INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

WE LOVE TO CREATE THE

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY
YOU LOVE TO USE
Wales has a long and
proud history of industrial
innovation. At CEMAS we
are leading a new revolution
in mobile applications
technology; researched,
designed and developed
here in Wales. Weve come
a long way since our
inception in September
2010. The future promises
to be even brighter.
We like to think were unique.
CEMAS is an ERDF funded project
based on an innovative business
support concept. In essence we aim
to replace the traditional cash support
to businesses model, which has a very
high risk of failure, with a new support
programme a model designed to
provide a finished product backed
by extensive research and project
management expertise.
The scheme is open to eligible
beneficiaries from small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
in the Convergence area of Wales.

ABOUT CEMAS

ABOUT CEMAS
TO ASPIRE IS TO ACHIEVE
Firstly, this is not an annual review
or report but a statement of our past,
present and future aspirations
what weve already achieved,
our current work and where we
hope to see ourselves in the future.
Im fortunate to have been here
from day one and I take great pride
in the achievements made by
CEMAS to date. Having lived through
every fantastic event and project,
the content within this document
brings that excitement together
all in one place.

PG
02

Our projects would be nothing

without the creation and training
of an exceptional team. Each member
is an incredible asset for CEMAS and
Wales. Their talents are a force to be
reckoned with. You only need look at
the vast array of mobile applications
(apps) profiled in this document to
appreciate the wealth and breadth
of knowledge based here at CEMAS.
Together were an efficient and
solid project governance model.
As such, we believe we are a beacon
for delivering high quality successful
projects in Wales.

Our goal is to help SMEs in the

Convergence area of Wales to
take advantage of emerging mobile
technologies by helping to de-risk
the adoption of mobile applications
and technologies for such businesses
in Wales. It also stimulates an
increased awareness and demand
for mobile apps that benefits the
apps development industry
in Wales as a whole.
However, for our business support
to provide true competitive advantage
for businesses in Wales, we need to
createa focus point in research and
development expertise. We cannot do
this alone and this document sheds
light on some of the flagship research
projects currently running in the
Integrated Communications Research
Centre (ICRC) at the University of
South Wales, the home and umbrella
organisation for CEMAS.
ICRC hasan exceptional track record
in collaborative research with
major industries such as Orange,
Panasonic, and most recently
General Dynamics UK.

CEMAS is an exemplar project that has

demonstrated excellence and best practice
both in its product/service offering and its
ability to take companies on a journey that
not only delivers, but also adds significant
value on both a tactical and strategic level.
The Innovation Partnership
Mid-Term Evaluation Report, May 2014

This document is only a snapshot of

the work undertaken at CEMAS and
we look forward to continuing to be
a key player in Wales technological
revolution in the future.

I take great pride

in the achievements
made by CEMAS
to date.

ABOUT CEMAS

PUSHING TECHNOLOGICAL
BOUNDARIES THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Some of the best business
ideas develop as a result
of identifying a potential
gap in the market when
a specific product or
service is hard to find or is
non-existent. Such was the
case with CEMAS Director
Khalid Al-Begain. The story
to date starts here...
PG
04

It was 2007 and Khalid, through his

experience of starting a new business
and interacting with a large number
of SMEs, recognised a need to find
new ways of assisting companies
in Wales to take advantage of this
innovative and fast moving sector.
His vision was one shared by the
Welsh Government through the
Welsh European Funding Office
(WEFO), who became part-funders
of the project. The project was
awarded 2.4 million from the
European Regional Development
Fund (ERDF) to support businesses
in the Convergence area of Wales,
with a further 2.4 millon of match
funding provided by the University.
CEMAS was officially launched on
the 30th March 2011 at the University
of Glamorgan (now University of
South Wales) by the then Deputy First
Minister for Wales, Ieuan Wyn Jones.

The launch demonstrated how CEMAS

aimed to help companies embrace
and promote ICT to all sectors of the
Welsh economy and provide mobile
technology solutions to improve
productivity and efficiency.
Since the projects inception,
CEMAS has assisted 106 companies
and we are on course to achieve our
target of 138 by completion of the
project in 2015. The success of the
innovative programme is rooted in
our ability to enable companies to
take advantage of specialist support
to define the best product
specification for the business.
In so doing, it de-risks the process
of designing, developing and
testing ideas when taking a new
app to market.

CEMAS has assisted

106 companies and
we are on course
to achieve our target
of 139 by the
completion of the
project in 2015.

