1.1 Backgound of The Research

Nature has become part of all forms of life living things on earth. Indirectly,
the nature of living beings have interacted with each other. The interaction that
occurs raises the close relationship between nature as an inseparable part of living
beings. In the use of nature's own words, often refers to geology and wildlife.
However, nature can also refer to a common thing as species of plants and
animals, and even in some cases lead to an inanimate object that has the ability to
change their own accord as well as living beings. Nature has provided many
benefits to the survival of creatures on earth. Nature also has provided a lot of
resources to be used by living things. Thus, at the time living things interact with
nature in a way that is true then the universe will respond well. However, at the
time living things interact in the wrong way then responded by nature is not good.
One is global warming.
The phenomenon can be seen very clearly in the film that has the writer
watched titled Wall E. In the film is shown as a result of any interaction between
living beings and nature that people forget the real identity of the natural life and

they become more dependent on technology for comfort living. Humans no longer
care for the earth and the robot takes on the role of man as stewards of nature.
The characters of robot and human, the writer wants to more closely examine
the views of nature based on the characters in the film. In human character, human
beings do not play an active role in preserving nature as it should be. This is seen
in the human characters who tend not to care about the preservation of nature.
They use technology to replace the role to keep the earth. Robot character in the
movie Wall E itself has an important role in maintaining nature so that the robot
becomes the main character in the film. The role in question is the role which the
human task that should preserve nature became involved in technological
sophistication so constructed as to respond to commands from the creator.
Preservation of nature is the duty of man as the inheritors of the earth. In the
ecocritisism theory that will be used to analyze the data, shows that nature has an
important role in human life and nature requires to be preserved as well. Thus,
nature gives huge influence for humans and all its activities. In this regard, Peter
Barry (2002) in Beginning of Theory an Introduction to Literary and Cultural
asserted that for the ecocritic, nature really exists, out there beyond ourselves, not
needing to be ironised as a concept by enclosure within knowing inverted
commas, but actually present as an entity which affects us, and which we can
affect, perhaps fatally, if we mistreat it. Nature, then, isnt reducible to a concept
which we conceive as part of our cultural practice.
In ecocriticism theory, relationship between human and non-human shows that
a close relationship each other. In thesis An Analysis of Environmental Issues

Using Ecocriticism in James Camerons Film Avatar by Rohmah Romadhon

(2011) stated that the various relationship of nature with its varied character;
human and non-human alien. The arrogances of human being that consider nature
as an object to explore, bring them to be apart from the rest of nature.
Ecocriticism also appear in an essay entitled Ecocriticism in Indian Fiction by
Kumari Shikha (2011) stated that ecocriticism gives increased attention to literary
representatives of nature and is sensitive to interdependencies that ground the
author, character or work in the natural system. From the beginning the writers
have shown interest towards nature, culture and landscape. For writers like
Narayan landscape was the part of the theme or the characters which showed
growth with time. Apart from this, the natural calamities that the country faced
from time to time also served as themes for novels of writers like Bhabani
Bhattacharya and Kamla Markandya.
An essay Ecology in Relation to Ecocriticism

to Ecocriticism by Dr. P.

Nagaraj and V. Shoba (2013) also stated that whatever human beings do to the
ecosystem have the reflections back. If man does not harm nature, the nature
keeps him safe.
From the above background, the authors wanted to show that human life
comes from nature and also demanded the right to be preserved. Thus, nature can
be served as well as it should.

1.2 Statement of The Problem

The researcher found the problem about humans and robots vision of nature
in Wall E movie script. Based on the background above, the problem of the study
are formulated as the following:
1. How do humans and robots vision the nature in Wall E movie script?
2. Which characters between human and robot who dominated the vision of
nature in Wall E movie script?
1.3 Research Objective
In line with the problem, the objectives of the study are:
1. To find out humans and robots vision the nature in Wall E movie script
are.
2. To find out the characters between human and robot who dominated the
vision of nature in Wall E movie script are.
1.4 Research Significance
Finding of this study are expected to be relevant and useful to provide some
information about ecocriticism. It is expected that the finding of this study are
useful for the readers who are interested in theoretical usefulness and practical
usefulness.
This study theoretically useful as a contribution to the development of a
qualitative research study of literature, especially for mass media such as film.
And finally of the whole research process is able to expand the study of literature,
especially ecocriticism approach to mass media films, so as to provide a critical
analysis of the way for other similar media.

This study is useful for researchers as a science that examines the application
directly on the analysis of humans and robots vision the nature contained in
movie. This research can increase knowledge and provide a useful picture as a
reference for students of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University, especially
students of English Language and Literature studies in analyzing humans and
robots vision the nature contained in movie. The results of this study can provide
insight ecocritcism in movie.

1.5 Conceptual Framework

Ecocritic term derived from British which is formed from the word ecology
and criticism. Ecology can be defined as the scientific study of the patterns of the
relationships of plants, animals, and humans against each other and the
environment. Criticism can be interpreted as a form of expression and assessment
of the qualities of a good or bad thing. In a journal entitled Ecocritisism
Interdisiplinary Study of Literature and The Environment by Jelica Toi stated
that ecocriticism is concerned with the relationship between literature and
environment or how mans relationship with his physical environment are
reflected in literature.

