LT C743

SHORT DESCRIPTION
The Pulse Amplifier LT C743 (PAMP) can be used in combination with the DCR600 regulator and
the Pulse Conditioning Board GD C742 (PCON) or with the PSR Gate Control Unit GD B021, if the
Pulse Converter Board GF C744 (PCON for PSR) is used.
PAMP can be used without interface board on AC 800PEC control system.
It amplifies the ignition pulses of the optical input to drive two pulse transformers. The secondary
side of these transformers is connected to the gate of power Thyristor.
The board is powered by 48 VDC or 24 VDC. In case of master/slave mode the power will be
forwarded from one board to the next. One board operates as master and up to two boards as
slave in chain configuration. The driver signals for the transformer switch transistor and the power
connection are included in the transferring connector.
A control circuit protects the power stage from overload caused by too long input pulses. The
failure signal is latched and indicated by a red LED. A green LED indicates normal operation (+ 5 V
power supply O.K.).
The failure latch resets during start-up.

2.2

Power supply

Nominal input voltage is 48 VDC. This input is protected against reversed polarity. The board can
also be used with 24 VDC but output gate current will be much lower. This can be suitable for
smaller types of semiconductors like 2" or 3" elements.
A linear voltage regulator generates a stable 5 VDC output for the internal circuitry. In case of
power supply failure LED (+5V OK) is off.

Ignition pulse inputs

There is one optical pulse input.

The optical input uses an AGILENT Receiver of type HFBR2528. It is designed for use with 1mm
POF or 200m HCS cable. Light at the input means active pulse.

2.4

Overload protection

If the ignition pulse exceeds a time of about 500s the output pulse generation is stopped and a
failure latch is set. The failure latch will only be reset with the next power up. Nevertheless the
pulse amplifier will continue normal operation if the pulse input stays low for more than 10s.

2.5

Power stage

The ignition pulses are amplified and shaped to HCMOS level. The signal is fed to the RS485Transceiver either to be send to a slave PAMP or the internal gate drivers. The final amplifier
stages use N-channel power MOSFET transistors, which drive the pulse transformers. Secondary
peak current is 10A for at least 3s (with 48V supply, for 24V see Ch. 5.2). A typical pulse output
is shown in this drawing:
X-scale : 50s/div

Y-scale : 1.5A/div
Note: When using the PAMP board together with GD B021 and GF C744 the typical pulse output
in free wheeling mode is shown below.

Miscellaneous

If one board is used as master board, the MASTER / SLAVE jumper S2 has to be plugged into
MASTER position. On the slave board(s) the MASTER / SLAVE jumper S2 has to be plugged
into SLAVE position.
Instructions for the jumper-settings of the LT C743 CE are available in chapter 7 "ADDITIONAL
INSTRUCTIONS FOR LT C743 CE"

COMMISSIONING AND FUNCTION CONTROL

After power-up the green LED "OK" must light up.

The red LED "ERROR" indicates that at least one input pulse had been limited due to excessive
length. The indication will be stored until power-down.
The optical input pulse can be measured at TP1 (TTL level).
With an additional TEST jumper S1 a constant active MASTER input signal may be simulated.
