After Muhammads (saw) marriage to Khadijah, there are no major events for

10 years

1.
2.

From the age of 25 to 35, theres not a lot major events in Muhammads life
Thats not to say absolutely nothing happened
1 This was the first 10 years of his marriage. He built a life with
Khadijah. The majority of their children were born in this period
2 The Prophet said, The best amongst you is the one who is the best
to his family. And I am the best to my family.
3 The Prophet would offer the fard prayers in the masjid, & then go
back home to pray the sunnah prayers with his family
4 After Salaat-al-Asr, he would go to visit the houses of his wives
5 One of his sunnah was that he would nap in the afternoon
During the Medinan years, the Prophet was not just an imam & a prophet, but
hes also the head of state hes running the entire Muslim state

Hed still go home & pray & spend time with his family
Kabah, the Baytullah, was pretty much starting to fall apart; There were lots of
wear and tear over the years

Back in those days, the Kabah was 6-7 arms length (6-7 meters)
Nowadays, its 3 times that size
The door of the Kabah was basically at grounds length at the time (very low)
The Kabah had been broken into.
Because all of Arabia considered the Baytullah to be very sacred, nobody would
dare violate it. Whatever public fund the people had (gold, silver, other
valuables), they would place it inside the Kabah because it was considered safe
(why would anyone violate a sacred place?)
The thieves looted the goods inside the Kabah
During that time, Makkah had several heavy rainstorms. Makkah had started to
flood
The walls of the Kabah had severe water damage, causing them to erode
They have to tear down the Kabah for the full renovation

That was a problem because the Kabah is such a sacred placed & because
people were very superstitious idol-worshipping people, they were reluctant to
tear down such a holy place
They were worried that if they tore down the Kabah, even if it was to put it back
together, they would be punished by the idols
So people just discussed the matter of tearing down & rebuilding the Kabah, but
nobody actually did anything. They simply talked because they were too afraid of
the possible consequences of tearing down the Kabah
Finally, the maternal uncle of Abdullah (father of Muhammad) was
Muhammads great-uncle. He stood up & said, Im gonna get this renovation
started. He grabbed one of the stones of the wall of the Kabah & removed it
from its place

When he removed the stone in its place & placed it into the ground, the stone flew
& lodges back into its place
People are already very nervous about reconstructing the Kabah, so when they
see the stone literally fly & lodge itself back, people freak out
The Quraysh took this as a sign from the Raab of this Bayt that they need to
approach the renovation carefully
They decide not to tear the Kabah down all at once. Theyre going to reconstruct
it piece at a time. They will take one wall down & fix it. Then theyll take down
another wall & fix it, one at a time
This stone flying back to its place is a sign that only pure can be put into the
reconstruction of the Kabah
This is important because a huge stream of their money was coming from
questionable income prostitution, selling wine, usury, interest, gambling, etc.
(haraam income)
We need to put only pure wealth into this reconstruction of the Kabah. There
should be no hint of the effects of alcohol, gambling, ribaa, etc. and were going to
invest that into the Kabah.
There was an abandoned & boarded-up well near the Kabah (not Zamzam)
A huge serpent burst out of that well & circled the Kabah. It was going up &
down the walls of the Kabah. The snake had a black head, black body, and a
white underbelly
1 It would hiss at anyone who would come near it & open its mouth
at the person
This was another sign for the mushrikoon on being careful in regards to the
reconstruction of the Kabah
The snake later receded, after the Quraysh made a pact on putting only pure
wealth into the Kabah
1 Another narration says that a huge bird, a condor, swooped in &
flew away with the snake in its claws
A fight broke out which family will renovate the Kabah?
Banu Adi, Banu Kilad, Banu Hashim were the major families in Makkah
Theyd take blood oaths (cut themselves & leave a bloody handprint on the
Kabah) We swear by this house, that WE will be the ones to restore this House.
Banu Adi & Banu Kilad ally up. Banu Hashim are the big dogs. Why dont we ally
together & defeat them? Then WE will get to fix the Kabah.
One of the senior leaders of Makkah, Walid bin Mughira said, Were all going
to do this together.
Each family will be given a portion of the Kabah that they will reconstruct. That
way, everyone has a stake.
Side with the door Banu Abd Munaf & Banu Zuhra
Between Al Hajirul Aswaad & Ruqnul Yemeni Banu Makhzun
Backside (opposite side of door of the Kabah dahrul Kabah) Banu Jummah
& Banu Saham
Side of Hijaar (where the hateem is original part of Kabah, a U shaped part)

