HIGHER DEGREE BY RESEARCH: SAFETY MANAGEMENT PLAN

Guidelines for the Safety Management Plan
1.

The aim of this process is to ensure that during the planning phase of the research project, consideration is given to safety issues
that may arise and that consultation has taken place between the supervisor and the student on assessment of the risk associated
with specific safety issues.

2.

To complete the requirements of the structured programme only the signed Hazard Identification Form (page 1.) needs to be
completed and returned with the Core Component of the Structured Program.

3.

A copy of the Hazard Identification form should be retained with the Hazard Management Log.

4.

The Hazard Management Log is a tool to record the safety issues associated with the project and to enable the student and
supervisor to be clear about the safety planning that has been undertaken. i.e. hazard identification, risk assessment and risk
control.

5.

It is not a specific requirement that the student undertake the risk assessments (although the plan provides a good training
opportunity). Risk assessments may be pre-existing and hence a reference is recorded on the Hazard Management Log or the risk
assessment may be carried out by others within the workplace.
HOWEVER it is a legislative and policy requirement that activities that pose a risk to staff or higher degree students are assessed
prior to the activity being undertaken, and that students or staff undertaking the activity have seen the risk assessment.

6.

Should new hazards be indentified these can simply be added to the Hazard Management Log and updated on the local copy of the
Hazard Identification Form.
(You do NOT need to send a revised form to the Adelaide Graduate Centre).

7.

As part of auditing requirements the HSW Team or WorkCover may require access to the Hazard Management Logs to ensure that
the process is being correctly undertaken.

To assist in the risk assessment process the HSW team have developed a simplified way to gain access to the online Risk
Management Safety System (RMSS) for all staff and higher degree students.
Staff and higher degree students can obtain a user name and password by sending a request to RMSS Support
[rmss.support@adelaide.edu.au] with the following information:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Staff or student number

Name (first and last)
Email address
School and discipline

A user name and password will be forwarded the following working day along with a set of notes on completing a risk assessment in
RMSS. A training session is not required.
