1.Ihaveseensomedicussionsregardingkeepingtankshelleccentricwrtcentreofringwallto
mitigatetheeffectofSoilpressure(seeattachement1).andeventheyhaveprovidedfootingbelow
Ringwallforthesame.
Mydoubtisifthetotalsoilandpressurehasbeenconsideredinthehooptensiondowestillneedto
considerthisoverturningmomentandprovidefoundationforthesame(ifrequired).
PIPrecommendationforringwallfoundationsspecifiestodesigntheringwallfortheeccentric
momentcausedbythetankshellonringwallasingeneraltankshellwillnotbeatcentreofthering
wall.

symmetricalbaseslabsimilartoacircularstripfoundation.(ratherthanjustaring..theringsome
timesareaswideas900mmalso..depthasdeepas2000mm)
WithregardtotheecentricityatthetopofthewallitissuggestedinPIPtoconsidertheeccentricity
duetothefluidatthetopofthewallinadditiontotheshell.Thereisalsoanotherquestionarises
whetherthesoilpressurebelowtheringbeamisuniformortrapezeumshaped?moretowardsthe
inneredgethantheouteredgeofthering?oruniformintheentirewodthodthebeam?PIPsuggests

regardingyoursecondquestionfoundationcanbeprovidedbelowtheringwallincaseswhereseismic
momentishigh.Thismaycauseverylowsoilpressurebelowtheringwallundernormaloperating
condition.butitshallbenotedthatthesettlementwilloccuronlyoncebearingcapacityis
exceeded.oncethebearingcapacityiswithinlimitsthesettlementalsowillbewithinlimitsie25mm
whichisconsideredacceptableforfixedrooftank.howeverforfloatingrooftanksthismustbeavoided
asforsuchtanksevenasmallamountofdifferentialsettlementwillaffectthefloatingroof
mechanism,
sinceseismicisararephenomenacomparedtonormalworkingcondition,itisadvisabletodesignthe
foundationfornormalcondition.howeverifthevaluesarefarabovethelimitsthewallthicknesscan
beincreasedandinextremecasessmallfdnshallbeprovidedbelowthewall.