Banu Adeeb bin Kabah

Now everybodys happy, because everybody gets to take a part in the
renovation, but theyre back in Square 1

Theyre still freaked out with the stone & snake incidents
One tribe would say to other, Alright, Bismillah, you go ahead & get started.
No, Bismillah you get started, the other tribes would reply
Theyre all holding the door open for each other, very courteous Masha Allah.
No, no, brother, you go ahead, Bismillah.
No, no, you go ahead!
No, please you first.
Just a while ago they were taking blood oaths & ready to bust some skulls to get
to be able to renovate the Kabah
Walid goes, Oof, Ill start.
He takes a hammer/axe & breaks a chunk of wall & starts to break it down
This takes place in the evening. The entire day spent trying to get the other tribe
to start reconstruction
1 No, you go.
2 No, you go!
3 I have to go to the restroom real quick. You go ahead get started.
4 Oh! Its lunchtime, subhanAllah. We gotta have lunch now.
Theyve been making excuses all day long, & Walid was finally frustrated enough
to get a hammer & start
1 When tearing down the first part of the Kabah, Walid talks to
Allah: We dont mean any offense by what we are doing. We only
want to better this Kabah.
It doesnt take long to get dark, so Walid didnt go far with the first step of
renovation
Now everyone decides, Lets see what happens tonight, because if something bad
happens well forgo this construction business.
Morning comes. The very first person who shows up for construction is Walid bin
Mughira. Hes fine, hes healthy, & excited to resume
Everyone sees that nothing bad happened to Walid, so they now feel comfortable
enough to start construction
After they tear down the wall & get to the base of the wall, they reach the
foundation where Ibrahim (as) laid the very first base (the asaas of Ibrahim)
The asaas contained green-colored rocks, with jagged & rough edges (like jagged
teeth). The rocks werent laid down straight; they were all pushed up against each
other
Ibrahim didnt have access to neat straight bricks, so he took whatever rocks he
could find & started to piece them together
This foundation was really solid, settled into the earth. They couldnt budge the
rocks. People decide to build on top of it
A man came, bringing an iron rod tool, Im gonna fix this.

He jams it in the foundation, trying to crack it out of place

As soon as he does that, the entire earth in Makkah shook, like a warning
earthquake
As soon as Makkah shook, people say, Listen, take it easy, guy. JazakAllah, but
no JazakAllah.
This is the Bayt of the Raab, we should not disturb the foundation.
Renovation project of the Kabah took place when Muhammad (saw) was 35
years old
The people wanted to move the door of the Kabah higher from the ground, so
youd need a ladder to get there

3.
4.

If someone were to sneak inside the Kabah, then youd be able to see them
To do that, Kabah walls had to be at least 16 meters tall
They need a lot of resources, which they didnt have because they had the
restriction of using the purest of the pure materials & funds to reconstruct the
Kabah
The original shape of the Kabah was that it was straight on 3 sides, & on 1 side
it was oval (more rectangular than square). The extra area of the Kabah that was
extended (like a bit of a half wall) is called the Hateem/Hijaar

Because there wasnt enough funds, they didnt fix the hateem they took a few
stones & put it around the boundary to mark the original shape of the Kabah
The original Kabah also had two doors

Today, there is only one door, which is on the eastern wall of the Kabah
There used to be a door on the western wall too
Pilgrims would enter though one side & exit out the other this kept a steady
flow of traffic
Due to lack or resources, they couldnt include the door on the western side
1 They also wanted to limit the access to the Kabah due to the
break-in
2 One door to get in, same door to get out. One door to guard.
One door to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
There was another fight between the tribes regarding the placing al-Hajar alAswad (the Black Stone) in the proper place

