Introduction
This book is designed to provide an early introduction ,to thumb
position.
It uses familiar tunes to provide.an auraL goal for
physical execution.
It explores different finger patterns within
one position, with the thumb held on the octave harmonics on the A
and D strings.
The finger patterns include:

Major (half step between the second and third fingers)

Dorian (half step between the first and second fingers)
Phrygian (half step between the thumb and first finger)
Lydian ( whole steps between all fingers)

The material is presented in treble and tenor clef on facing pages

to facilitate the learning of the clefs.
As in the First position
book the material gradually increases in range and difficulty.
The last section of the book introduces stepwise shifting within
one key using the different finger patterns, first in D Major.
The following A Major scale exercises involve shifting the thumb
allover
the fingerboard.
It is not necessary to play these thumb position exercises in
their entirety in the beginning stages.
The gradual introduction
of more shifts in thumb position is meant to <strengthen the thumb,
to familiarize the student with the geography of the fingerboard
in the higher positions, and to prepare the student for the
playing of double stops.
