TIMBER

Timber: Timber may be defined as any wood which is used in engineering

construction.

Advantages of timber over other materials:

1. Timber can be easily worked with tools of any size and can take good polish.
2. It is comparatively stronger than other materials commonly used when
considered in proportion to weight.
3. Timber gives shining appearance.
4. It is economical.
5. It can be used both as load bearing and non-load bearing members in
structures.
6. It has low thermal conductivity.
7. It is durable.
8. It is less affected by weathering effect.
9. Timber can be modified to make desired furniture or other thing.
10. It has good resale value.
Properties of good timber:
1. A freshly cut surface of timber should exhibit hard and shining appearance.
2. The colour of timber should preferably be dark.
3. A good timber should offer resistance when it is being penetrated by another
body.
4. It should be fire resistive.
5. It should be easily workable.
6. It should be free from natural and artificial defects.
7. A good timber should be capable of retaining its shape during conversion or
seasoning.
8. A good timber should give out a clear ringing sound when struck.
9. A good timber should have low water permeability.
10.It should be durable.
11.It should have sufficient strength.

12.The timber with heavy weight is considered to be sound and strong.

Uses of timber:
1. It is used for door and window frames, shutters of doors and windows,
roofing materials etc.
2. It is used to make shuttering.
3. It is used for making furniture and musical instrument.
4. It is used for making agricultural instruments and sport goods.
5. It is used for making toys, matches.
6. It is used for railway sleepers, packing cases etc.
7. It is used for temporary bridge and boat construction.
8. It is used to make partition wall.
9. It is used in ceiling for decorative purpose.

Veeners: Veener is a thin sheet ranging from 1/16 to inch. These are used in
construction where lightness, durability, stiffness, non-shrinking, non-splitting and
decorative properties are desired. Veeners are obtained only from those woods
which have well shaped grains and which are pleasing in appearance. Veeners are
principally used in manufacture of plywood, batten boards, laminated boards and
decorative facings.
Plywood: Plywood consists of number of thin sheets of veeners which are pressed
and bonded together with some binding material or cementing material like glue or
synthetic adhesive. The plywoods are used for various purposes such as ceilings,
doors, furniture, partitions, paneling walls, packing cases etc.
Laminated boards: These are called laming boards. These are also manufactured
similarly as ply woods. They are of either three or multiples. The total thickness of
laminated boards usually varies from to 2 inch, but sometimes thicker varieties
are also made. Laminated boards are used as partitions, decorative works, furniture
etc.
Partex: Partex is the trade name of the versatile chip boards manufactured from
wood veeners, wood chips or jute sticks. Partex is a Bangladeshi product. Partex
plain boards are ideal for surfacing with practically any material such as laminated

sheets, plywoods, wood veeners etc. Partex boards are available in wide range of
densities and thickness.