The understanding was that the leader of the tribe would be the one to place the
Hajar al-Aswad inside the Kabah, but which tribes leader would have this
honor?
Things deteriorated very quickly & people started fighting amongst each other
No, our leader will do it.
No, your leaders not fit for the honor, our leader will do it.
Abu Umaiyya was one of the respected elders of the Quraysh. He was one of

the oldest members of the Quraysh

When Muhammad walked in through the door, there was an audible sigh of relief
from everyone because he was someone who everyone respected. Muhammad is a
man of great intelligence & a man of great honor & integrity
1 Someone said, How great is it that the person who walked through
the door was Al-Ameen?
1 By that time, more people knew Muhammad as Al-Ameen
than by his own name
Everyone is smiling, very relieved. They fill in Muhammad on their dispute &
their solution method

Muhammad removed his own shawl & placed it on the ground. He placed the
Black Stone in the middle of the shawl.
Then he called for all of the tribal leaders to grab an edge of the shawl & walk it
over into the Kabah
When they were right next to the place of the stone, Muhammad took the stone
with his own hands & placed it in the proper place himself
The very first house that was established for the people on the face of the earth
was the House of Allah in Makkah

Abu Umaiyya said, Alright, STOP. Everyone be quiet!

Out of some semblance of respect for the older gentleman, everyone got quiet
Abu Umaiyya continued, Look, were rebuilding the house of God. So why dont
we leave this matter to God? Well pray now to the Raab of the Bayt that He make
the next man who enters through that door, be a special person who will put the
al-Hajar al-Aswad in the Kabah (another narration says hell be the mediator as
to who will settle this dispute).
Everyone agreed, since there fighting wasnt getting them anywhere
The next man who entered Babu Bani Shayba (door of Family of Shayba) was
none other than Muhammad he was there to pay daily respect to Kabah

Qualities of the Kabah

Mubarraka place full of blessings
Place of guidance for all of humanity
Very clear evident signs there , such as Maqem al Ibrahim
Rights of the Kabah
For the sake of Allah, its obligated for people to visit the Kabah if they are
financially & physically able to do so
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at
Makkah - blessed and guidance for the worlds. In it are clear signs [such as] the
standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to
Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find
thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of
the worlds. (Surat ali Imran, 3:96-97)
Abu Dhar (ra) asked the Prophet, Ya Rasullulah, which masjid was
established first?

The Prophet replied, Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah)

Abu Dhar asked, Which was the next one?
The Prophet replied, Al Masjid al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem)
Abu Dhar asked, How much time elapsed between these two masjids
establishments?
The Prophet replied, 40 years
The land where the Kabah is located is a land that Allah sanctified (made holy)
on the day He created the heavens and the earth. It will remain sacred by the
sanction of Allah til the Day of Resurrection
There are several narrations as to exactly when the Kabah was first established

When Ibrahim raised the foundations of the Bayt with his son Ishmael, as
according to the Quran
1 However, due to the language of the Quran, some scholars say that
the foundation was already in place, long before Ibrahims birth
2 The Baytallah was already established before the creation of the
earth by 2000 years
3 The language of the ayah talks about that the Kabah was the
originating point of earth, & the earth was stretched out from that
originating point
Some narrations say that Jibril (as) told Adam & Hawa (as) where the Kabah
should be (Build a house for Me), so thats where Adam started digging
1 Then Allah commanded Adam to do tawaaf
2 Then Allah told Adam, You are the first of humanity & this is the
first of the Houses of Worship.
3 Then centuries passed, until Nuh came to visit the Kabah. Then
centuries passed, until Ibrahim came and raise the foundation of
it.
When Adam completed tawaaf, he met with other angels who congratulated him
& said, We did the tawaaf of the Kabah 2000 years before you. Bit of trash talk.
Urwaat al Zubaid, a student of Aisha, said theres not a single Prophet who did
not do hajj of the Bayt
Ali bin Abi Talib (Muhammads cousin) was asked, Was the Kabah the first
house (generally speaking) ever built?

Ali replied, No, but this is the first house where baraqah & signs of God were put
into. This is the first place of worship on earth.
Other narrations say that Ali replied, No, there were other houses of worship
established long before the Kabah, but the Kabah holds a special distinction
because of its status in baraqah & sanctuary
Ibrahim was building the Kabah with Ishmael until they reached the place
where the Hajar al-Aswad (Black Stone) goes
They were told by Allah, Create a place where a stone can fit.

