1
RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

This project is for the extent of our knowledge involving the history of the
municipalities and barangays which we reside and for us to learn about the
government officials that are leading our community and the projects they have
implemented to help the citizens. It increases our awareness as residents and
helps us open our minds to issues or problems that need to be solved. There is
also learnings about the different social and political activities present in the
barangay, as well as its economic status.

OBJECTIVES
1) to enhance our knowledge on our society
2) to improve our social interaction skills with others
3) to develop our sense of teamwork
4) to know our barangay officials and if they are doing their jobs well
5) to be aware of problems that are needed to be taken care of in the barangay
6) to learn about the action plans or programs of the officials

2
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Enhance- Enhance means to improve our knowledge.
Extent- Extent means the maximum capacity of our knowledge about this
project.
Guided- Guided means doing our project with the help and support of God.
Interaction- Interaction means a reciprocal action between two objects.
Reside- Reside means to live in a specific place.
Separate- Separate means to divide things accordingly.
Society- Society is a community, nation, or broad grouping of people having
common traditions, institutions and collective activities and interests.

3
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this research project is to learn the significant things

related to the place of our residence. Some of these include: why our barangay
was named Talamban, who are the barangay officials and their purpose as leaders,
the social and political backgrounds and even the economic activities. This study
gives us ideas or bits of information on how to help even in simple ways like
proper disposal of garbage, or separation of biodegradable and nonbiodegradable
waste for a fresh and nice barangay. Learning more about the needs of our
barangay increases our responsibility as residents. In becoming more responsible,
preventing certain sicknesses or diseases like dengue will be easier. With this tiny
help, we are already contributing in lessening the problems of our barangay.

RESEARCH PROCEDURE
First, we went to Barangay Talamban's barangay hall and met with the
barangay chairman, asked questions related to the history of the barangay, its
economic activity and social and political backgrounds. Our interview with our
respondent, Hon. Jesus O. Remedio, consisted of questions about his personal
information. It was concluded with a group picture. Each of us also interrogated
our parents about their knowledge on the barangay to further increase our research
results.

HISTORY OF BARANGAY TALAMBAN

In the past, the popular name was TANGBAN. It was derived from the
word "TANGUB" and "TANGUBAN".
According to folklore, Barangay Talamban was surrounded by giant clams
known as "tangub". The story goes that one of the clams' mouth was usually open.
But when it closed, it produced a sound like thunder which can be heard all
around the barangay. The people during that time took it as a bad omen for the
coming of a pestilence, drought or typhoon.
From the name of the clams, the place came to be known as Tanguban,
which was later changed to Tangban and still being used among the old folks. The
name was again transformed to Talamban, which could not be traced or explained
how it came to be.
Talamban is one of Cebu City's biggest and oldest barangays.

7
ECONOMIC ACTIVITY

Barangay Talamban has fine economic activities that help boost our
barangay's financial funds. Barangay Talamban earns 10% from the Real Estate.
The barangay also earns from the BIR. It earns Php 500 000 for the payment of
clearances. The barangay uses the funds for building infrastructures, distributing
of medicines, and the buying of dump trucks. Barangay Talamban has many
businesses and establishments. Some of these include Gaisano-Talamban, Petron,
Mercury Drugstore, RD Pawnshop, Metrobank, Shell, Rose Pharmacy, and M
Lhuillier. There are also carenderias, dormitories, beauty parlors and many more.

Because poverty is abundant in Talamban, there are only a few High Class
people and more Middle and Low Classes. Most of the High Class consist of
businesses.

8
SOCIAL BACKGROUND

In Barangay Talamban, there are a lot of activities that help in developing the
social status of each resident. One of the most common is the CCTV cameras
around the barangay to help ensure the safety of each resident. Another is the
prohibiting of videokes. This is to ensure that no person will stay and wake up late
to miss any of their important tasks. This is also to prevent anyone from getting
drunk. The barangay has recently acquired two new garbage trucks to promote the
cleanliness of the barangay to prevent pollution and diseases. The barangay also
offers free medicines for the poor. They also construct drainage systems and
school buildings to develop the health and education of the residents. All of those
are successful because of the finance of the barangay officials.