ABOUT CEMAS

A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
EILIAN RODERICK,
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, CEMAS

PG
08

CEMAS is perfectly
positioned within the
University of South Wales
to promote Welsh talent
to Wales and the rest
of the world. Eilian Roderick
is no exception. With a
background in media design
and TV, Eilian has enjoyed
an ever evolving and
creative role within CEMAS
since joining the team in
2011, but why take our
word for it? Heres Eilians
personal thoughts...
Wales is my home and I feel
a great deal of pride in helping Welsh
companies achieve their goals and
to succeed not only here in Wales,
but also in Europe and the rest of
the World. Creating mobile products
for our clients helps them stay current
whilst also providing a valuable
competitive edge.

Its very satisfying to see our design

and development expertise creating
a product which many companies
normally would not have the
resources to create. Seeing the
final product Ive helped create,
whether from a graphic, UX,
UI or branding standpoint is a very
rewarding outcome. CEMAS has given
me an incredible opportunity to work
with interesting products across
a wide range of industries and sectors
of the Welsh economy. Im also
a strong advocate of the MINe
network as it is a great way for
our clients to connect with industry
experts in all fields and encourages
them to work collaboratively
to advance their enterprises.
CEMASs ability to organise great
product launches within appropriate
venues and with a commitment
to Welsh culture and bilingualism
is unique and I think it gives Welsh
talent a platform they may not
otherwise attain without help
from CEMAS.

Wales is my home and I feel a great deal

of pride in helping Welsh companies achieve
their goals.

ABOUT CEMAS

WHATS NEXT FOR CEMAS

The success of the mobile
app workshop in Llandudno
at the end of 2013 inspired
a decision to host a series
of similar events in other
Convergence unitary
authority areas in 2014.
These are already proving
very popular.
This year will also see the
development of the Welsh App
Showcase. This event is usually
hosted once in September, but due
to unprecedented demand and
interest, will run twice in 2014
one in both South and North Wales.

THE VISION
AND THE FUTURE
CEMAS has always kept its vision
beyond the currently achievable.
This is paramount if we are to stay
ahead in this fastest evolving sector
of technology. Our developed solid
base of knowledge and expertise,
established governance process
and world-class research create the
perfect building pillars for continuous
value added, high quality support to
businesses in Wales.
Our vision is to grow the project
startedas CEMAS into a world class
centrefor research and development
of Fifth Generation mobile
applications and technologies.

3RD ANNUAL
WELSH APP
SHOWCASE

PG
14

CEMAS hosted the

3rd annual Welsh App
Showcase in September
2013 at the Marriott
Hotel in Cardiff with
over 30 companies
exhibiting at the event.
The Welsh App Showcase
is an opportunityfor
Convergence based Welsh
SMEs to promote their
apps and mobile related
products to a wide
audience, with over
150 in attendance.

ARCHWILIO
November 2013 was
abusy month for the
CEMAS team, with the
launch of the Archwilio
mobile app. A world first,
this app enabled Wales to
become the first country to
capture all its archaeological
records on a single app.
Commissioned by the four Welsh
Archaeological Trusts, and designed
and built by CEMAS, the app was
launched by John Griffiths,
Minister for Culture and Sports,
at the National Museum Wales.
John Griffiths, added:

SMEs, freelancers and potential

new start-ups are also able to take
advantage of the wide variety of
support available to them throughout
Wales by attending seminars relating to
the benefits of mobile apps in business
at no cost. The keynote speaker at
the event was Will Jones, President of
Monitise, who spoke on how mobile
banking is transforming consumer
engagement with their bank.

The Archwilio app marks an

important leap forwards in using
technology to discover the heritage
of Wales. As well as allowing users
to check records, the app can be
used to add information, opening up
opportunities for volunteers to get
directly involved in archaeological
recording and investigation.
The Archwilio app truly opens
archaeology to everyone in Wales.

The event was

hugely successful
with over 30
companies exhibiting.

MOBILE APP
WORKSHOP
SERIES 2014

This event held at the Venue

Cymru in November 2013,
saw informative sessions
on a range of topics.
These included providing
advice on designing mobile
apps and preparing for app
development while saving
time and money during the
process. In his presentation,
Golwgs Owain Schiavone
described his experience
collaborating with CEMAS
on Ap Rwdlan and how it
had benefited his business.

Capitalising on the
positive feedback
received at the mobile app
workshop in Llandudno,
three Workshops were
delivered in Bridgend,
Caernarfon and
Pembrokeshire between
March and May 2014.

The afternoon was split into two

workshop sessions, the first focusing
on the process of developing
a mobile game and the second on
general mobile app development.
Positive feedback from this event led
to similar workshops being rolled out
across other areas of Wales in 2014.

In addition, a Games Development

Workshop has been scheduled for
October 2014. The events have drawn
on the expertise of the CEMAS staff
members and include case studies
from small businesses based in Wales.

the IRON app.