Ecocriticism a critical theory in literary approach. In the ecocriticism,

literature blend in with environmental issues. Garrard in the essay Model Model
Kajian Ekokritik Sastra by Sony Sukmawan mentions that ecocritic can help
define, explore, and even resolve ecological problems in the broader sense. In its

function as a medium for representation of attitudes, views, and the public

response to the surrounding environment, potentially literature express ideas about
the environment, including the values of environmental wisdom. This is
reasonable considering the literature grows, develops, and sourced from society
and the natural environment (ecological).
Gifford stated in essay Model Model Kajian Ekokritik Sastra mention
ecocritic text has some characteristics which contain characteristic of pastoral and
apocalyptic narrative. Specifically, the pastoral is a literary tradition that contains
an escape from the city to the village that originally contained in Ancient
Alexandria and became a key form of poetics in Europe during the Renaissance
period. In general, the pastoral is any literature describing the village with implicit
and explicit the city. Apocalyptic narrative form of a revelation about the end of
history. The basic theme of apocalyptic usually a struggle between good and bad.
Gifford also stated pastoral is a form of poetry or drama that tells the
shepherds who spoke with other shepherds, both on grazing and on the rural
environment that surrounds them. Therefore, it can easily be said that the
shepherd is an important marker of pastoral (no shepherd, no pastoral). In
addition, pastoral form can also be seen from the point of view of the reader or
listener. From this point of view, the pastoral is a form of escape (retreat) to and
back (return) to the countryside or to the past life. More specifically regarding the
pastoral understanding is that in general usage refers to the content area, ie all
forms of literature which contains an explanation of the rural nature implicitly or
explicitly opposed to the urban nature. Similarly, Wall E which has similarities

with pastoral. This movie has a message back to the nature although the setting is
used not the village to the city, but the earth to space.

1.6 Research Method

1.6.1 Research Design
In analyzing this study, the writer using the theory of ecocriticism related to
the vision of nature. Ecocritic term derived from British which is formed from the
word ecology and criticism. Ecology can be defined as the scientific study of the
patterns of the relationships of plants, animals, and humans against each other and
the environment. Criticism can be interpreted as a form of expression and
assessment of the qualities of a good or bad thing. Simply ecocritic can be
understood as a critique of environmentally sound.
The writer analyzes Wall E movie script by using qualitative method. Moleong
(1995: 5) states that qualitative research is a type of research, which result the
descriptive data in the form of written or oral words from observed object. The
data in this research are qualitative data, in form of words, spoken or written of
people and analyzed attitudes.

1.6.2 Sample of Data

A range of mountains takes form in the
haze. Moving closer. The mountains are
piles of TRASH. The entire surface is
nothing but waste. (Wall E: 1)
A silhouetted city in the distance. What
looks like skyscrapers turns into trash.
Thousands of neatly stacked CUBES OF

TRASH, stories high. Rows and rows of

stacked cubes, like city avenues. They
go on for miles. (Wall E:1)
2.

Robot

Something moving on the ground far

below. A figure at the foot of a trash
heap. A SMALL SERVICE ROBOT
diligently cubing trash. Rusted, ancient.
Cute. Every inch of him engineered for
trash compacting. (Wall E: 2)

Mini-shovel hands collect junk. Scoop it

into his open chassis. His front plate
closes slowly, compressing waste. A
faded label on his corroded chest plate:
Waste Allocation Loader - Earth Class
(WALLY) Wally spits out a cube of trash.
Stacks it with the others. (Wall E: 3)

3.

Human

A HUMAN PASSENGER sitting, reclined,

in the chair. He is large, round and soft
- like a big baby.Wears a red, BNL
jumpsuit. The chair seems to be
steering itself. Guided by floor lines,
just like the robots. Speaker headrests
block his peripheral vision. A
HOLOGRAPHIC SCREEN floats inches in
front of his face. (Wall E: 27)

Over-developed fingers tap ARMREST

KEYPADS. The controls allow them to
steer...order food...play games...and
most of all...(Wall E: 28)

1.6.3 Source of Data

The main theory is taken from ecocriticism teory. The writer divides the data
source: data source of the study is Wall E movie produced in 2008 by Andrew
Stanton and Jim Reardon (making movie) and original story is written by Andrew
Stanton and Pete Docter., reference and materials related tothe study whether
picking up from books or internet.

1.6.4 Technique of Collecting Data

1. Study literature. Read, record, and give an indication about the incident or
behavior that is in accordance with the method contained in ecocriticism in Wall E
movie script by Andrew Stanton.
2. Choose the data associated with ecocriticism, relation of nature between human
and robot in the movie are realized in the form of data in the form of citations.
3. Watching the movie and reading the script determining the data of Wall E.
4. Gather some information from the internet of literature that support the research
variables.

1.6.5 Technique of Analyzing Data

1. Identifying the data. Finding out all of aspects the data in research problem are
related to humans and robots vision the nature.
2. Categorizing the data. Some of data which related the topic sorts into some
categorizing for facilitate the writer for analysis the data.
3. Describing or interpreting the data. Data has been classify and interpreted from
the mean quotations taken then creating logical analysis.
4. Drawing the conclusion of the data. After all aspects examined, the writer
makes the overall conclusion from the data that has been analyzed.
