Rose

The Phoenix Rose lead singer Jarvis Smith

wrote the new single, Sick & Tired, a call to
people who want an end to dictatorships
and manipulation, which are founding
causes for the state of our planet. Strong
idea, but as Jarvis believes, music is
the best way to spread powerful and determined messages in
a peaceful manner. Sick & Tired is a catalyst to make people
consider their world, and hopefully engages them to realise their
own capability in insisting change.

Acoustic singer-songwriter with

roots in metal, Shonalikas sound is
distinct. Having spent a childhood
immersed in gothic subculture before
expanding through Brightons vibrant
music scene, her style combines folk,
grunge and rock with a dynamic,
powerful vocal. Dark and at times
aggressive, her songs directly address
oft-ignored and difficult subject

Marianns a singer. She believes that

the music can bridge the soul and
the spiritual world. In her music, the
goal is meditation, mind relaxation
and focus on our deeper self and
letting it awaken.
Marianns been trained western
classical stile and has been learning
Indian vocal music from 2011. Her
teachers are the famous Gundecha
Brothers. From them shes learnt
the most ancient Indian music style
called Dhrupad.

Mitchell and Vincent

David Mitchell and Graham Vincent
are an acoustic duo based in Dorset
and Somerset who play lively
traditional music from the British
Isles on Fiddle and Guitar. Much
of their set is instrumental but
this is mixed in with a few broadly
traditional songs.

and have become experts in the hemp industry over the last 15
years. Henry Braham and Glynis Murray began growing hemp on
their farm in Devon for its fibre until they discovered the delicious
taste of the hemp seed and all of its amazing nutritional properties.
They began pressing the seeds for their Omega 3- rich oil and GOOD
OIL was born!
It took over 10 years to get GOOD OIL just right and its GOOD name
is well deserved as it has won praises from celebrity chefs such as
Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
The GOOD product family has now been extended to include
GOOD SEED, shelled hemp seeds, GOOD HEMP dairy alternative
and GOOD Hemp Protein. All of their products are suitable for
vegetarians and vegans and made from natural ingredients.
GOOD Hemp products make a delicious and healthy addition to

a vegan diet as they contain an almost perfect ratio of Omega 3

to Omega 6, which means it can be utilised in the best way by the
body. Hemp seeds are also rich in protein and contain all of the
essential amino acids. The tiny seeds contain minerals such as
magnesium and iron too!
Not only is hemp extremely healthy but it is also one of the most
sustainable plants on Earth. Hemp absorbs around twenty five
times the amount of carbon dioxide that trees do and it also
makes an excellent home for wildlife. Sounds pretty GOOD, right?
Products are available from Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose as well

Plamil Foods

Although many popular varieties of dairy free milky chocolate

are often marketed to children they contain more sugar than
most types of chocolate. At a time when the reduction of sugar is
recommended for good health reasons, most parents are looking
to reduce the amount consumed by the family and especially
their children. Fortunately this is now possible. A great tasting
alternative has been created.
Lots of This None of That is a scrumptious dairy free milky
chocolate bar that amazingly has reduced sugar. It is also gluten
and nut free. A 30g bar of Lots of This None of That still contains
less sugar than 20g of similar chocolate. Produced by Plamil, the
highest ranked Ethical chocolate manufacturer, Lots of This None
of That is made using renewable energy. This revolutionary new
bar is the future for dairy free chocolate. The cocoa is certified
under the UTZ Certified sustainability programme.