PG

Gareth recognised the evolving

nature of education. Given his
background in games development,
he saw an opportunity to develop
a mobile game which could also
be an educational tool. The app,
developed on the iOS platform
incorporates locations, people and
events that will never be seen again,
and a period in history of which
many people globally, nationally and
sadly locally, are blissfully unaware.
By utilising current video-games
technology, it has been possible to
digitally re-create historic locations,
allow users to interact and engage
with them while learning about
Wales historic past.

CAULDRON CATERS
Taste Wales, a Rhondda
Cynon Taff based fruit

collaborated with us
to develop a new app,
Cauldron Caters.
The app aims to educate children
about the importance of healthy
eating.One element includes
a gardening game, teaching children
about the seasons, crops and how
fruit and vegetables grow. Once users
harvest crops, a new quest takes them
into the kitchen where they are given
a meal to prepare.

PG

When healthy meals are prepared

the full recipe is unlocked,
allowing the children to then make
the meals at home with their parents.
There is also an encyclopedia to

long-term aim to get more people
thinking about the importance of
healthy food, eating healthily and in
turn, buying locally from Taste Wales.

HORSE RATION
Ceredigion based Arkuris
and Aberystwyth University
collaborated with CEMAS
to release Horse Ration
winner of the 2013 British
Equine Trade Association
Awardfor Innovation.

PG
24

The app is an equine nutrition

calculator, designed to help owners
accurately measure the correct
amount of feed to give their horses.
The idea came from equine
nutritionist Catherine Hale, who at
the time of the apps development
was a final year PhD student at
Aberystwyth University. She said
at the time, On a daily basis,
I saw horses suffering from various
nutrition-related problems where the
welfare of the horse could easily be
improved by simply changing the diet.
We included tips throughout the
app to help users to answer questions
needed to form the ration. The app

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

As a business support programme, CEMAS enjoys a significant advantage from
being hosted by the University of South Wales Integrated Communications
Research Centre (ICRC).
ICRC conducts world-class research in a variety of different areas including fundamental
as well as industry research. Results from this very high calibre research provide CEMAS
with added innovative development capability to help support the Welsh economy.
The following section highlights a number of flagship research and development projects,
funded for the most part by external sources such as EU FP7 and industry.

ICE-WISH:
REDUCING ENERGY
CONSUMPTION
BY 15% IN SOCIAL
HOUSES ACROSS
EUROPE
PG
28

The EU FP7 funded pilot

project is helping 10 Social
Housing Organisations
across Europe to reduce the
tenant energy consumption
by offering the users
detailed analyses about
their energy consumption.
The pilot is running in 10 European
countries, from UK and Denmark,
in the North, to Greece and Spain
in the South. Each country has 30
social dwellings installed with the
ICE-WISH system.
The system utilises smart meters to
report the energy consumption of
every dwelling to an Android set top
box that displays a detailed analysis
of the energy consumption and the
cost of the energy consumed.

The data is also sent to a Cloud server

that analyses it based on temperature,
CO2, humidity, and creates detailed
and unique advices for each of the
dwellings on how the tenants can
reduce their energy consumption
while not reducing their comfort.
The system is designed to work with
all European Union standards and
energy sources (gas, electricity, water,
heating, hot water, district heat, etc.).
The system is also implemented on
Android tablets and can be installed
on any Android device (phone, tablet,
TV-set, STB, etc.). CEMAS has
developed the set top platform
for the project.

The system is
designed to work
with all European
Union standards
and energy sources.

MISSION CRITICAL
SERVICES OVER 4G
AND 5G NETWORKS
Public Protection and
Disaster Relief (PPDR)
services such as the police,
fire brigade, and emergency
medical services (EMS),
are tasked with the daunting
challenge of providing
the first response in life
critical circumstances.
The ability to communicate reliably
is one of the most powerful tools
at the disposal of the PPDR services.
However, the majority of global
PPDR deployments (TETRA and P25)
are narrowband systems originally
designed to support voice and low
bit rate data services. The narrowband
nature of these technologies
translates into the failure to provide
support for data intensive services
e.g. real time video streaming,
file downloads and web browsing;
all of which supplement the mission
critical voice service, thus providing
improved situation awareness for
both first responders and dispatchers.

A comparison between PPDR

and cellular networks reveals the
enormous divergence between
the two; with PPDR networks only
able to support data rates analogous
to the 2G cellular world.
Currently LTE (4G) and LTE-advanced
(5G) standards can support peak data
rates of 300Mbit/s and 3Gbit/s.

Our collaborative research with

General Dynamics UK (EDGE Project)
is contributing to the creation of the
worlds first mission critical services
over 4G and 5G broadband wireless
networks. The system is partly based
on components developed by the
team e.g. GenXfone IMS client,
Media Gateway and the SIP-based
Push-to-talk Server.

The ability to
communicate
reliably is one of the
most powerful tools
at the disposal of the
PPDR services.

