Chapter 4
1. Describe the main forces in the global task environment that are affecting the
organization.
The main forces in the global task environment that are affecting
Wilmington University are its suppliers, customers and competitors.
The suppliers, consisting of the faculty and staff, supply Wilmington
University with its resources (teaching classes and running the school).
Without faculty, the school would not be able to exist.
The customers are the Universitys students, who pay the school for
their education. If there were not enough students, then there
wouldnt be a demand for classes, causing the University to shut down.

The competition to Wilmington University is all of the other colleges

competing for students. If they do not have the resources available to
compete with other schools, then they would lose their customers, the
students, which in turn would shut down the school.
2. Describe the main forces in the global general environment that are affecting
the organization.

The main forces that are affecting Wilmington University are economic,
technological and demographic. Economic forces, such as inflation,
unemployment, and economic growth can have an impact on the
University. When the economy is down, the University could see a
decrease in enrollment which could lead to financial difficulty.
The technological forces are the changing technologies that the
University needs to keep updated in order to stay relevant.
The demographic environment is the changing attitudes towards
characteristics of the population, such as age, gender, ethnic origin,
race, sexual orientation, and social class.

The University needs to be aware of the changing demographics and

make sure to make accommodations for those who need it.
3. Explain how environmental forces affect the job of an individual manager
within this organization. How do they determine the opportunities and
threats that its managers must control?
The environmental forces that affect the Dean of Students is the
students, or customers. If the number of students change, then the
Dean of Students must examine if more or less courses are needed
based on the number of students and adjust the number of Professors.
