Objectives,Development&Structure

Background
The GFSIBoardrecognizesthatfor GFSIto implementitsglobal strategyata locallevel, theprogrammeneeds to
expandgeographicallyandgrowaregionalpresence.TosupporttheeffortsledbyGFSIinLatinAmerica,theGFSI
BoarddecidedtosupporttheformalisationofGFSILocalGroupsinMexicoandColombia.
ThedevelopmentoftheGFSILatAmLocalGroupswillbebasedontheexistinggroupsandwillneedtobemadein
cooperation with other existing groups and association where relevant to ensure there is no duplication and to
createeffectivesynergyforthesupportofFoodSafetyinLatinAmerica.

GFSIBoardMandate
TheGFSILatamLocalgroupswillhavethefollowinggenericrolesandmandate:

1. localawarenessbuildingplatformsandengagementmechanisms
TocommunicatetheGFSIvision,objectivesandapproachtofosteragreaterunderstandinganduptakeofGFSI
approachwithrelevantaudiences.
Thelocalgroupwill:
actasambassadorforGFSIvision&approach
ProvideinfoonGFSItoindustryplayersinterestedinGFSI
RepresentGFSIatmeetings,conferencesandseminars
SupporttheidentificationofopportunitiestopromoteGFSIacrosstheregion/country
HelpbuildGFSInetworkinthatregion/country:engageothercompanies,suppliersandlocalStakeholders
Feedbackregularlyonwhotheyvebeentalkingto,sharefeedback,uptakeandimpact
PrepareaproposalfortheGFSIFocusDay2014

2. localintelligenceplatform
Togather&sharebackinformationonwhatsgoingoninFoodSafetyinthecountry/region
Thelocalgroupwill:
Shareinformationregularlyonwhatsgoingontopicsbeingdiscussedinthecountry/region;onwhosis
workingonwhat;onthelevelofadvancementandimpact.Thisinformationwillthen:
BesharedregularlywiththewholeGFSIcommunityandacrossregionalnetworksthroughLinkedin,
Newsletter,etc
HelpsupporttheidentificationofopportunitiesandchallengesforGFSIwhetherfromchangesin
technology,legislationetc.
WorkcollaborativelyonMexicoandColombiaspecificFoodSafetyissuesbutalsolookatbroaderissuesthat
applytoothercountriesinLatinAmerica.

3. localimplementationplatforms
TosupporttheworkofGFSIonkeystrategicissuesandtechnicalprojectswithinGFSI
Thelocalgroupwill:
helplocalisetheworkledbyGFSIatgloballevelnotablyonauditorcompetence

supporttheworkoncapacitybuilding:
SupportrolloutofGlobalMarketsProgrammepilotsinthecountry/region
SupportdisseminationofinformationontheGlobalMarketProgramme(regional/localrelayofthe
GMPCommunicationworkinggroup)
supporttheworkoftheTechnicalWorkingGrouponRegulatoryAffairs
Collectanddisseminateinformation
Buildanetworkwithgovernments,academiaandothertradeassociationstoensureengagement,
involvementandabetterunderstandingofGFSI.

Structure&Communication
ThedevelopmentoftheGFSILatAmLocalGroupswillbebasedontheexistinglocalgroupsinMexicoandColombia.
Structure
The groups first role will be to define the key steps to the formalisation of the GFSI Local Groups and the
developmentofthefullLocalGroupsstructure(includingtermsofreferenceandexpectedcommitmentfromgroup
members).
Thiswillincludeforthegroupsto:
AssessandrecommendtotheGFSIBoardwhoshouldberepresentedontheLocalWorkingGroup(e.g.
Companies,associations,governmentrepresentatives)toensurethesuccessofthegroup,includingthetype
ofstructurethegroupshouldadopt(e.g.shoulditincludesubgroupstoworkonspecifictopics?Whowould
beinvolved?).
DeveloptermsofReferenceincludingtheexpectedcommitmentsfromgroupsmembers
AgreeonaChairandaViceChairforeachgroup
Setupthedetailedactivityplanbasedongeneralmandate&strategyoutlinedbytheGFSIBoard.
PrepareaproposalfortheGFSIFocusDayin2014inclosecollaborationoftheGFSITeam

Oncethoseelementsaredrafted,thegroupswillshareitwiththeGFSIBoardfortheirreviewandapproval.

Compositionoftheworkinggroups
The groups will have to be representative of the Food Safety experts and balanced, including in priority
representativesfromretail,brandsandfoodservice.

CommunicationbetweenthegroupsandwiththeGFSIBoard
TheLocalgroupwillreporttotheGFSIBoardandwillbesupportedbyaGFSIBoardliaisons:FrankYiannas,Walmart
andCindyJiang,McDonalds.
EachgroupwillagreeonaChairandaViceChair.
EachChairwill:
bethemainliaisonwiththeGFSITeamandtheGFSIBoardandreportregularlytotheBoardonthegroups
progress.
CommunicatewiththeothergroupsChaironaregularbasistoensurecoordination,consistencyandcross
learnings.
EachgroupwillsharetheminutesoftheirmeetingswiththeGFSIBoardviatheGFSITeamaftereachmeeting.
TheBoardwillcommunicatewiththegroupviatheBoardliaison(s)andtheGFSITeam.

SteeringCommitteeMemberCommitment
GroupMembersareexpectedtoattendmostofthemeetingsduringthatyear(meetingfrequencytobedetermined
bythegroup)andtoparticipateactivelyinthedevelopmentoftheGFSIlocalgroup.