GREEN
COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
The Information and
Communication Technology
(ICT) sector has experienced
a prodigious growth in
the number of mobile
subscriptions with 5 billion
recorded in 2012.

From an operators perspective,

reducing the energy consumption
is critical to lowering the operating
expenditure (OPEX), and translates
directly to an attractive bottom line.

3 percent of the world-wide energy

is consumed by the ICT infrastructure
accounting for 2 percent of the global
CO2 emissions, which is comparable
to the world-wide CO2 emissions by
aviation or one quarter of the global
CO2 emissions by cars.

Green Communications Technology

research explores the challenges
related to the efficient energy
utilisation by future (4G and 5G)
communication networks.
The main research themes in this
domain include network architectures,
radio resource management,
interference management,
and energy consumption models
and metrics. Figure 4 below
presents the power consumption
of a cellular base station under
various sleep modes and varying
traffic load conditions.

Besides being environmentally benign,

there is a strong economic incentive
to reduce the energy consumption
of mobile communication networks.
The continuously rising energy
consumption together with steadily
increasing energy costs make it
imperative to manage the energy
bill if mobile operators are to
remain competitive.

Fig 4

PG

This exponential growth has resulted

into the volume of transmitted data
increasing by approximately a factor
of 10 every five years. The increased
traffic is sustained at the expense of
a significant carbon footprint by the
mobile communications industry.

It is predicted that the footprint of

mobile communications might triple
by 2020 reaching more than one third
of the present annual emissions of
the entire United Kingdom.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

SECURING
THE CLOUD
Enterprises introduce Cloud
Computing in order to take
advantage of its benefits.
A Pay-Per-Use model is one of the
most desirable and in a time when you
can bring your own device (BYOD) to
the workplace, it is even more crucial
to keep the connection to the Cloud
secured. Otherwise, there is a threat
in the form of Distributed Denial of
Service (DDoS) and the Economical
Denial of Sustainability (EDoS).
In this regard, the attacks can
exploit the IAM (Identity and
Access Management) vulnerabilities
in the BYOD implementation in the
enterprises which are customers
for the Cloud. Attackers can gain
access to the internal network of
an enterprise to generate EDoS
attacks against the Cloud.

Therefore, the main aim of our

solution is to solve this issue by
proposing a framework which can
be used to encounter DDoS and
EDoS attacks against the Cloud
providers and customers and
mitigating their impacts.
It involves verifying the users
legitimacy at the beginning and
then monitoring their behaviour
using enhanced methods in the
Cloud customers networks that
allow the BYOD trend, in order to
provide a secure Cloud environment.

Attackers can gain

access to the internal
network of an
enterprise to generate
EDoS attacks against
the Cloud.

INNOVATIVE
VIDEO
STREAMING AND
COMMUNICATION
Video communications
has revolutionised the
way people communicate.
With the advent of SkypeTM
and other similar systems
people can communicate
and keep in touch visually.

PG
32

These systems require the user to

have the ability to handle computers
and manage a fairly lengthy process
to create a connection. The Research
team at CEMAS has developed video
communication and control system
that utilises sophisticated
technologies hidden away from
the user, allowing one-touch video
calling through the use of a mobile
tablet. The inclusive nature of
this technology promotes
greater accessibility to all users,
including people with disabilities.
The team has also developed
advanced patented video streaming
technology for security and control
systems such as those used by
LiveGuard system, a spin-out
company from the University
of South Wales.

The inclusive nature

of this technology
promotes greater
accessibility to
all users.

DETECTING
THE ONSET
OF DEMENTIA
If 10% of those with
dementia were diagnosed
early and referred to
inhibit or mitigate their
symptoms, it would save
the economy more than
27 million per year.
The huge leaps and advancements
that are happening in the medical
field are prolonging life expectancy.
When coupled with the recent
changes to daily lifestyles, these two
factors are changing the age-based
demographics of the populations,
particularly in developed countries,
by increasing the proportion of elderly
people. This change leads to emerging
challenges and more pressure that are
added to current caring arrangements
for elderly people.

Specifically, proactive care

for Dementia is one of the
most important challenges that
should be researched. As a result,
using Ambient Intelligence (AmI)
solutions to enhance and optimize
the caring arrangements for elderly
people is a vibrant research topic.
Suggested research solutions are
concentrating on providing behaviour
monitoring or telemonitoring
solutions that are apt to support
and help the clinicians and carers
decision making, in addition to helping
family members to receive assurance
about their relatives.
We are implementing a framework
that considers all stakeholders in
the caring system. The framework
is designed carefully to collect and
process simple sensors raw data
in order to produce a behavioural
model for elderly people living in
their homes. Later on, the generated
model is used to detect and report
behavioural, sudden and gradual
abnormalities to the carer who has a
more effective role in our framework.
