FOREWORD
National Water Services Commission (SPAN) was established in 2007 to regulate
the water services industry in Malaysia. SPAN envisions a sustainable, reliable and
affordable water services for all by regulating the water services industry through fair,
effective and transparent implementation of the Water Services Industry Act (Act
655). Since its inception, SPAN has been fully committed in instituting improvements
including the emphasis on raising standards and performance in the countrys water
and sewerage services sector.
Besides this, SPAN aims to increase its efforts towards improving the quality and
operational efficiency of water and sewerage services industry to ensure
sustainability. One of the approaches in line with this goal is by developing technical
drawings for sewerage systems used in the industry. Hence, the identification and
evaluation of national, regional and international standards have been made by
SPANs Sewerage Regulatory Department to formulate technical and performance
specifications for adaptation in sewerage industry.
This publication of Technical Drawing on Standard and Typical Drawing for
Sewerage System Part 1: Sewer and Appurtenances Gravity Sewer is a result of a
joint effort of the various relevant stakeholders of the industry. The drawing contains
standardisation criteria for gravity sewers utilising both rigid and flexible pipes as a
guiding principle for their design and construction requirements.
The development of technical and performance specifications in the form of a
technical drawing is crucial for a higher and uniformed standard which will surely
benefit the local sewerage industry. With its publication, it is hoped that it will
contribute towards better planned and well-organised development of new sewerage
systems to fulfil long-term infrastructure requirements and obligations.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
To date, SPAN had published three (3) volumes of Malaysian Sewerage Industry
Guidelines and one (1) Technical Specification which are used nationwide. This
publication is another collaborative effort by SPAN to produce a document on
technical drawing for sewerage system. It would not had been possible without the
joint effort of industry stakeholders namely representatives from Association of
Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM), Association of Environmental Consultants
and Contractors of Malaysia (AECCOM), Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), Public
Works Department Malaysia (JKR) and Sewerage Services Department (JPP). The
commitment and cooperation shown by the members of TWG has been exemplary.
We also would like to record our utmost appreciation to all who had been involved in
the preparation and publication of this document. We envisaged that many more
technical drawings publication be produced and hope for continuous support from
the industry players.