9
POLITICAL BACKGROUND

During our interview. Hon. Jesus O. Remedio, Jr. Was still the current
barangay captain with his 6 barangay councilors. There are also the barangay
secretary and treasurer. For the SK Council, we have Hon. Mark Glen T. Borbajo
in the position of SK Chairman and there are 7 SK Council members. After the
barangay elections, the new barangay captain is Dario Arcilla with his barangay
councilors, Nelson Archival, Dexter Tudtud, Marquez Entece, Cecilio Cadampog,
Pepito Aguar, Santos Inocando Jr. and Alex Leyson.

10
CONCLUSION

Therefore, it is important that the resident should have great knowledge

about their barangay. Learning about its social and political backgrounds as well
as its economic activity is a must. As residents, it's our job to be aware to the
needs of our barangay. One of these needs is keeping the barangay's cleanliness. It
is also important to know our barangay officials to make sure they're functioning
well for the good of the community and so we can recommend them suggestions
that will make our barangay become a better place. In this project, there must also
be cooperation and teamwork between the members because it would have been
impossible for us to have an output if there was no teamwork.

11
RECOMMENDATIONS
Erma Mae Y. Sanchez

Officials should do something about the wide traffic in Talamban. It might

be hard but it will surely benefit the people especially those with busy schedules
and are always in a hurry likes employees and students. I also recommend that
cleanliness programs must be improved since there are still garbages that pile in
the sidewalk.

Pedrillo C. Villamor III

I recommend that officials should put CCTV to maintain the peace and
prosperity of our barangay. Another recommendation is to create projects like a
volunteering program to clean the streets of Talamban to make it more beautiful.

Adrian Nellas
I recommend that the barangay officials should expand their help to the
people of the barangay most especially to the poor and to reduce the pollution of
the barangay.

12

Alfonso Jose O. Lamela

After spending my time researching for our LOHP, the barangay still
needs some recommendations and suggestions for it to become a better barangay.
I recommend that Barangay Talamban should tighten its security to reduce theft
and other crimes. The barangay should also maintain and boost the cleanliness of
the barangay by launching some clean-up drives and that the barangay should
conduct surveys for other people to suggest and recommend their wants.

Tristan C. Luague
What I would like to recommend to Barangay Talamban is that the
officials should expand the road so that there will be less traffic.

Rigil Kent A. Enriquez

I recommend that the new barangay captain should implement programs
that will help in the cleanliness and security of the barangay, more security across
the barangay because the Philippines is full of crimes. They should also encourage
people to dispose their garbage properly or to recycle them.

13
INDIVIDUAL LEARNINGS

Erma Mae Y. Sanchez

I learned more about Talamban, from its history to its different economical
activities and the barangay officials and the programs they have implemented for
the residents. Barangay Talamban is a great barangay for it provides all the
residents' needs.

Pedrillo C. Villamor III

I learned the history of barangay Talamban's name and where it came
from and some of the officials in our barangay. Barangay Talamban is more
improved than some barangays in Cebu City.

Adrian Nellas
I learned that it is really important that we have our barangay officials
because they contribute and give us our needs. They give peace, many jobs for
those who need and want them, they keep the barangay's environment clean with
the help of the street cleaners, and many others.

14
Alfonso Jose O. Lamela

After doing this LOHP, I learned a lot of things. One of my learnings is

that Barangay Talamban is a well developed barangay. Barangay Talamban is
capable to sustain the needs of people because the barangay is almost complete in
terms of infrastructures. We have malls, schools and more. I learned that
Barangay Talamban needs more security to ensure the safety of the people living
in the barangay.

Tristan C. Luague
From this project, I learned the different barangay officials and I also
enhanced my social skills which made me confident in dealing with others.

Rigil Kent A. Enriquez

I learned about how Barangay Talamban came to be and about its political
and social backgrounds, its different economic activities, how it gets its funds and
how the barangay spends it. Our barangay is not yet perfect and it needs our help
to improve it.