So they create a place, & when the reach that place, Ibrahim tells Ishmael, Go &
find me a stone that can fit here.
When Ishmael comes back with a stone, he finds that al Hajar al-Aswad is already
in place of where his stone was supposed to go
He asked Ibrahim, Where did you find this, father?
Ibrahim replied, Jibril brought this from the sky & placed it here in its proper
spot.
A long time passed after Ibrahim built the Kabah, & the Kabah started to fall
apart from age
Another people who inhabited the area at the time, the Amalika, restored the
Kabah
Then after many centuries, the Kabah started to deteriorate again, & the current
people of the area, the people of Jurhum, restored the Baytullah
More centuries pass. This time the people of Quraysh inhabit the area, & they
renovate the deteriorating Kabah
Aisha (ra) narrates that during Fathul Makkah (Conquest of Makkah), the
Muslims cleaned out the Kabah of idols, & established proper form of worship. It
was during that conquest that the Prophet told Aisha of the original construction
of the Kabah

He shared with her the original shape & features of the Kabah
The Prophet said, Realize that your people, the Quraysh, didnt have enough
funds to properly restore the Kabah as it originally was. Thats why its in a
slightly different form today. If your people werent so new in Islam (they hadnt
had a lot of time to change their ideas & perceptions), then I would have actually
done a complete reconstruction of the Kabah. I would create an eastern door &
western door of the Kabah, & I would once again include the hateem in the
construction of the Kabah.
Abdullah bin Zubair was in charge of Makkah (the masul mayor of Makkah).
One of his main teachers was his aunt Aisha (ra)

Knowing about the original Kabah from his aunt, he decided to fulfill what the
Prophet had expressed. He made 2 doors (one in the eastern wall & one in the
western wall) for the Kabah & included the hateem into the construction of the
Kabah
After this khalifa was killed, the new khalifa orders the Kabah to be restored to
the way the Quraysh restored it, not knowing that the Kabah they were about to
renovate was already in its original design as the Prophet had desired
1 One of the doors of the Kabah was boarded up & the hateem was
removed from the original construction. They completely redo it the
Baytullah
Years later, the khalifa at the time was al-Mansur, who consults with Imam
Malik, the Alim of Medina

Mansur said, We have come to realize that theres this hadith in place, and
Abdullah bin Zubair (ra) had done exactly to the Kabah what the Prophet had

expressed. But then Abdullah bin Marwan came along & re-did everything. Now
that we know that the hadith is in place, youre the big imam, the grand mufti. If
you tell me that we should reconstruct the Kabah in the way the Prophet had
expressed, I can have it done. We got the funds, we got the people I can have it
done. I just need the word from you.
Imam Malik said, Dont. Leave it be, because the Prophet left it the same as the
Qurayshs renovation, so that means its okay. I dont want kings to come along &
turn the Kabah into a toy. I dont another king to come along & think, O, I didnt
like the king before me, so Im going to change the Kabah in my way. Then
another king will come along & go, Ill show you whats up & redo the Kabah.
Next thing you know, this reconstruction is going on nonstop. Just leave it. The
Messenger left it be, so leave it be.
1 Until today, the Baytullah has one door & the hateem is not part of
the actual Kabah
One tradition of the Kabah is placing the Kiswaah on the Kabah
The first one to put Kiswaah on Kabah was Hajjaj bin Yusuf, a terrible guy.
Hajjaj bin Yusuf was the one who killed Abdullah bin Zubair. He was a mass
murderer & ordered hundreds of executions
He killed a couple of Sahaba, including Abdullah bin Zubair
Hajjaj bin Yusuf was the one who formed the tradition of placing the Kiswaah to
show respect to the Kabah
The first one to expand Masjid al-Haram to accommodate the growing ummah
was Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second khalifah
He bought all the houses that were immediately around the Kabah so he can
expand the area around the masjid
Later on, Uthman, the third khalifah, purchased more homes & expanded the
masjid even more
Ibn Zubair had a lot of orate decorations done around the Kabah
